The spear is historically one of the symbols of ares, that I believe is why the traditional male symbol, the symbol of Mars (Roman ares), is shaped like a shield and spear

Yeah, so for those who dont know, those 3 old ladies who cut the blue yarn, the Fates, have an important role in Greek mythology. The thread they weave are the life threads of every living thing. One fate, Clotho, the one on the right, spins the thread. The one on the left, Lachesis, measures the thread. And the one in the center, Atropos, cuts the thread at that measured length, setting the lifespan of the person whose thread it is. Its often incorrectly shown in TV that them cutting the string means the person instantly dies, but thats not the case, and I love that Percy Jackson doesn't fall into that incorrect trope, because its honestly way cooler that they're setting the lifespan rather than outright ending it

Did I just hear someone say Percy has been carrying more than Annabeth? Are we watching the same show lol? Annabeth saved them on the bus with the furies, it's her plan that saved them from Medusa, she took on the Chimera on the train so that Percy and Grover could get a head start and she was gonna fight the Chimera by herself to protect Percy and Grover if Percy hadn't tricked her and locked the door. How exactly had Percy been carrying more than her? And this isn't a dig at Percy, he did fight the minotaur and the Aries kids, and eventually Percy will carry more than anyone else in the entire series. Percy is 100% the fighter in their group, and Annabeth is the brains (same as she is in the book), but she's also one of the best fighters and at this point in the show Percy is absolutely right, Annabeth has more experience and training than him to complete the quest. I'm fascinated that I actually heard someone say that Percy is carrying more than Annabeth at this point in the show in terms of fighting. Again, all respect, but what show is guy in the blue watching lol.

Thank you for your comment. I said what I said because I have been the most impressed by Percy's actions throughout the show so far. I think his actor has given his character the biggest glow up compared to the books (Aside from Percy hitting the floss dance). I've been impressed by the leadership and accountability he has taken for the quest. I do think the show has fast paced Percy's development which has lead me to think Percy is hard carrying compared to the book. If I'm judging off the book then Percy is not hard carrying. All three of the main characters are terrific and Annabeth's wit is great. All three characters contribute to the success and Annabeth's strategy across each episode and her fighting in episode 2 are good. I've read the books many a time and I've been so looking forward to the show and each episode that comes out each week. This episode has been by far my favourite so far I think and it's wild because I believe it's the episode that has most strayed from the book thus far. I think readers need to keep in mind that 1. This is a Disney show and anything that isn't Marvel they often do simplify their fight scenes. As much as I want to see an epic fight early on, it may be something we get in later seasons as time goes on and the show gets more feedback. 2. The Lightning Thief book was published in 2005, written in the late 90s. Rick has learned so much more since writing that first book and he knows his series and his universe from the back of his hand. It's only natural that he may want to make changes to a book that is nearly 20 years old, adapting it and making changes that he likes that may better develop characters and plots within the story that will tie in most definitely later down the line. I have seen a lot of faithful book readers get very upset that certain things are being left out of the show that honestly? Aren't as important as you say it is. Ngl, and this is coming from someone who is A PART of this fandom and has been for over a decade, but people could be upset that the most miniscule thing wasn't added. Can't impress everyone, and not every adaptation is a carbon copy of their book material, and that's a good thing- otherwise we get stuff like the Mortal Instruments movie which I swear nearly every single dialogue line feels like it is directly ripped from the book and it is so uninspiring (I know we have certain dialogue lines shown in this series, but I feel it's added more tastefully). Anyways so sorry for this long rant but I'm really enjoying the reactions from you guys!

I just think it's super disappointing to see that we're finally getting an adaptation of this amazing series that does show service to the books for the most part and has so much love poured into it and people are being this picky over it. You can clearly see it's so much more faithful than the movies... It's like.. if you wanted a completely book accurate experience... Read the books

However, I do think that Percy would not be able to complete this quest though without Annabeth as he doesn’t have her experience.

Love this episode. There were a lot of changes from the book but I have become forgiving of it because they always manage to pull it off. Love the development with the trio too. Their acting blew me off. For a child actors/actress, I think they are really good. Since you guys love the camp, hope next season we'll get more Camp Halfblood. Also, Annabeth being fascinated by contraptions and stuff is because she's an architecture nerd.

well also, Rick said before the show even released that they're changing things to make the story better, flow better, and set up arcs and plots and dynamics early on, and add stuff he wished he had added in the book. So that was something that we should've expected because he told us they'd be that way

This is my favorite so far 💙 It's really interesting that we saw Hephaestus this episode cause we don't meet him in the 1st book. And the scene at waterland is completely different. In the book, Grover goes with them and the shield is at the bottom of a pool surrounded by cupid statues and mechanical spiders. I actually like this version better as we see Percy and Annabeth bond. I hope we actually "take a Zebra to Vegas" next episode. Can't wait to see the Lotus Casino!

So they haven’t said it in the show yet and I’m not sure if it will end up being something they use in the show but in the books the gods aren’t allowed to take other gods like power token thing, it’s one of their laws that they actually follow. So like when Grover says he knows who stole the bolt I believe he’s looking at it the way it’s presented in the book which is that Hades had someone steal the bolt for him so it couldn’t be a god that stole it and that’s also why when Grover is talking to Ares he says something about someone stealing it but not a god

I think how they’re gonna explain it is that Grover helped ares realize who all the demigods he saw at Olympus was and the two that he didn’t see obviously was Percy cuz he didn’t know he was a demigod yet and then (spoiler) was the other person he didn’t see if you read the book you know the spoiler

For me it always comes down to an adaptation cant always be word for word like the book. If it was i would think why would i need the book i can just watch the show. This show does so many amazing things while not missing important plot and story beats. Changes arent bad and the heart of the story seems there. Ricks at the helm we can see that in a lot of things. But he also is a co writer working with someone else too we have to be aware of that. I love the books and I think that if you love the books more that medium is still there to go back to. I'm just happy eyes are on this story and it's getting positive reviews from new and old fans.

I have a theory from this episode that maybe Grover is the one who stole the lightning bolt. It might be a long shot because I saw the movies and I know who the obvious answer is but if the show wants to subvert expectations and have a surprise villain. Grover might be the ideal candidate. I think he’s purposefully trying to make people believe that he’s more childlike than others. Trying to get them to underestimate him. I think he’s more clever than he wants people to believe. I’m not sure if this is the case but if I’m right then that’s amazing.

Making it be Grover makes no sense and it would change the whole plot of the entire series, because the whole thing relies on who the lighting thief is... Like the whole motivation to stealing it, why and how and the consequences of it relies on who it is... Specially because Grover is a satyr and not a you-know-what it wouldn't make sense even more, why would he do that lol

I’m just trying to think if it’s not the obvious answer then what could the answer be? We know Disney is not above radically changing plot to increase shock value. Maybe I’m not giving Disney enough faith with this series to not have a surprise villain. My thought goes back to when Percy was told that he will be betrayed by someone he trusts. He thinks he avoided it by choosing Grover over Luke. Though what if Luke is the one he should’ve trusted and not Grover. There’s a lot of inconsistencies that I’ve noticed in this show so far that revolve around Grover’s character that just make me think. What if the rug is being pulled out from under us here?

Didn’t like how they changed annabeth. In the book, percy was the one always being disobedient and standing up to gods annabeth was always trying to keep him calm. Here he is disrespecting ares in the face. Didn’t seem in character and wise.

Nah, it's okay. She' starting to see why the gods aren't what they seem because of percy's influence. On the other hand, Percy is learning to be a little bit cautious because of what happened with Athena. They are learning from each other. It makes sense story-wise. She's still intellegent and I like that she's not just blindly following the gods anymore. Besides, when Percy threatened Ares at the end they still showed how they restrained him from doing more damage. Still true to their dynamic.

She should be wise and agree with whatever he says anything beyond this is emotional response which doesn’t fit her character

Annabeth is fully capable of letting her emotions get to her specially when she's in the presencens of the god of war who canonically can rally their emotions. And again my point above, look at it in the context of the show, not the books. They are not making the exact same copy of the book, it's adaptation not a replica.
