Peppernuts are a cookie you either know about and love or you've never heard of. For me, these are full of family tradition and nostalgia! They're flavored with anise oil, but don’t roll your eyes and think "black licorice." Instead, think of them as a perfect thing to make as a family and enjoy with coffee!

------------------------------
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup lard, (or vegetable shortening)
- 1 cup molasses
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/4 tsp real anise oil
- 1/2 cup sour milk, (1 tbsp vinegar with 1/2 cup milk)
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 6 cups flour
INSTRUCTIONS
In the bowl of a stand mixer, mix the lard and molasses, 30 seconds. Add the sugar, egg, anise oil, sour milk, and mix well, 1 minute. Add baking soda and flour and mix until only a few streaks of flour remain, 1 minute.
Shape into cylindrical rolls approximately 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch in diameter. Chill overnight and cut into 1/4-inch pieces.
Preheat oven to 350°F. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool on pan for 5 minutes. Using a spatula, scrape the peppernuts into an airtight container. Store for up to three months in the freezer.

Thanks for the recipe! My Grandma A made these every year. The last few years she was alive, she said she was ‘cheating’. Instead of rolling and slicing off tiny cookies, she’d press the dough into a cookie sheet, chill, then run a knife through the dough making tiny squares. They were still yummy!

My grandma made these as well. And yip, gallons and gallons of Peppernuts around during the Holidays! Thank you for making my heart smile with warm memories from my childhood.

Oh, man! MEMORIES! I made these with my grandma as well. She had a nifty "peppernut gun" that made it really easy to make them. Luckily, the gun was passed down to me. They're SO GOOD when they first come out...firm with a soft inside.

Made these last year loved them...decided to make them again and I'm always looking for efficient ways to save time and have consistency. One push of this Tupperware gadget snack press or gnocchi maker attached the smallest cylinder attachment six in one push made the process so easy

If I am ever in a bad mood, all I have to do is watch one of your videos. You are such a joy, and it's great when mom is on too. I loved the heartfelt merry Christmas to each other at the end. My grandmother was from Germany and made a molasses cookie for Christmas, but it was very different-- no anise, and had dates in it. They were incredible.

Well, Kaleb. Can I just say that your Christmas baking videos have brought me so much joy. I actually baked quite a few of your recipes and had great luck with them all. My Pfeffernusse always have some pepper in them so I'm going to try to combine my recipe with yours. Merry Christmas, Kaleb. Thanks for all the fun.

I used to make them and another version when my kids were little because I thought it would be fun for them to help roll the dough and cut the discs but they were not much into the making part and I was left alone to do most of it. They were just into the eating part.

What a nice tradition to carry on! And fyi, I just found out last night that you can adjust (lower) your beaters so that there's nothing left unmixed at the bottom of the bowl. There's even a youtube video of it!

My office did volunteer work one year at a home for mentally lesser abled people. I baked these cookies with them. Ok we didn't freeze and cut them instead we rolled little balls. But it was a big hit. It would be a nice activity with kids or the elderly as well. Pre make the dough and just give them a piece and some baking paper with their name on it. Its basically eatable play dough. And they made all kinds of shapes with them. I baked them and they took their art works home to eat later. It was really nice. I remember my hands smelling like the dough for hours afterwards. 🤣

We love them as well in the Netherlands. They are a major part of our santa tradition. They get thrown at kids by santa's helpers actually. Its really fun. These cookies are basically my childhood in cookie form. 😍 So sad the actor that used to play santa died this month. Its 2020 of course santa dies this year. 😤

I was told that the sour milk was so there was an acid to activate the baking soda. Usually if a recipe doesn’t have vanilla it will have sour milk for that reason.
