you should retry the experiment but put the clones in a dark container for the non aerated version in case the light exposure stunted root growth.

Nice catch! In my own trials and other videos ive seen the transparent jars perform better than opaque ones. So that just makes the aerated performance more impressive!

I was going to say the same. You have too many variables. Light, glass jar vs plastic, different amounts of water, cuttings with different leaf counts etc.

Also the amount of cuttings in the cloner could mean a higher rooting hormone presence in the water.

I enjoy your experiments. I'd like to see you do something where you try and root in carbonated water or maybe a carbonated water feeding vs non carb water feeding and compare growth for a week so as not to run up your costs. Since plants love Co2, they should love some bubbly.

THe plants in the cloner had more water volume and movement. This could have helped to wash off and dilute that rooting stuff you put on them. In the small jars this chemical would have remained stronger and less diluted

I got some pear tree cuttings from a very old pear tree and aeration was the only effective way to root them. I even tried rooting hormone, but it k**led nearly every plant I wanted to root. Sadly, It was so hot this summer that one of my cuttings died. But I'm happy it was alive at my home and had its own roots

The plants in the stagnant water were exposed to light whilst those in the cloner were in the dark. Might not have been the reason for the difference but good science would have had them under equal conditions to make direct comparisons.
@JimmyBHarvests
@JimmyBHarvests 6 ай бұрын
Great point! Best to reduce variables as much as possible. Content I've seen on this exact subject suggests that light will increase rooting speed though - so the cloner plants were actually in the worse conditions and more than overcame them!

A water pump (with venturi) would be quieter. As long as the water surface is agitated, oxygen will mix in. Now im wondering if humidifier/mist would work. Im waiting for my humidifier machine to be delivered soon. In the meanwhile, in gonna try water propagation with very shallow depth, like 1cm, just barely covering the open cut. Perhaps that way the root gets more oxygen. Attaching a water bottle feeder would keep the water depth constant. One question, does the way of cutting the bottom affects root growth? Would larger exposed wound be better? (Ignoring infection)

@Magnus_E

An even better question is how much oxygenated water plants need, in the sense that there might be diminishing returns of oxygenated water say more than 3-4-5 hours per day.

@@JimmyBHarvests Still haven't found any thing, perhaps at some point in the future I'll become obsessed enough to test it myself. So far whenever I go out of home I let the air pump run and tomatoes grow fine (but it's the first time so I do not know if they can do better). The electricity consumption of the pump is very low around 6-7 Watts so I only let it run so sporadically because of the noise.

@@Magnus_E i read somewhere there cant be too much oxygen (by air pump). Its hard to reach toxicity levels. Unless u inject pure oxygen or something. To deal with sounds, dont let the airpump in contact with any hard surface. Cushion it. Then make a box for it

Not to be a downer as I appreciate you sharing your work, but your results may be invalid as light was allowed to hit the root zone of the jar cuttings. It may not make as much of a difference with peppers, but it definitely delays root formation in tomato cuttings. If chloroplasts receive photons they want to photosynthesize and grow, i.e., not put out roots. Darkness and moisture trigger root growth.
