That hearing occurred right around the start of winter break, and that's when they learned Buckbeak could possibly be executed, so all three began researching. However, Ron and Harry promptly forgot after the whole Christmas/Firebolt thing so Hermione did all the research until Buckbeak lost his hearing and that's when Ron takes over. It's unclear exactly when that is, but we know it's "around Easter" (the next time they see Hagrid after they learn about the lost hearing is the same day Hermione drops Divination which "confirms" Trawlaney's prediction about someone leaving around Easter). Of course, this is a fairly vague timeframe as Easter moves quite a lot - but Hermione did spend at least a few months doing all the research on her own.

McGonagall had to negotiate pretty hard in order to get her that time turner, though. It probably would've taken months, which would mean that they were talking about it before Black even escaped. Hagrid's legal issues don't come up until after the start of term where she already has the time turner, & taking care of Harry & Ron while also being determined to get all perfect grades are entirely her own prerogative, & therefore wouldn't be considered in granting her the time turner.

Them all having a time turner actually explains how they passed divination. If they took their divination classes on the 2nd or 3rd turn then they have already seen at least 1 hour in the future. I would not put it past Crouch Jr. to create a minor event just so he could predict it. Easiest homework ever! I also agree with the logic that if Hermione's time turner is the only one to ever enter Hogwarts then it must be the same one that was loaned to the other 3 (and who knows how many more) students prior.

The problem is that Percy also achieved all 12 NEWTS, which you would think would require a time-turner, however, Percy's 7th year was at the _same time_ as Hermione's 3rd year. Kinda messes up the theory that they all used the same one time-turner.

That's what I was thinking. The times they would need it didn't overlap, so it could work. And the ministry letters could just be a bunch of beuraucratic stuff that needs to happen any time it's necessary for a student to have a time turner since they're such dangerous items.

Another solution: in book 5, Harry's excuse for occlumency lessons was remedial potions with Snape. Perhaps it's possible to achieve OWLs after the normal testing date, or take extra classes during time off, as the students responding to "remedial potions" didn't react as if it was totally unheard of, just embarrassing for Harry. Perhaps there are also ways to achieve these OWLs through self study or homeschooling, which Hermione would not have had an easy opportunity to do as a muggleborn.

A big part of Hermione’s character (especially early on) is how by the book she is. If they told her to only use the time turner to get to class, she’d do just that. I've often thought about this. The Hogwarts schedule is pretty confusing. It often bothers me because the Gryffindor's have no classes with the Ravenclaws. Not even electives. Yet Ginny has classes with Luna. To me this indicates the schedule moves with the year.

If that were the case then everyone would have the same schedule just different teachers to fill the time slots. Realistically a school does a fairly set schedule by grade with little variations between which teacher has what time slot. The 9th grade classes will usually have these available time slots and the 10th grade have these. Not well the class of 2020 gets these time slots every year till graduation.

Should be a time turner designated for only a very short travel back in time, just enough to take another subject. And no possibility of going forward in time. As we know from the saving of Sirius the turner can go back at least three hours....maybe four is the maximum. So at noon you can start the morning again with other subjects.

I had a thought concerning the philosophers stone, the book states that Percy keeps giving Harry really bad advice in chess, and Percy seems like the type of character that would be good at chess, he's smart and he grew up with Ron whose good at chess, so one reason for this could be that hes so tired that he isn't thinking clearly

You must remember that the quote about Hermione's time Turner the only one to enter Hogwarts could be a lie McGonagall told a second year to make sure she would not be tempted to discuss it with anyone. Another possibility is that Bill and Percy had alternate day classes. One day they went to a certain class and another day they went to a different one. Also remember that Harry got a good OWL grade for every class he cared about. It would be easy for Bill and Percy to just scrape by in the classes they care less about and still say they have an OWL in every class.

I think that the reason Hermione struggled with her class load is because she made a promise to ONLY use it to go to her classes. This would mean that she wouldn’t have taken extra study time, because she was trying so hard to live up to her promise. Also I think the reason Mcgonagall had Hermione promise to do exactly that is because there had previously been problems with the people who had used the time turner before her. It’s not hard to imagine that Crouch got up to some Dealth Eater type stuff or that Bill used the time turner to cause a bit of mischief, or even that Percy used the time turner to do extra patrols to live up to his position as Perfect

I think it has something to do with the fact that everything that happens when you time travel has to have already happened. But you didn't see it happen, yet. But if you see yourself, but you hadn't already seen yourself, that's a paradox that can't be fixed. Even this IDEA could drive you mad if you think about it too long, but actually experiencing it could also have unforeseen effects that might alter reality or cause other issues. Did that make sense? It turns out, it's really hard to explain time travel.

i would say hermionie was the only student given a time turner, because shes muggleborn. Percy and crouch jr would have been far more able to study during the summer break, and so before giving a child permission to time travel, the school/ministry would have allowed them to practice magic outside of school.

Honestly, I just think JK made a mistake in saying that they got 12 OWL's. It is impossible to take all of the 12 classes at the same time due to an overlap in the schedule (unless the schedule changed). So the only option was to use a time turner. But at the time we got the the 12 owl information about P and Bill in CoS, JK probably hadn't figured out time turners yet. So imo, that is just another mistake of JK. We can always just ask her on Twitter.

I actually never really thought about this but now that I do , I feel like maybe Bill, Percy or Barty Crouch Jr. didn't have time turners because they didn't feel the need for it . Hermione, in my opinion, was the most eager . For one , Fred, George and Ginny ( the three Weasleys mostly responsible for teasing other characters ) weren't really seen talking about Bill being extremely nerdy like Hermione , and Percy was always described as pompous, arrogant and irritating but not exactly as studious as Hermione. What I think the reason they didn't need a time turner was because even though they did take all subjects , they didn't attend every class . I do agree that they can't have missed all lessons for a class and passed it just from studying on their own , but perhaps they looked through the syllabus and decided which lessons they'd need to attend and which they'd understand on their own . Hermione , however , couldn't tolerate missing even one lesson as she was determined to get the highest score being the perfectionist she was . Not wanting to miss any lesson is why she , I think , required a time turner . She was cracking under the pressure of the 12 classes not because she was trying to take all of them , but because she was trying to ace each one . Bill , Percy and Barty managed to pass all 12 and Hermione decided to drop two classes because she wasn't too interested in them , and mainly because she wanted to ace all classes which was practically impossible when even attending each lesson needed a time turner . Just what I thought .

Well the fact that there is a room full of them and that McGonagall knows she can get her one (even though she 14 and from a muggle family) means that the Ministry probably have trusted her in the past and that it worked out well. It is also possible that the reason why it was hard was that multiple students could have needed the "only time-turner in Hogwarts" and that several house directors were eager to give it to one of their students and McGonagall had to fight to give it to Hermione and prove to the ministry she was the perfect candidate. It is even possible that each year many students are chosen as potential borrowers but the Ministry doesn't give their permission. J.K Rowling said she had Hermione give back the only Time-Turner ever to enter Hogwarts, which doesn't mean she was the first borrower, but also she did that not to prove that Hermione was the only and first one, but to make sure this wouldn't affect the rest of the serie. Having a Time-Turner would have made it impossible to continue the story cause everything could have been fixed or at least adjusted... From every Triwizard task, to checking who put Harry's name, etc etc... She allowed a benefit to the serie but had to take it back cause of the number of drawbacks. She even said that when writing fantasy you must be very careful with everything you invent, meaning she either realized what she had done after or she had anticipated erasing them quickly. She even destroyed all Time-Turners in Order of the Phoenix so they wouldn't be an option to fix anything later.
