Nice one Nick. Nice Perch too. I have to wait about another month to get on the canals here because they're crystal clear and weedy as hell. At the moment you can see there's no fish - never figured out where they go to hide......short sections between locks so they've got nowhere to go??? Unfortunately - they've put a proper cycle path all the way from the River Shannon to Dublin and called it a "Greenway". As part of this they have cut a 45degree slope into the water on the towpath side - so that's half of the fishes environment gone the entire way along the canal. I used to pick up loads of big Perch on the towpath side under Lillies....not any more. And there's a million people where there used to be no one except me........very disappointing to say the least.

A good tip for fishing with micro lures, especially creature baits is to let them just sit there after casting out and after every twitch. Quite often perch and pike aswell will sit and watch the bait for a while before taking it especially when the weather gets colder and they are less active. Recently i've had alot of good perch using this method including a 3lber which i didn't even feel the take from it was only after letting it sit for a good 10-15 seconds that i went to twitch it and set the hook without knowing a fish had taken the lure. Good luck!

@@lukehogg2438 I’m going to try this thanks, I’m new to lures and I find it’s either all chub or all perch , any idea why.
@lukehogg24384 жыл бұрын
@@lesbaty8919 It comes down to the type of lures you are wanting to use. Micro lures were designed for targeting species such as perch, chub, zander, small pike etc. You can catch big fish on small baits but typically if you were aiming to catch a 20lb pike you wouldn't reach for your micro lure setup as your main approach. Thats all it is really.

I've had this week off work and had 4 sessions on the Leeds and Liverpool canal, with each session being between 2 to 4 hours long. I haven't caught a single perch and managed 1 jack pike. I fished 3 different stretches of the canal, trying all the features I could. Boats, bridges, over- hanging trees, nearside bank and far bank and nothing. Are our waters that poorly stocked these days? ( I feel like I was fishing well and fishing hard). I can't help but think that 20 to 30 years ago I'd have been pulling them out for fun! There were often spots I found where I thought "this looks well fishy" for instance a little inlet full of Lillie's with overhanging trees and still nothing. I fished small lures, jig heads and Ned rigs. The canal was well weeded and full of leaf litter due to the time if year and more often than not I ended up dragging a lot of stuff in but I still can't say that completely ruined my chances alone.
@Lifeonthebank3 жыл бұрын
Tbh, I’ve found October really tough this year. Do you know of any decent perch coming out to anyone in your area? They find me! Last week i had two 12 in and some 4-5 in. Drop shot does it for me, with a lure that it is for the sea fishing, but kils it for perch. The transparent lures with cooper and black colour flakes, gives the best results for me. The dark green does it for the pikes. I am sure that on every water, you can find something that works much better than what what i use, and what i use can work very good on my body of water but less on yours.

Really enjoyed that mate thank you. That’s exactly how I go about finding sea trout and bass it’s basically rod hours and your experience. I’ve started pike and Perch fishing in Cheshire but finding most of the waters near me are pretty coloured very poor clarity. I just wondered what your thoughts are for fishing muddy water. Cheers and thanks for informative content 😎
@Lifeonthebank4 жыл бұрын
Poor water quality isn’t great for lure fishing. We’re getting more and more flood water in the UK. It’s really making the fishing tricky. I would obviously play around with the colours of your lure. I don’t tend to use really loud colours much but will try white or black in coloured water. Also had a few on crankbaits, to add noise / a rattle into the mix. Finally I know anglers that play around with scent, placing a scent into the cavity on their lures. Coloured water isn’t ideal but it’s something that hard to avoid! Thanks for checking out the channel 👍👍👍

Great video once again Nick. Must be quite a job to put together (presumably on your own). I tried a soft bait for the very first time recently whilst about to pack up on a feeder rod and thought 'sod it, I'll give it a go'. Struck into something heavy in the margins...my heart was racing, could it be a massive perch that I've read and watched so much of this year...the fight carried on and my thoughts slowly turned to a pike...will it bite through the line?! After about 15 minutes, it surfaced...is that a...? No!? 21lb carp. Foul hooked. Couldnt believe it. I go with my 1-7g Daiwa Ninja rod for the first time on Saturday to a local river. Would make my absolute year to get even a 2lb perch. Tight lines.

Definitely don’t write it off after just one session. Maybe try a different time of day or different lures next time. If the water was coloured maybe try it when conditions have changed. Hi Nick I’m sure you had the occasional deep hooked perch, like I have. In most situations I can get the hook and lure out from the perch’s mouth. It is distressing for the fish and in very minimal circumstances fatal, and that is distressing for the angler. Do you have any recommendations for a hook cutter that’s suitable for cutting the hook so that it can be more successfully withdrawn. I expect limitations exist because of the access through the perch’s mouth, but they do have a slightly more cavernous mouth. Any thoughts or ideas really appreciated. Dave
@Lifeonthebank4 жыл бұрын
I’ve not yet had to use my cutters but do always carry some. They are just standard wire cutters you’d find in a diy store. I always have long nose pliers and forcepts too. Finally a good old fashioned discorger, in case you catch a small perch where you can’t fit much at all in its mouth. Good question. Fish care should always be paramount 😉👍
@daverichards65574 жыл бұрын
@@Lifeonthebank Thanks Nick for answering, I’ve taken your advice and ordered a standard side cutters (140mm length handles, the opening of the jaw I can see should allow access to the perch’s mouth and throat areas) it’s great advice together with the disgorger, which as a club angler we are made to carry naturally. Im an international student in Bangor, North Wales. I really have no idea about fishing here in the UK . Is it allowed to go out and fishing in public (catch and release)? Do I need a permission?

Nice video but disappointing to see yet another angler advocating retaining perch in a landing net. This is illegal. Just return it. If you don't catch another because it spooks the fish, so what?
@Lifeonthebank4 жыл бұрын
I always rest a fish in the net after a fight. Particularly important with pike and barbel. Last thing it wants is to be pulled straight out the water for a photos etc. That’s all that is happening here really.
@daniellaw89994 жыл бұрын
@@Lifeonthebank be honest, this is you hoping to catch another before you release the first fish for a more impressive catch shot. The fish can't even right itself in the net as it's not deep enough.

The fish is resting in the net regardless of whether I’m casting for another or not. After a couple of snaps it was released and swam off nice and strong.

Keep net is for keeping fish in like it or not Landing net is for landing fish. Once you start fishing again you are keeping your fish in a landing net which is illegal You know it's not right so don't fu@@ing do it.
