I'll be growing "Grandma Kirksey" in a container. It is an heirloom variety ornamental pepper. It doesn't have an SHU rating. But it is somewhere around cyan peppers in heat. It has striking dark leaves. The peppers start creamy color. Then turn purple for a long time before becoming mature and turning red. The pods are a little bit bitter. So they work better in combinations with other flavors. Food such chili or stew. Rather than as a powder or dried flakes or in a sauce. Also, it helps to keep the plant trimmed back to maintain a nice look. Otherwise, they can get somewhat leggy.

I dry all of my peppers in the dehydrator and then put them through the blender turning them into flakes or a fine powder. I combine all of my peppers, and I blend them together. I have two large jars in the pantry cupboard, and I give the flake and powder away to my friends and family who enjoy the peppers. I grow Cyanne, Scotch bonnet, jalapeno and birds eye chili.

I was given some Vietnamese hot pepper seeds a little over five years ago. They had a high germination percentage, somewhere around 70% to 80%. I have kept them going by bringing them indoors for the winter. I keep them in three and five gallon buckets. This year I harvested over 600 peppers from seven plants. The tallest is 47 inches tall. I don't remember the name but they mature from green to black then red and are quite spicy much more than a cayenne but less than a habanero.

I have been doing a hybrid kratky. I start my plants in 4” containers and then transfer them (just drop them in) to 4” net pots in buckets. The roots grow right through the holes in bottom of the cups. I get much sturdier plants this way; they don’t tip.

I bought seeds for Aji "Mojo" this year, which was billed as tropical, sweet, citrusy, and mildly spicy... I really wanted something I could just eat on its own, since I'm still VERY wimpy when it comes to spice! If my sugar rush peach seeds will germinate (they're a few years old now) I'll grow one of those as well because my brother loves them. Aji Charapita looks amazing, though, and I will think about that!

I do a lot of peppers in AeroGardens and find that cherry peppers do the best and are easy to train to keep them from getting overgrown. I've just started growing shishitos and are amazed at there productivity and vigor. Ditto jalapeno and banana peppers. All peppers seem to do great in hydroponics! Living in central Maine I don't get the growing season or weather for peppers and the like. That's why I'm sold on hydroponics and was happy to hear that MiracleGro decided to keep the AeroGarden brand alive! Love this channel! 😍 Thanks for your always useful advice and entertaining videos. 😊

I have finally succeeded growing some Carolina reapers, in the living room. Planted somewhere in March, now quite a big plant. I'm definitely not born with green hands and I tend to forget/not spend time on plants.....so it almost died a couple of times because I forgot water and I let it grow just like that no pruning. But lo and behold, peppers are coming, 1 is already a good red. Quite curious how hot they will turn out.

If you almost killed it a few times, chances are the pepper will be very hot. The more stressed the plant is, the hotter the peppers.

I've also got some CPI Jigsaw seeds which is not to be confused with the (Gator?) Jigsaw. The CPI Jigsaw is supposed to grow green, purple and white variegated foliage and I think its an annuum variety so it will probably also grow well in a container. I am not planning to plant them soon since I already have like 18 chilis growing on my kitchen table. The table can't be used for other things at the moment. 🤣

Thanks for the hints. I am indeed aiming for smaller sized plants since I am forced to grow indoors exclusively. Sadly I don't have a garden and no balcony either. My hardiness Zone is Zone 8b -9.4°C to -6.7°C but I think it doesn't matter that much since it will be quite warm indoors all the time. What will matter though is my electrical bill for the grow lights. Energy prices are very high here in Germany, but oh well just like with any Hobby it's normal to spend some money I think. Currently I am monitoring my plants in transparent 10cm (4") diameter pots and I am uppotting them to 17cm (6.6") diameter pots when the early flowers are starting to grow (which I will prune).

I don't grow bell peppers for this exact reason. Instead, I prefer to grow mini bell peppers, sometimes called "snack" or "lunchbox" sweet peppers. The plants are prolific producers and the peppers can be used just about anywhere you'd use a bell pepper, with the exception of course being stuffed bell peppers (though I've made sweet variations on "jalapeno poppers" with these with great success). My 2 cents.

Once temps dropped they returned to producing all the way until our first frost last week. They still had flowers when I cut them back and brought them inside. Pretty much any Asian, skyward facing chilies do amazing in containers. Most of the habanero landrace as well. And I still overwinter my frutescens plants. They don’t do amazing, but they’re extremely hardy and can survive a ton of stress. Seems like I haven’t had a lot of luck with Chinense varieties from the Ghost/Naga class unless they’re in containers 5 gallons or more. There are some Red Bhut Jolokia selections that do fine in small containers, though.

I am growing peppers in containers for almost 15yrs now. Most of that was in NJ... Few years ago I moved to TX, expected good results and for most of it - great. However, I encountered one issue nobody could explain to me and I saw some other similar questions that went unanswered: pepper plants and fruit do excellently for a while, no issues. Then, late August, early September as if some switch is hit fruit becomes small, about 1/4 of the expected size. Still ripens well, there are still flowers and production (I just picked up the last for this year, be it small they are still perfectly tasty) but, they shrink. Plants are still perfect, no obvious glaring issues. I still water and feed them regularly ... Any ideas why and how to correct? I am growing them in 15Gal containers. Good soil mix. Varieties I grow are for what we use the most: roasting peppers. All of them behave the same. Examples: Cunbanele, Ajvarski, Bulgarian Cervena, Marconi, ... I even got some Greek pepper seeds for the similar type of peppers... I grow few hot peppers too, for them this issue appears too but by nature of it (mainly eaten raw) not as important as for roasting peppers (I grow Mesilla and Reza hot peppers).

Hi there. Given your extensive experience, my only guess would be that the temperatures are shifting, especially overnight. In Texas, I imagine that the desert-like climate might come with some colder overnights, especially later in the season. Even if the daytime temps are warm, any cooler temps could cause the fruits to stunt and ripen prematurely. The only other thing that comes to mind is keeping up with fertilizing through fruiting, but I'm sure you have a good handle on that. Hope you can figure it out!

Johnny's Seed is a great one if you want F1 Hybrids that are very reliable/disease resistant. For heirlooms and some more quirky peppers, Rareseeds is good, along with SeedsNSuch, Sandia, and Totally Tomato. Hope you find what you're looking for!

Probably pickled peperinchinos (yellow). I grew them in the garden 2 years ago since I've never seen them fresh. They were prolific and ok tasting, much like Shishito that I grew for the first time last year. Shishitos were indeed prolific producers in a 10 gal fabric pot on the porch! Single plant after snipping earlier leaf lettuce at soil level. I'm not thrilled about the blistering peppers method in general. Great just chopped in salads, salsas, sauted, or stuffed and baked like most mild peppers.

@@CODE3p141 at least I was able to limit varieties of carrots, beets and parsnips. So tough NOT trying alternative peppers and tomatos. I do double down on what worked best in prior years to hedge the new for me trial seeds.

I have indoor pepper plants, and the aphids are driving me mad. I spend a good hour every day with washi tape just getting them all off. They're not in a greenhouse situation, but they are still flowering fruit, so I haven't over-wintered them. Should I do all of this anyway just to get rid of the aphids? I've also re-planted them twice with brand new soil after washing off all the roots and treating them with the neem oil and soap. The neem oil and soap have not worked at all. Any recommendations? thank you
@PepperGeek
@PepperGeek 26 күн бұрын
Odd that the neem hasn't worked. There are some neem solutions that are less effective than others. For indoors you really do need to kill them since you won't have natural predators coming in to eat the aphids for you. You could try another insecticidal soap (we have had good results with "Safer" brand). There is also one called Lost Coast which also does well against aphids. Hope you can get it under control!

tried insecticidal soap as well. Dos exactly as videos and's the instructions suggest. Nothing. I'm based in the UK so I haven't seen that brand. I'll try another one from the two or three I've tried so far. 😔 thank you. Will let you know if it doesn't work. Thanks!

I think this would have been more helpful if you put the names of the peppers on the screen, and maybe some container sizes for reference, thanks for the information:)
@PepperGeek

Good point on container size - generally each of these choices will do well in smaller pots, anywhere from 1-5 gallons. But as we mentioned, if you want a larger plant/harvest, you can upsize to 10-20+ gallons!

@Katze822228

All pepper plants love lots of light but you can still grow them on a window sill with just the light from outdoors in spring and summer. They will just grow a bit slower. I grew Thai peppers, Jalapenos and a bell pepper at my north-west facing window and they all had fruits eventually but I wouldn't recommend jalapenos or bell peppers for that because the fruits get so big that they'll take a long time to ripen and they will only have very few fruits. Varieties with small fruits are much better for low light conditions, you'll have ripe peppers earlier and more of them. Really any variety with small fruits works but C. Annuum varieties usually grow a bit faster than the others so i'd recommend those. And also for the first weeks I'd recommend using a household LED lamp for light with around 10cm distance to the seedling so it doesn't stretch too much, preferably with a neutral or cold colour temperature.
