Thanks for posting this. James is one of the best books I've read this year. Pulitzer material. ETA: I've read most of Everett's books and they all have been at the top of my favorites.

What a fascinating interview! Thank you for posting this. I love hearing about his writing process, particularly how many times he re-read Huckleberry Finn. Another interesting idea (among countless others) starts at 32:07, where he talks about how the character Jim, controls his anger and Percivel Everett’s experience as a horse trainer and how he used anger to control a misbehaving animal (mule, in the case). At 34:00, Perceval had a very interesting answer to Calab’s question. I love that part. As a working artist myself, visual in my case, these are things I’ve thought about a great deal. It’s wonderful to hear about the creative process from artists using other art forms that gives other artists another doorway in, so to speak, to new approaches to our own work.
