Matthew grew up reading these books so this is an exciting time for him however Shannon has not read the Percy Jackson books or seen the Percy Jackson movies! So this is her first time watching! @@isabellp.5730 It's very frustrating how common it is. I don't expect anyone to know the particulars of the Greek Underworld, but it would be nice if everyone didn't immediately jump to Christianity-based conclusions... No hate to anyone in particular, this is a thing in most of the reaction videos I've seen covering this episode - but it's definitely a bias to keep in mind while interacting with other religions and cultures!!

The writing in this episode was so smart. First there's Procrustes' line: "Fitting's not easy for guys like us, am I right? Our parents make it so hard. Stretching us, and twisting us and hacking off pieces to make us seem more like them." Then Sally's: "I want him to know who he is before your family tries to tell him who they want him to be." Then there's Poseidon's agreement not to force/impose a sense of identity onto his son until Percy already knew who he was (which is what Sally wanted) and was ready to meet him. Both Sally's and Poseidon's responses to the situation were exact antithesis to Procrustes' line from the beginning. They let Percy come into his own instead of forcing him into a mold to be a reflection of what they (or the gods) wanted. This show has been doing a lot to drive home the generational trauma theme/low-key blast toxic parenting but this and episode 5 handled it the best I think.

Hades just being kind of a weird uncle was my favorite subversion from the books. We always see him as a villain because our modern culture (heavily skewed by Christianity) is weird about death and conceptualizes it in ways the Ancient Greeks didn't. But Hades is just the guy who oversees all the afterlife places. He's not even the Death God--that's someone else's job entirely.

I strongly disliked Duplass Hades, big deviation from the book. His Hades felt harmless, ungod like. Hades should be bitter, cold, and angry. Walton Goggins should have been Hades instead of Duplass, Duplass would have been a much better fit for King Minos.

Filming went from june 2022 into January 2023 Within that timespan Walker was 13 and a half up to just after his 14th birthday, so to be fair, they are gonna be older, its impossible to avoid, I do agree, walker is visibly older in the later episodes, even his voice is noticeablely different from the beginning (not the voiceover opening, that was recorded later, im talking the museum scene)

@heyitsmira17 😢 Tbf Aryan is already like 17, so his growth spurts are kinda done, and Walkers like 5'10 now maybe? Even he isn't THAT tall (he was 5'4 or so during the show) But yeah that's still 6 inches

@@Timister0902you don’t stop growing until you’re 25 so Aryan can get taller. But it makes visual sense since satryes are supposed to be short.

Grover, the satyre, the cheerful creature of nature is so nervous and claustrophobic in the underworld. Cerberus, the puppy... so funny with the red ball... At last, we can see a good adaptation of Hades and the greek underworld. Very different of christian hell. Predictions of non-book readers are so good to watch. Yes, the plot is not simple and the story is all over the place and not predictable. :) Thank you ! We want more episodes !

7:00 this was my favorite scene of the episode. It showcased Annabeth's quick thinking in such subtle yet impactful ways. Managing to climb onto Cerberus and start scratching him while their running for their lives, then to use the ball she took back from Grover to throw to Percy whi squeaks it, dog jumps and she jumps off his neck onto the cliff face right on time. Dude this sounds like some shit from one of my DnD campaigns!

Crusty’s hit the same tone we get in the book. The gods do seem to want to cut and mold their children to be like them, and Percy confronting an older sibling is amazing after meeting his sister, the Nereid. Percy chooses to put the responsibility of harming others on Crusty, not their father. This is a great intro to NEXT season! I loved the sound design choice to deaden the voices…because they’re in the land of the dead. Anabeth got to show both her ignorance of movies and her smarts AND that she has a secret regret ALL in one episode. 🤯 “My dog ate my homework,” excuse was awesome. Grover blaming himself was cute/sad. Percy leaving Anabeth first and then later leaving his mom was a nice parallel. Hades saying the same thing Sally did, “Depends on how hard you make this,” was a 👩‍🍳💋 The asymmetrical framing of Sally with the door on the right side, our point of view, was a fantastic choice. Kronos being tied to sand, like one might find in a time turner, was perfect. The fact that Percy already ran out of time shows that Kronos, in a sense, has already won.

As a parent myself, I think Sally just couldn’t think of any excuse she would “get rid” of her son except the fact that she’s trying to protect him from monsters. Otherwise she would just keep him close to her at a public school or something. She knows her son is smart and has made a good point. Since she can’t spill the secret, she’s just trying to make him feel better with a diner’s shake, a nice conversation, a hug. But she can’t say the truth without putting him in danger. She’s already talked to him so saying something nice isn’t going to make a difference to how he feels. I love that this also shows Percy’s stubbornness and that Sally respects her son for it!

Oo, another thing I just noticed was the “Crusty’s Waterbed Palace” sign is backwards to the veiwers. For those who are not dyslexic, this is a great way to make people FEEL dyslexic. It took me forever to read it.

so i see you guys calling the underwolrd "Hell", the underworld is not Hell, the underworld is the after life, the whole after life, Evil Souls, Good Souls, Meh Souls, they all go to Hades, the all go down in Greek Mythology, in a general way you can say that Hades rule over, Hell, Purgatory and Heaven in greek Mythology, he is the God of Dead, All Dead

Hades is the god of underworld. The god of death is thanatos

@@vitrya.r9194 Right and wrong. Thanatos is the god of DEATH: he is the reaper, the one that take the souls of the dead to the underworld. Hades is the god of the DEAD: he rule over all dead souls, like a shepard of souls. Thanatos=DEATH Hades=DEAD

@@vitrya.r9194 Hades is the king of the underworld, He's the god of the dead and riches, and sometimes kind of considered some kind of god of the earth or at least of minerals. in the sence that minerals e preciou smetais are part of "riches"

I noticed it too, he did mature a bit during the show. I peeped it first with his voice. It lost a lot of the squeakiness as the show progressed. A good shot grab from memory would be cafeteria in school, getting claimed, Hephaestus trap, ninja vanish, showdown with Ares

Yeah I noticed the thunder and lightning it was really good storytelling. It also harkens back to what Hermes said last episode about how it hurts Poseidon not to be able to talk to Percy.

Hades is the single chillest god in all of Greek Mythology. The memes about Hades are fantastic. When Hercules comes needing to take Cerberus to Olympus, he asks Hades and Hades says "Sure, just don't hurt him." Orpheus asks for his wife back and Hades says "Sure, just don't look back while you head back to the surface." Very simple, sticks to his word, and actually runs his domain so there aren't any problems lol

I had two issues with this episode. First, why not enter the Underworld through the main entrance at DOA Studios? They could have used the actual studio lot where the show is being made as DOA. Second, they should have shown both the Fields of Punishment and Elysium, like in the book. So many people keep confusing the Underworld to Hell. It would have cleared up that issue by showing the Fields, where the bad people go, and Elysium, where the good people go.

Time. They wanted to nod at crusty but didn’t have time for the full sequence so they combined. People’s main gripes are with disneys episode length imo that is the source of most of the problems,

They probably didn't have enough time for that. This is probably supposed to be more like Percy and Nico and then later Nico and Will Solace using the Door of Orpheus in order to sneak in.

The scenes of the fields were pretty graphic ngl. I don’t blame them bc it is Disney. Like Percy legit describes people running around naked and being tortured. But im sure they’ll go into it more in later seasons. You just gotta let it cook bc explaining/showing stuff in a show is different from imagining it through text.
