This one I was yelling at the end, “They better not end it on the beach! He better go into the water!” And then he went in the water and I sighed a sigh of relief.

I did the EXACT same thing. These short episodes are killing me
@deanxiii15958 ай бұрын
Yeah. That's one of the downsides of this series i notice. They tend to skip or shorten any scene that uses CGI extensively. Argus was cut out, the hellhound attacking Percy in Capture the Flag, the conversation of Percy with the Nereid at the bottom of St Louis Arch, and Percy using his water powers in Tunnel of Love. I think it's due to the budget constraints and that's a bummer because the Percy Jackson universe needs a lot of CGI to depict all the monsters and mythical scenery Percy will encounter as that's the main attraction of the series.

I thought some episodes earlier in the season were too short (especially episode 2), but this one felt exactly the right length to me. Right length for the story that was told in it, I mean. The chapter in the book wasn't very long from my memory and I feel like they really milked all the worldbuilding they could out of the Lotus casino as a setting here. Hermes wasn't there in the book so all the info about his and Luke's relationship was show-only. The satyr Augustus wasn't there in the books either, but his character helped the writers add more information about the search for Pan into the show. This builds Grover's character and motivations and is important for future seasons If they had a longer episode, I guess they could have continued for a bit and then ended the episode at the entrance to the Underworld or something instead of where it ended now 🤔🤔 I can't really picture it working smoothly from a writing perspective It's fun to hear your thoughts on the show!!
@unknownunion-u2j8 ай бұрын
yeah i agree the chapter wasn’t very long and it wasn’t really that important idk what ppl really expected because i mean in the books it was fun but like i feel like some ppl had too many expectations coming in to it when the book didn’t even have that much in it
@penguins7768 ай бұрын
They could have showed them discovering that’s the lotus (as in the odyssey ) hotel instead of info dumping that it in but other than that it was a decently sized episode for the casino.
@pinsandneedles38 ай бұрын
@@penguins776 They could have, but that doesn't really have much to do with my comment on runtime. It certainly wouldn't add 15 minutes to it, I don't think. I was responding to the commentary in the video about wanting 45-60 minute episodes
@pinsandneedles38 ай бұрын
@@penguins776 Also, I wanted to add that I like the way they did it in the show. I would *much* rather have the Hermes and Luke backstory in this episode than the mystery of the Lotus. Since they are at the casino specifically to meet Hermes in the show, I think it would be kind of dumb if they didn't realize there could be something 'off' about the place from the get-go

Agree with you. The runtime was used wisely.

When you said "youre too young to be in the casino" i was like YES!! My grandparents lived in Vegas and I would visit them for the summer. The amount of times I was told to get off the floor or away from the machines, regardless of the fact that I was hold leftovers from dinner and on my phone, was actually ridiculous. Like I'm well aware they could loose their license for minors beings too close to machines but still. But i understand its the Lotus Casino and in the books, it was primarily kids that were there, like a get away from parents spending time in Vegas and on the Strip.

Matthew, your poker face as a book reader is seriously impressive, haha. Love both your reactions! I agree with your thing about time length & pacing (I mean I do also think the show has been doing a good job with what it's working with) - I'm hoping that because this is season 1 they're playing around and still figuring things out. Plus I remember that even in the first book it was very fast paced, like they defeated one monster and then immediately went on to the next one and they didn't really get much time to breathe. Deffo agree on an extra 10 - 15 minutes being beneficial I think. but then I also agree with Shannon that you don't want it to drag. My bugbear with this episode was honestly the slowness of the casino scene; the fact they guessed quickly that they shouldnt eat the lotus flower although the twist about it being pumped in the air was interesting; and the lack of the kids letting loose and having any fun. Don't get me wrong, there are things about this episode that I really enjoyed as well but it kinda just fell short for me. I wouldnt have even minded them finding out how the lotus casino works if we got a montage or afew scenes of them kicking back and relaxing. The two changes at the end shocked me but honestly I can vibe with them, at least it keeps me on my toes wondering what's happening next. From the looks of it the last two episodes are gonna be a rollercoaster! Sorry this was a whole ass ramble LOL

Dude, the lack of fun! I wanted at least one of them to wear a fuzzy hotel robe! Buuuut….spoilers….I can understand why they rushed it. The time passing has to happen SO quickly considering who we meet later in the series….

I kind of don't get why everyone is dogging on this episode (not you guys as much as the Fandom at large) because I liked it a lot. I think the only real issue with the show is the pacing, and I'm blaming Disney for that 100000000%. I like the changes they're making from the book, I like that it's strung together with more of a plot and less "the trio stumbled into Medusa, and then into the arch, and then into the lotus..." I like them setting up plot stuff that will pay off MUCH later with a Luke and Hermes! And Dua Lipa was a PERFECT substitute for Lady Gaga, I had levitating stuck in my head for hours after watching the episode

Imho people don’t like this episode because they imagined the lotus casino differently or they think that this scene could only be like in the film. So for me the lotus casino in the film was disappointing because it felt like teen nightclub then in the books i had the film version in my head so for me the book was lost for me. But in the show it shows that they go into the lotus casino with a plan but they getting distracted by Hermes and that shows how ADHD affects people with time blindness. Luke commenting on Percy and Annabeth about their friendship is another way that ADHD people tend to use to get the attention away from what they are talking about.

Hamilton jokes aside lol I loved Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hermes. I was expecting a more comedic take on the character but I thought the seriousness of his scene was a better and more interesting choice. They're continuing to do a great job with adding more emotional depth to the story, and the acting there was fantastic. I think it's one of my favorite scenes in the series so far Also BOOK SPOILERS ahead proceed at your own risk I was not expecting the episode to open up with Kronos like that, but I love how he's been getting gradually more menacing with each dream sequence. Honestly having him be a guy in a suit somehow makes him more terrifying. There's something additionally scary about characters you know are powerful and dangerous who look unsettlingly normal

In the book, they stumble upon the casino, spend a little time there, and then leave. They literally already added more to it to make it longer.

I agree, an extra 15 minutes could give you a solid fight and team/world building
@unknownunion-u2j8 ай бұрын
an extra fifteen minutes to do what tho 😭 i do think the time should be longer but in the book the casino isn’t a big part in it so like what else could they have done? i’m just curious
@karatekoala42708 ай бұрын
@@unknownunion-u2j oh on this episode maybe a bit more exploration of the casino but this episode is solid. I'm talking about other episodes. For example, I really liked last week and I hate spiders, but I still would've liked to have maybe a fight before the chair to show Annabeth and Percy fighting side by side.

The hotel scene here had more in it than the book did. I don't know if they could have made this one up to 40/45 minutes without it starting with scenes beforehand or afterward. As an episode largely focused on this part of the book, I think they put together an episode about as good as it could get. Maybe the beginning of this episode could have been added to the end of the last episode, and the end added to the beginning of the next episode. There was likely a way to make this season with 45 minute episodes, but it would have been a 5 or 6 episode season or something and those usually get a lot of pushback. We're getting 4.5-5 hours of content adapted from a book a little over 300 pages. That's quite impressive.

Awesome video ‼️💯 I have 💙 every single episode and I 🩵 how they have adapted the book in series. For me the most important thing is that they are showing what it’s like for people with ADHD which the films did not show. Rewatch and pay attention to when Percy and Annabeth are talking to Grover after they find him in the vr game there is a little boy’s voice calling Bianca , Bianca also when Annabeth is talking to Percy about Luke and Hermes this is an audio easter egg for the Diangelos which will be in book 3 and also pay attention to 2 kids in purple shirts running behind Annabeth that’s easter egg to camp Jupiter the Roman demigod camp is from the heroes of Olympus series.😅😊

Perhaps not knowing how well it has actually become I could see Disney saying your runtime is X. You get 8 episodes but can't go over your overall total of X. I can totally see Disney doing that. So with the massive popularity the show has gotten and this being the biggest feedback being episode length so more seasons hopefully will Garner longer episodes. Love the reactions glad I found this channel.
