Peranakan is a race of people who are the descendant of the first settlements of Chinese people that came to Malaya and married the local people.
The Peranakan community in Malaysia is very well-known in Malacca and Penang (Baba Nyonya). But on this vlog, we explore how the Peranakan people in Terengganu lives.
From Peranakan house, clothing (kebaya Nyonya), food (laksa Terengganu, pulut durian, and nyonya kuih)...everything was fascinating especially for Ivana who is a Peranakan herself.
Special thanks to Tourism Terengganu www.beautifulterengganu.com

That door lock system reminds me of boat making in pulau duyong terengganu..they are makers of ancient boats without using nails..malay archipelagos (these includes indonesia/phillipines/singapore/brunei and of course Malaysia) were seafarers..therefore boat making is also part of its arts..

If in Malacca they are known as 'Baba & Nyonya', in Terengganu we call them as 'Awang & Mek'. When I was a kid, I loved to listen to them talking in Malay Language because they use Terengganu dialect but with a certain distinctive conversation sway or curve... 😍 By the way are you coming back to Toronto anytime soon? Izzudin ,makcik don't think they are mixed between Malay & Chinese race ,because MalayMuslims were prohibited to marry non muslims ,how can those malays be murtad peoples??? ,Maybe they mixed race between Siam or asli peoples or indians ,i can't accept the idea that kuno Malays can easily gaveup their religion for some nafsu & syahwat in Sex!!! And those peranakan living in malays communities then they adopted some of easy & simple malay's culture to be their culture too.

@@Fallen_Angel17 in the old days the malays also embrace hinduism and buddhism. Even before islam came to the malay archipelago(nusantara)the Malays were Hindus and then after that the Malays were Buddhist and when islam came after that most of the Malays convert to islam by stages. There are 2 kinds of Laksa Terengganu ; Laksa Kuah Merah/Kuah Masak ( coconut milk cooked with shredded toasted fish and secret spices which gives rise to the name Kuah merah/red gravy ). Then there is Laksa Kuah Putih ( coconut milk with shredded toasted fish and ground black pepper, uncooked which keeps the white color of the coconut milk, thus Kuah Putih. Both are eaten with fresh ulam. Terengganu laksa is the best.Ofc Im partial haha I grew up in the part of town ( very close to China Town ) with many Chinese neighbors. In the morning we would be waiting for this one Chinese lady who came around selling yummy nyonya kuehs in her wide round basket. Some good old memories.. And then there was another nyonya who owned a Keropok and Rojak place in China town.We would go running there with whatever little money we had in our pockets. To us she was Mok Mek Ceranang but later on I think they renamed her place Madam Bee. Jet Lag Warriors you are making me miss my childhood days, in a good way. Thank You 😍

Hi Ivana, go to melaka one day. There is a row of shops along Christ Church Melaka selling these nyonya kebaya. You can get a really nice set for around rm150-200 (all sorts of colours available). But do survey a few shops and haggle before buying.

@@JetLagWarriors yea. One can easily get overwhelmed. I spent many hours in the shop as well 😂 Good thing the lady boss was helpful and recommended the ones that suit my skin color and allowed me to try it on as well. You should seriously consider buying one since it's part of your culture. You wont find this in any part of the world. Steve will pay for it 😜

Peranakan women are highly skilled in cooking and they learn from very young age, every family have their own secret recipes even though it could be a common dish like rendang or choong peah...basic ingredients are almost the same but mmmm...maybe the measurement which in Malaysian, we called that 'agak agak' which can also mean estimation by the look , taste and feel of the hand...haha! There is an interesting story about marrying a Peranakan woman. In the old days, marriage were arranged by match-making. The family of the man will go to the woman's family to propose. They were not allow to see the woman that gonna be matchmade, but the woman stayed in the kitchen to pound sambal belachan. By listening to the rhythm of the pounding of the sambal on the stone motar. the parents of the man's side will know whether she is a good cook or not. haha! Interesting story...but could be just a story!!!

The Pulut Durian u mentioned, to me it was Pengat Durian. U cook the durian in santan, gula melaka & few other ingredients. Besides of durian, u can also use banana, nangka, tapioca, sweet potato, rhinoceros potato & ubi gadong. But i've never seen Pengat Ubi Keling, it was kinda wierd since almost ubi could be use in pengat.

Pulut Durian = we eat durian with pulut, boiled coconut milk + water & sugar. Pengat Durian/nangka/pisang/ubi = we cook durian/nangka/pisang/ubi in santan + water + gula melaka. That why in pulut durian, the gravy is white. While in pengat, the gravy is brown.
