PERCH FISHING ON CANALS - GOING IN BLIND

We go perch fishing on canals with lures, because flood water has hit the UK and the rivers are in a mess. Of course floodwater does affect the canal too, however, stretching my legs to discover new water gives me more options when we are hit by these consistently heavy rainfalls. I'M GOING IN BLIND, so take the opportunity to demonstrate my complete approach right from deciding to try the canal through to locating some nice perch.

Nick another absolutely brilliant vlog, and displayed perfect the importance of doing as much homework as you can and also perseverance. Which as I know you know, on the cut in winter is a must. We learn as much if we choose to from blanks as we do from hauling, as I always find on sessions with less action I'm always working the contours better to get that bite which means you build up a mental topography of the venue and find all the snags too. Hope you have a great week and Best wishes and stay safe and well to you and your family buddy, and tight lines 🎣

Very good video , showing the work that goes in to finding and catching fish . I've found -if the fishery rules permit - to bait fish with maggot to find perch - then I'll return with lure /spinners - ditto trout . Bait apron , loose feed maggots and stay mobile . I've fished one swim for years for roach/rudd/bream -never caught a perch , tried feeder fishing with dried blood in the mix to hopefully get tench , no tench , perch a chuck on maggot hook bait -never caught perch there since on bait/lure/dropshot . Trout area doddle on bait , but then there are days when fly out fishes bait because they are "on" -I think it could be same with perch because I catch perch on "euro nymphing" - so what ? - dunno - that's fishing innit . Good vid , liked and subbed . Keep em coming .

Another excellent vid mate. Some good fish too. The canal by me used to get heavily fished by match anglers, in fact, it used to be a Division 2 stretch, upto 200 anglers. This is going back to the 80's. Me and my friend would go down either straight after they left or the next day. Always had perch on freelined worm. Caught my biggest, which to my shame, still haven't beat, 3lb 4oz. Cheers 👍

I do a lot of lure fishing on canals here in the South Midlands. Strange beast, a canal! No flow little depth. A feature can be as little as a clump of grass, a self seeded tree or even an old sunken shopping trolley! and then, when you have finally found them, they can be gone two days later! A guy fishing next to me last week snagged an old polytrhene bag. when he pulled it in there was a perch hiding in it! Catching on canals can be tough! But then I do bag up every now and again!

@@Lifeonthebank. Hi, Yes I do, mostly on the Warwickshire Avon and I can't say that I have noticed any major difference in their behaviour. They seem to be a little harder to find at first in the winter on canals. Maybe they roam farther because the canals are so uniform or maybe the lack of depth means that they are effected by the colder temperatures more. However once you find a good stretch, it does seem to remain a good stretch, if you know what I mean?!

I've got to say, this was one the most inspiring videos we've watched. For a couple of weeks or so we've been struggling to get any perch. It does become frustrating when some on the channels catch one after another. When the experts struggle also, it reassures us that we're not just hopeless. The going smaller is a route I prefer personally, but many of the other u-tubers have been saying go the other way. Great information, great video. Thank you. 😉
@Lifeonthebank
@Lifeonthebank 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. I think it’s important to reassure others that it can be tough. Also, too many create a channel to promote themselves and their angling ability. I want to try and bring more value than that. Ideally people will take something away from it, every time. Even if it’s just something small. Thanks for your support. It means a lot. 🙏🙏🙏👍

Brilliant bit of work sir, all the research pays off, sometimes, but as you say time on the bank counts for a lot but, how would you find out in the first place if a particular stretch water holds perch ?? I am just sort of staring, although I have been fishing for many many years now, I have not fished for a while now, and back in the day perch were almost I think on the verge of disappearing completely ? They just seemed to vanish, not sure if there was some sort of disease in the species ? Again great video and useful information and ideas. Many thanks for sharing 👍 Les.

Hi Nick, at my local canal there’s lots of jack pike around the 2/3lb mark so I’m having to use a light wire trace - I’m currently using the fox rage sure fit but I’m not confident that this isn’t putting the perch off. Are there any other options you can recommend? As I’m using 0.09mm braid mainline so seems like it’s a bit counter productive with the trace. Is there anything you can recommend that’s going to keep my finesse approach and not put off the perch or do you think I could get away with fluorocarbon with the jacks being so small? Thanks and keep up the great videos. Fantastic.
@Lifeonthebank
@Lifeonthebank 3 жыл бұрын
If there’s a lot of pike (big or small) then you must use a trace. Sounds like you’ve gone for a decent one with thin wire. Try fishing slower, along the bottom. Long pauses. I tend to catch more pike when I’m fishing a bit faster and up in the water. There’s also the benefit of the trace being less visible when it’s laying flat on the bottom. So maybe try that. Slow with less blatant lures. 👍

My only similar experience is the reservoirs where you’d step everything up. A stiffer rod and heavier weight to get down in the water. At this time of year I’d be fishing right on the deck, slow, neds or creators bumped slowly. You might need 10g jigheads to get down in the deep water whilst still being able to feel what you’re doing. I hope that helps!

Do you always fish the reggies and squirmz along the bottom or will they catch threw the water too? Can't seem to catch twitching them across the bottom. Can the gonks be fished threw the water like a shad? Letting it drop and re retrieving? Thanks for taking time to answer too.
@Lifeonthebank
@Lifeonthebank 2 жыл бұрын
REGGIEZ and Squirmz are best on the bottom but Gonks and Squirlyz can also be fished up in the water. Yes, try fishing the Gonks like Shads. 👍👍👍

Try scaling down, try dropshotting, try different features and places where the light changes in the water, ie where a bridge casts shade, try fishing along the light side. Sometimes perch sit in the darker areas and strike into the light

I’m kind of struggling knowing what size hook I should use with my lures. Can anyone help?
@Lifeonthebank
@Lifeonthebank 3 жыл бұрын
It does generally depend on the size of your lures. To give you an idea. 2.5’ Nimble I use about a size 4. 5cm Squirmz I would use a size 1. Reggiez on Cheb I would use a size 2/0 EWG hook. I hope that helps. 👍

It’s all well an good checking Google maps for stretches, but it doesn’t differentiate between sections that can be fished with the wanderers permit (needed to fish canals) and the club owned sections…. but this is never mentioned and you talk about fishing miles..? Well dodgy, need to check the rules fella. You can’t just fish without the permits.
@Lifeonthebank
@Lifeonthebank 2 жыл бұрын
I pitch Google maps as a starting point. Then you’ll need to do your homework in terms of permits needed. Trust me, I have dozens of permits … more than I’ve ever owed.
