Charles Schultz actually drew the comic strip as a sort of therapy reference from his actual childhood. IIRC he was a painfully shy kid growing up, so poured these feelings into the situations found in Peanuts.

Aw, but hafta remember these are kids, from Scultz' childhood experiences which are relatable and still some other better not sad moments in the specials. The movie was wonderful, and that special I watched in middle school was sad but good... and reall the strips I prefer because you can read Snoopy's speech bubbles, no talking..

I don't remember this special very well and I'm mostly guided by the comic strip but I don't think it's necessarily her being like that to Charlie cause she has a crush on him either. She does have a crush on him but she is usually like that to Marcie or other characters too. She always speaks her mind. She's also very different to Charlie Brown cause he is a procrastinator and usually has a lot of doubts while Patty is very resolutive and likes things to be done in a certain way. She's not very booksmart but she's streetsmarts and practical so she gets angry and annoyed when things are not done her way. But unlike Lucy she doesn't say it to intentionally hurt Charlie Brown, she is just very talkative and sincere and she usually attempts to make him understand or learn how to do those things "right". Or at least what she thinks it's right. She's been shown to have a sensible criteria sometimes but she's also kind of quirky and stubborn in some moments.

I really like Peppermint Patty. She's not malicious, she's just a little bossy and very extrovert while Charlie Brown is really shy and introvert. I'm a little like Charlie Brown but I don't dislike people like Peppermint Patty, they are not real bullies like Lucy or other characters. Like some others have said Peppermint Patty is one of the few characters that actually likes Charlie Brown. Linus is the only guy who respects him (Schroedder is kinda indifferent) and Patty and Marcie are the only girls who like him. Actually I DO like Lucy as a character too, and she can be funny and sympathetic sometimes but in real life it would be the most annoying brat of them all.

If you liked complaining about this you have GOT to watch the movie "Race For Your Life Charlie Brown". Part of that movie basically took this scenario and kicked it up a notch. So at some point the Peanuts are stranded in the wilderness. The boys find a cabin which the girls then find. After rudely inviting herself in Patty then complains about the cereal they having for dinner, despite it clearly being the only thing they have to eat. Then later the girls all but force the guys to sleep outside. Then it starts SNOWING (what time of the year is this anyway). The girls leave the cabin next morning and see the boys buried under snow. And Charlie is DONE! He has had enough! He gets out the cereal and Pattie starts bitching AGAIN about "where are the hotcakes! Where are the bacon and eggs!". And this time Charlie just puts some word under her ass! "No one asked for your opinion! If you don't like it then don't eat it!" Charlie really grows some BALLS in this movie!

The funny thing is in the comic strips Schultz made it a point to sit Franklin with the white characters in any school setting. As out of line as Peppermint Patty was, there's a very understandable reason to her core character: she's insecure about her feelings. As much as she is tough and a tomboy, she's afraid of being embarrassed, thus why she always projects her feeling for Charlie Brown onto him, acts like he's the one who likes her and always when things go wrong finds a way to act like he's the one at fault. Heck, in this case, she had to get Marcie to apologize to him for her because the idea was not only so uncomfortable to her, but because she was so afraid that she'd be rejected if she did it herself too (or felt like it was an attack on her toughness to show that vulnerability too).

OMG , I just notice that watching this year. That is subtle racism. Franklin, the Black kid is set on the opposite side of the table from the White kids. In a crummy sinking deck chair too. Personally, patty has always been my favorite peanuts character. While I understand why some people dont like her, given her occasionally bitchy personality, one thing that really annoys me is the common assumption that she's a lesbian, considering that in the comic strip, both her and marcie have a crush on Charlie Brown. I always just chalked her behavior up to what we in the anime viewing community call being a tsundere.

She really pissed me off in Race For Your Life, Charlie Brown(1977). How is she going barge into the cabin that he and his homeboys found then vote them out of it into the cold world that we know and endure?

That makes tow of us. Pepermint Patty is my favorite Peanuts character despite this but it is still a terrible scene where she was unlikable. "It's Your First Kiss Charlie Brown" also has a scene where Patty was unlikable but much worse.
