I legit can't remember whether I was ever afraid of the Wicked Witch as a little kid. My earliest memories of her are of how cool I thought she was. I loved going around telling people "I'll GET you, my pretty. And your little dog, too!" and doing her dope laugh. Same with Maleficent, Ursula, and the Evil Queen (her pretty form was cool, though the old lady version *was* scary af) from the Disney movies. I feel like I've always admired powerful ladies who love to be bad. Just chewing up scenery left and right, and sometimes much more interesting than the lead characters. Scar, Hades, Shan Yu, and Jafar are also favorites of mine but on the dude side. There's an element to where all of these villains were designed with breaking gender and sexuality stereotypes in mind as a negative, whereas I (and probably a lot of their fans) always found that was what made them interesting and even cool.

For what it's worth, the Game of Thrones skit isn't the slightest bit scary - to kids, it's just Grover playing a goofy game of musical chairs in a medieval castle. In my mind Dave was absolutely no match for her. Not even Mr Hooper stood much of a chance. Who else, then? Big Bird with a hockey stick? Gimme a break. The Count? Yeah I wouldn't exactly trust The Count in this situation. The Ninja Turtles? Spider-Man? Maybe, but I knew there were no signs of them coming. So yeah this villain was too op for the setting.

I like when kids' educational shows bring on scary characters and have them reveal themselves to be actors to the children on the show. Back in the 80s when Reagan-era family values/PSA programming was intensive, slasher movies and their marketing were scaring the hell out of kids, so they had Robert Englund show up in one of the PBS shows and show the kids that he was just an actor and showed them how movie companies did makeup for TV and film. That's an effective way to soothe kids but not hide them from what frightens them.

Maybe if the witch had shown him some decency sooner instead of jumping all over him the moment she was there with him, she would've gotten what was hers a whole lot sooner. 3:49 This is empowering as an adult; seeing a bro talk back to the now coined “Karen” culture.

Once she gave David the only thing that he asked for, the broom was given back to her. God bless you always!!! Holly in east TN (a girl who will forever love the late beautiful precious masterpiece of a gentleman who gave us David)

My Dad is 56 and he told me he was terrified of The Wicked Witch of The West. He told me this as a kid when we would watch The Wizard of Oz and I always thought it was funny because I didn’t find her even remotely scary. 😂 it’s like my younger cousin (16) who laughed at me when I told him that I was scared of Chucky as a kid.

Sesame Street is such a safe setting and show for little kids to get lost into, I imagine the very idea of such a scary character existing there must have felt wrong.

As a kid in the 70’s I grew up watching Sesame Street, this episode would have confused me. It’s not scary it’s just very odd.

I was terrified as a kid by ........Land of the Lost. The dinosaur at the beginning turns to the camera and tries to eat you, at the start of EVERY episode.

I actually saw that episode when it aired. Even then I didn't like it. I was calling the characters on the show Novembers. I never liked him again after seeing this. And I wish Big Bird (Turd) went up in the Space Shuttle.

Just because they got the actress does not mean they got the IP rights to wizard of oz. That's probably why it really got banned.

As a kid I never had a problem with the flying monkeys, but The Wicked Witch of The West scared the hell out of me. After watching the Wizard of Oz at night I would go to bed with the covers pulled over my head literally hiding from her. The green skin, menacing presence and her voice made her truly terrifying. Even now as an adult I can appreciate why I found her so scary when I was a kid. Marget Hamiliton gave a timeless performance and in my mind, she is still the definitive on-screen witch. I totally understand why Sesame Street producers banned this episode. Even Marget knew the effect her iconic character had on children. She made a guest appearance on an episode of Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood and did her best to show kids she was a nice lady, and the witch was simply make-believe.

Too be fair 70s sesame street has a-lot werid creepy skits, I remember one time when I was 14 I rented a collection of old school Sesame Street episodes form the 70s(you know like most 14 year olds) and two creeped by (or at least unsettled by )one were the Giant mutant rabbit chases kids, and the other "the Daddy Dear " song. Strange though of all the creepy moments of sesame this was the one

I can see how it could of been scary with the teleporting sound effect and the music and her laughing but other than that nothing really scary
