When I was young, during camp, we were left to wonder through a water citadel like city (Dubrovnik like, not sure if it was precisely that though?) in Croatia. I was with a friend. We wondered through the lit streets until we ran into some of our tutors who were having some wine in a tavern - it was literally a tavern in stone, half under the ground, with men singing in Croatian, accompanying themselves with guitars. They were just buddies singing, not interprets hired by the tavern or smth. It was magical. Our tutors were having red wine in shot-like glasses, with local made cheese and bread. The air smelled like the sea and the light was coming mostly from candles. That memory has stayed with me to this day - and hearing this song brings back some of the magic of that night.

This song is on Central-čakavian ikavian dialect of Čakavian language which is spoken in areas around the city of Rijeka known as Kvarner region. Where I live people speak Northernčakavian ekavian dialect, but I also understand Central-čakavian. Here are the lyrics with translation to English: Oj divojko, jabuko rumena (Oi girl, ruddy as an apple) Parih da te ma naranča rodila (I reckon that orange gave birth to you) Nije mene naranča rodila (The orange didn't gave birth to me) Za goru me mat moja rodila (I was born for the hills by my mother) Bura mi je ziparinka bila (Northern wind was my cradle) Zipjuć me je va more stavjala (She cradled me into the sea) Mornari me va mrižu lovili (Sailors caught me in a net) Prodali me biloj Katarini (They sold me to the white Catherine) Katarina dobra žena bila (Catherine was a good woman) Ka je mene mabilu odgojila (Who raised me lovably) Z bilim kruhom i crljenim vinom (With white bread and red wine) 🇭🇷 Ⱂⱁⰸⰴⱃⰰⰲ ⰻⰸ Ⱈⱃⰲⰰⱅⱄⰽⰵ 🇭🇷
@jozokrstanovic904010 ай бұрын
great translation, Just 2 things important for context Za goru me mat moja rodila should be translated as "Behind the hill" as it alludes to her being born in secrecy, probably out of wedlock or some similar case. And Zipjuc me je va more stavljala has the correct translation, but it would be "He cradled me into the sea" as 'Bura' is a feminine noun in the Croatian language, but wind is a masculine one in English. The whole song itself is about a beautiful red/orange haired lady who was an orphan that got found by sailors in the sea after which they promptly gave her to Katarina (presumably Kotromanic) who then proceeded to raise the girl.
@jozokrstanovic904010 ай бұрын
Also there are a few more possible meanings in the song. Women with red/orange hair were associated with bad omens/witchcraft in older days which could be a reason for her abandonment. This also could be referenced in the verse "kad je mene ma vilu odgojila" (Since she raised me, a fae) Alluding to the fact that Katarina was a good woman since she accepted and raised her instead of shunning her like her mother even though there are bad myths linked to her hair colour. And "s bilim kruhom i crljenim vinom" (with white bread and red wine) could point to the fact that Katarina Kosaca spent the late period of her life and until her death in a female only catholic temple. As white bread and red wine is heavily linked to the Catholic Eucharist

@@ALTAI38 ALTAI TURK You have to take in consideration that Naranča is not a traditional Folk song. The traditional Folk song is called "Lipa Divojka" - meaning Beautiful Girl. Now, there are multiple videos where this song is performed by Traditional Klapa artists. It sounds completely different to Naranča. The harmony, the rythm and even the words are different to Naranča. Meaning that Elvis took that Folk song and changed the lyrics, made up his own melody and harmony making him the rightful owner of the song. The song was specifically made for a Croatian band Putokazi. Now, the song wouldn't have been taken down if the creators of Witcher CD Projekt requested permission to use his song in their game. Not only did they use it without his permission but they completely changed the name of his song to Widow-maker. As you may know, that means that CD Projekt violated the author's (Elvis) rights and Elvis has rightful authority to remove the song. To make matters worse, Elvis, who is a very respected musician reached out to CD Projekt and asked them to credit his work to him and the band Putokazi but CD Projekt completely ignored his requests. Actually, his lawyers tried to reach out to them multiple times but they still kept ignoring him. Making Elvis seek legal action and take down the song. Elvis himself is very thankful to Witcher community and is happy his song got recognition to a more international level. I am very sorry that the song has been taken down as I am a big fan of Witcher but CD Projekt has made a very unprofessional and a silly mistake.

You have a mistake in the lyrics, in your description: It's "Zib(l)juć' me je va morje stav(l)jala" (She was rocking me while putting me in the sea". Not "zipju špreje"...

I think it's a variant of Kolovrat. It is an old Slavic symbol that represents the circle of life and death.

Do Russians, Ukranians, Polish and other Slavs understand this song? Is the Slavic language the same in all of these countries?
@nikolasubiczr21964 жыл бұрын
Well, yes and no. The thing is that Slavic languages are split into 3 strong language groups: East (Russian, Ukrainian, Belorussian), West (Polish, Slovak and Czech) and South (Slovenian, Serbian, Croatian and Bulgarian). South Slavs have no hard time understanding each other, as well as West or East Slavs within their language groups. However, South Slavs might find difficult to understand West Slavs, but easier to understand East Slavs, and vice versa. Example given: We Croats will very well understand 80% of Serbian, about 45% Russian, but only 30% of Polish, even though Polish language is closer to us. It is also important to note that once in history, this language group was one Common Slavic language, but due to Slavic expansion/migration to the rest of the South and Middle Europe, the tribes formed their own way of understanding as there was no, or little linkage to other Slavic countries, unlike English or Spanish who formed colonies. Fun fact: The term "Slavs", which is used as an ethnic group/affiliation in which we all belong to, is derived from an old Slavic word "Slava/Cла́ва", and is common word even today in all Slavic languages, and it means "Glory or Glorious". So yeah, we are far more interesting than those Spaniards or Yankees :D
@jozokrstanovic90402 жыл бұрын
@@nikolasubiczr2196 Just a minor thing, Most popular theory around the origin of the word slav is that it comes from the word slovo (letter) and it symbolizes how different slavic people could "sloviti" between eachother (sloviti = talk).
