I actually have a theory about Luna. I think Nargles actually represent the people that bully Luna, and Wrackspurts are the mean things people say about her and others. For example, when Harry meets Luna in the beginning of Order of the Phoenix she says the charm she is wearing "keeps away the Nargles" which makes sense because when the bullies see her wearing it they think she is crazy and stay away. Also, at the end of OOTP she says her possessions were taken by Nargles, when we know it was most likely bullies. Now for the Wrackspurts. When Harry is stuck on the train and Luna finds him she says that his head is full of Wrackspurts, which it probably is seen as Draco Malfoy just got him stuck on the train and insulted him. Luna said Wrackspurts, "float in through your ears and make your brain go fuzzy." That makes sense because you hear insults, begin to think about them, and your brain does kind of "go fuzzy." That's just my theory! PS Good job to you for making it to the end! It means a lot! Edit: Omg thank you guys I have never really gotten anything but my own likes so thank you!:))

One of my favorite subtle details in the books is the fact that Neville isn't actually bad at magic. For the first five books, he's using an inherited wand. His wand didn't choose him so of course his magic isn't accurate or powerful. But then he gets a wand that's his and he becomes a competent, brave, confident leader. Its a good way of showing that people can excel if they're given the tools they need.

ON TOP OF IT ALL: with Harry and Ginny naming their sons after James and Severus, I feel like they symbolically reconcile the two former enemies. Albus's name could be the missing link between them, standing for the force of understanding, peace-making and tolerance that he has always shown others, much like Lily, Hermione and Remus. The ending shows that the virtue coming out of correcting wrongdoings can be passed on a third generation through love and compassion. PS : This video was both heartbreaking and heartwarming 😭 I love the echoes btw the 2 generations ❤️

yeah Ron and Harry were scared shitless several times especially in the earlier books lol... I guess it's about how they handled it vs. how Neville handled it. Also WHAT they were afraid of was different. Neville was afraid of day-to-day stuff, like Snape and Slytherin bullies. Ron is afraid of spiders. Harry is afraid of getting killed by Voldemort so, you know, Neville definitely faces his fears more often than Harry and Ron.

Another sin of Remus (that is better in Hermione) is that he wasn't able to standing against his friends. Sure, it may be because of his insecurity for being a werewolf, and not wanting to lose the only friends who would support him in the way the Marauders do. But, still. He's not arrogant, he didn't bullied Snape. Bur he coudn't tell Sirius and Jmes to not do that. In the Order of Pheonix, he says he coudn't keep his friends away from problems. Bur, as Harry think in the same book, after seeing Snape's memory, he wasn't even trying. Hermione, in the other hand, was never afraid of standing for what she thinks is right, even if it means ddisagree and even argue with her friends

That is true. Lupin was very insecure and had a serious case of bystander syndrome. I still love him, though. Being a werewolf is not easy, and he didn't stand up to Sirius and James probably because he didn't feel strong enough to. Remember, the werewolf transformation is painful, the werewolf in question loses all human sense and basically becomes a real, bloodthirsty wolf, and the condition is transmissible from parent to offspring; it is only luck that Teddy was not born a werewolf. Speaking of which, Lupin was not born a werewolf, while Hermione was always a Muggle-born and hence, no alternate universe would have existed where she was not what she is, while the same is not true for Lupin, who probably thinks about how life would be different for him if he wasn't bitten. I also don't know how much I agree with Hermione not being bothered by her Muggle-born ancestry. She doesn't let it affect her actions, and she obviously knows there's nothing she can do about it, but she is clearly hurt whenever people make some sort of comment about her.

While he's still weak and sickly every month, as long as he has his potion, he's still got the mind of a human, even tho the pain of the transformation isn't lessened. That's what made it so beautiful that his friends became unregistered animagi for him--so he could run around with them in the forbidden forest while nobody wondered why children were with a wolf, or out past curfew. Harry's kindness and humility is basically THE key factor between the two groups. Harry isn't afraid of clueing Ron in when he's going too far, he's not afraid of helping Hermione to get out of her shell and loosen her up a bit, Harry helps tell Neville that he shouldn't let Crabbe and Goyle walk all over him which indirectly leads to Neville gaining self-confidence, Ginny already liked him right from the word 'Go.' but slightly changed her reason for liking him at the end of Book 2 (Harry noted at the start of Book 3 that she seemed even more shy around him after the events of CoS), and Luna, well, she was one of the first people who truly had some understanding of what he was going through in book 5, so he repaid in kind by calling her his friend and meaning it. He even tells Neville and Luna he thinks they're cool because they supported him when he needed it the most. Granted, Harry is not perfect, but he's clearly the deciding factor in how things turned out between his generation and the Maurader's era.

2:01 Finally! Finally, someone understood! If not James's unnecessary bullying, Snape could end up totally distancing himself from the Dark Arts! And what was Lily doing when he was constantly humiliated by the Marauders? Nothing. Absolutely not a thing, although she knew James admires her and can do a lot for her. She tried to help Severus once, at the end of their fifth year. He called her a Mudblood, because well, he just got humiliated in front of many students, so it is normal that he reacted with anger. Boom! Friendship ended. Lily, instead of distancing herself from Severus should have try to end the conflict between him and the Marauders, tell James to stop and both of them to apologize. This could have a completely different ending.

Aside from the part where you argued Severus calling Lily a slur wasn't an inherent friendship ender, this is a spot on explanation of how Ginny is actually the better version of Lily and that Lily wasn't a special case - she had a fatal flaw just like the others from the Marauders' generation. Lily's fatal flaw was that, for whatever reason, she mainly kept her opinions to herself in school and didn't insert herself into situations she SHOULD have. Tbh, she barely has a personality, kind of like Ginny in the movies - we hear she was uncommonly kind, but we certainly don't see that from her consistently and we rarely get a glimpse into her perspective. But Ginny in the books is outspoken and calls out bs as she sees it. Book Ginny would never have quietly permitted someone to bully her friend, ESPECIALLY if the bully was someone she knew she could manipulate because they had a crush on her. And the funny thing is, it's the subtlest flaw of all of them, but it has the most wide-reaching impact. If Lily had been more like Ginny, not only would she have actively defended and protected Severus, resulting in him turning into a completely different kind of adult, but she also might have completely changed the Marauders' perspective on bullying, resulting in ALL of them changing and Peter especially turning into a completely different kind of adult.

@@Pr0fessorScience I think with the slur thing, especially since it was a very severe one, I get why they'd break off after that, but I don't think it inherently is something that would cause that. It certainly can be, tho. For the rest, that's a very astute look at this. Lily did not step up where she should have, wheras Ginny very much stepped up, and the consequences of both resulted in very significant changes to the long term of the friend group.

I'm pretty sure we have at least one more instance in Snape's memories of Lily basically refusing to give James or the Marauders the time of day because they were bullying, arrogant jerks. She calls James a "toerag" I think (which is a pretty hilarious put-down). I think she *did* in fact stick up for Snape and protect him from worse bullying for years before they had that falling out. Even in that scene, it seemed obvious that James started trying to walk back/hide what he was doing when Lily confronted him. But Snape had just had his own spell turned against him in the most humiliating way possible, and Lily saw it--which I think was probably unusual rather than the norm. He lashed out at her in humiliation and then deeply regretted it. I don't think Snape would have still considered Lily his true love and only real friend for 20+ years later if she hadn't been actively trying to protect him.

In the video you talk about how we see James being a bully and hear about James being a good guy, something I've always wondered is how perspective affects memories in the Harry Potter series. It is widely accepted that prejudices, history and general personality affects the way we retain and remember memories irl and how two people can remember the same situation in different ways. So how does that play out in the series? In that scene does James look so bad because it is Snape's perspective and as such he sees himself as completely innocent, the attacked victim that did nothing wrong. Examples as to changes perspective might be that James was getting revenge over something Snape did before the memory started or if Snape's affection for Lily and jealously over James mean he see Lily being harsher to James then she really was as it is very harsh for her to fall in love with him 2 years later, etc. I wonder if we saw that memory from James/Sirius view or a neutral view how different the memory would be. We see that Sirius and even Remus remembers that moment more fondly. It's not like we don't see that a person can alter their own memories (Slughorn). I wonder what other people's opinions are or am I just overthinking it? :)
@sarahkristinelervag9855
@sarahkristinelervag9855 5 жыл бұрын
Well when it comes to people having different perspective on one person, I have experienced something. I have experienced someone I used to be friends with, one where we had just grewn apart from, say about someone who was bullying me or had bullied me at the time, when I told her something about it or just saying that he was mean or something I don't remember exactly what it was. Anyway what she said then was only "he is nice to me", like does it means that just because he is nice to you that he is nice to everyone. Like take a more extreme example, take people who abuse their significant other and or child/children. People can have no clue and think that they are a really nice person, while at home they are beating them to a pulp. Sometimes one point of view is more valid than the other. And don't forget what Dumbledoor warned us, you will not see how a person really is from looking at how they treat their equal, but how they treat their inferior, or who they look at as their inferior. Also you could se or read that from day one that James was hostile towards Snape. I also don't think that it makes James a good person if it was the case that Severus had done something to Snape before this. Also to me the situation did not like something for revenge, but for humiliation. Like if there were equal in hurting each other from the beginning or had an equal rivalry, they would be more like Harry and Draco where there were more equal battles more in my opinion.

@@rhiannondaye1263 I was not trying to say that Snape was innocent. But I feel that in the beginning of their time at Hogwarts I feel that James might have started to bully Snape then, and that Snape eventually learned to fight back. Also the way James called Snape names and what he called him tell me that he did bully Snape but Snape learned to fight back and was probably sick and tired of being bullied. The thing we hear Snape however call James the most, is arrogant. While James however was things like Snivelus, and commented on his hair and other physical features, as well as other things. And bullies don't need a reason to bully you, if you are weird or anything they don't like, you will get attacked in some shape or form. Yes Snape was not innocent in everyway, but that does not mean that the things James did right. James did things to make fun of and humiliate Snape which in my opinion, is a lot more though out and malicious than just Hexing back after someone have attacked you for years. Snape and his mother was also abused by Snape's father as well, which may change how you eventually react to getting attacked. Also James had a totally different status in school and brought his gang of friend and sometimes other people to watch whatever he dicided to do to Snape. And of course everyone see them selves an the innocent ones or the one who is right, but that does not mean one are never right just because most people see themselves as the ones who are right. And we also know that Lilly for a long time at first did not like James and tried to avoid him because of how he treated Snape which shows that she thought what he was doing was wrong, even if it was not her he bullied.

Snape is complicated character, but I really don't think that Sirius' quote (yeah, it was Sirius', not Dumbledore's) about treating your equals and inferior ones does apply to James-Severus situation. Severus NEVER was inferior to James. They hated each other from the beginning because of that stupd house rivarly, it was something normal to them, insult people from Gryffindor or Slytherin before they were even sorted. First time they've met, it was only exchange of insults, and Snape did not left James' unanswered, he knew where he stands, what he believes, and didn't feel bad because some Gryffindor boy told him something rude. Snape was in Slug Club. James wasn't. Both had something they were good at, and were recognized at school, just in different fields. Yeah, quidditch was a big thing, but wasn't that Severus, who valued brain over muscles at age of 11? Also, like many pointed before, Severus often used curses against James and other Marauders, and let me remind you it was one boy against four. Later he had young Deatheaters on his side, but years before he was alone and still had a chance against them. His worst memory was what it was. Worst memory. Nothing worse happened to him concerning James. He was humiliated in front of girl he liked, it was bad, yes, but was it really worst that could happen to one? Not trying to defend bullies, but Harry never saw this particular memory again when he had a chance. Yes, James was wrong there, as well as Sirius, but I'm pretty sure memory about Mary MacDonald wasn't there without reason. Snape most probably gave Harry a context of the story, but Harry missed it. If you go back to OoP and read that scene right where it should be in DH, it looks a bit different. Harry don't know what expressions James and Sirius had when they've approached Snape that day, because he wasn't looking at them, but they weren't laughing. James said his words quietly, Sirius was watchful. Seeing this second time would show details Harry missed at first, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't just their everyday encounter. It was their way of saying "if dark arts is your friends' way of joking, we'll see how they like ours". Not mature, not fair, but quite possible if I might say. And again, Snape wasn't inferior to James. But Neville and many other students were to Snape, and that's the only way we could use Sirius' quote to define James and Severus. Not all we could say about them, of course.
@Blade-hf9po
@Blade-hf9po 5 жыл бұрын
Pretty much the entire story is based off Harry's POV. So what we see is what others choose to share with him. There are many things that happen, many conversations behind closed doors that we never know about. Bear in mind, no one wanted Harry to see James in a bad light, of any sort. Not even Severus. The moment Sirius and remus know harry saw this, they try to convince him this wasn't normal behavior. They both know that scene was as bad as Harry described. Take the memory of a random prank(like covering someone in slime). Any of these four is going to focus on the planning, execution and, maybe, them laughing about it afterwards. Take that same memory, from the one pranked, and the focus will be in different areas. In this case, the execution, the probable laughter, and the aftermath(getting the slime off + crying/rage). Our own opinion on this prank is going to be different depending on which memory we have access to, and our own lives' experience.

As explained on the Harry Potter Wikia, a Head Boy/Girl needs to have "...an honest, good, and hard-working personality..." which you think would exclude bullies. Yes, I know that James supposedly stopped bullying other students in his 6th year (at least in public), but one year of reform shouldn't be enough to proclaim him a moral exemplar for the entire school. What kind of message does that send to all the other students? That bullying is okay, as long as your victims are Slytherins? What kind of message does that send to Snape and the other victims? That they don't matter as much as the wealthy Quidditch star? That if your parents are political allies of the headmaster, you can get away with anything? You have to wonder how many Slytherins and other Pureblood students were driven into Voldemort's arms by this. Seriously, it would make a great political rallying point. "See? The existing power structure is rigged against us. That's why we need to undermine the current Ministry of Magic and take over!" Nonsense, of course, but it might sway embittered adolescents who were previously on the fence.
@quoniam426
@quoniam426 5 жыл бұрын
Also I think that Dumbledore wanted James to learn about responsabilities, he thought he could become better. But True, Dumbledore being a Griffindor himself maybe he thought that James would keep an eye on the Slytherins for him. Just remember that Dumbledore knew that Voldemort was already up to something, so he needed someone to check on his potential adversaries at school. Possible that in fact both factions radicalized themselves at the same time with their respective attitudes towards eachother. I don't think that Dumbledore wanted to try to prevent a war since he already knew it was coming. In that case, as the Romans would say, "Si vis pacem, para bellum", If you seek peace, prepare for war. Even in the second war, McGonagall never offered the Slytherins a chance to participate to the battle against Voldemort, knowing they would side with him, she told Filtch to send them to the dungeons.

Ive always disliked James and I never will like him. Also with lily, I understand severus called her a mudblood but they've been friends since before Hogwarts. Severus was also being bullied by the maradures. She's a hypocrite. I understand Snape went down s dark path but I just think lily and has father was the tip of the iceberg. While I'm not justifying snapes actions towards harry, I'm just saying that the potters are terrible people. While james has wised up he was still a bully. He will always have bullying tendencies.

@@axnne7152 Wow, so no one can EVER change from when they were a child? Sorry, I disagree. The Potters were the bravest and the best and Snape bullied just as much as he was bullied - according to Lupin he was always hexing people - only Snape never grew up. The only reason he worked for Dumbledore is that he wanted revenge against Voldemort - not for any higher or better purpose. Pure selfishness. Snape freely CHOSE to side with the Purebloods and with Dark Magic and ended up killing his friendship with Lily - James was not responsible for that. Snape also decided to become a death eater when the so-called "bully" James put his life on the line by becoming a member of the Order. Snape happily reported the prophecy to Voldemort, knowing full well that a baby was going to die - he only got upset when he found out it was Lily's baby. What a hero! Harry was much, much too kind to Snape. Snape was not brave, not good, not actually in love - just obsessed, bullying, and juvenile right up until the end - unlike James who actually became a man.

GET INSPIRED: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpirqINmisyUeqM Seriously, i have something to say, so Listen! We, as a community, need to Tweet towards J.K.Rowling that she should allow the Copyright for Harry Potter to be losened a bit. Cause we need some Sort of Reboot, as almost all books are Lost in Adaptation. The movies just do not represent the franchise right; evidend by Dobby alone. If you know what i mean... And even if we wouldnt need a reboot, the creativity of the fans is still limited too much, if you get what i mean! Like it is, no one can give us what we need and/or want: A lot people want a Series about the 4 Founders! A lot understand how lost in Adaptation all the books are and want all the Movies remade, maybe as a Cartoon, maybe not. And lastly, a lot of people love the idea of a ‚All generation at once’-Cartoon, as the AMV above shows. Isnt it epic? These 3 things should ALL come to fruition, in my opinion. Not to mention at least 1!! Currently, the franchise is limited too much... Fans should be allowed to make Animations about Hogwarts and all ist generations and Magical secrets. If you agree the creativity is restrained too harshly, tweet to Rowling! And also discuss! And yeah, i know Rowling gets Tweets about a whole other subject nowadays, but lets get away from that for a second, to help the Harry Potter Franchise, ok?!

We really don't know enough about Lily and Snape friendship in the last year before he called her a mudblood. Snape was in the moment in a fragile state of mind, which while not an excuse, has to be taken into consideration. And their relationship must have been strained - he was clearly getting closer to others in his house which Lily couldn't approve of. It wasn't certainly all roses and rainbows so the confrontation was inevitable. But also, I found Lily's reaction to Marauders' pretty disgusting bullying lacking. I rememeber when I was reading the scene from the fifth book, I found myself thinking that I would never let anyone treat my friend this way with me around.

They both had their flaws. However, Snape didn't delve into the Dark Arts just out of spite for James: he did it due to his shame of his Muggle father, much like Voldemort's childhood. He grew up hating Muggles and Muggle-borns, Lily being the only exception due to their personal history. Like Malfoy and Voldemort he had his own gang of future Death Eaters. James was also very conceited and arrogrant, bullied others and hexed them for fun, showed off to girls, etc. However, notice unlike adult Snape child James isn't HATED, but popular. He doesn't do this to everyone he meets and exceptionally not to anyone based on their blood purity, but out of irritation. He also changed his ways later on and turned around his life. Snape was also a snitch as a kid to be honest. James just held his end of the rivalry with Snape, but otherwise he wasn't a bad person. He quickly befriended Sirius Black, who had a family of Slytherins, and gave him a chance despite his family's dark reputation. He befriended Remus Lupin, not shunning him for being a werewolf and even breaking the law to be an Animagi to keep him comfortable. He even befriended Peter Pettigrew, who in any case unlike him wasn't popular, brave, rich, or etc. Unlike Snape, James saw the good in everyone, and although he acted spoiled, he never was pure blood supremacist.

I don't even care about the clickbait -- and it's pretty justified in the content of the video. But in a lot of ways I think Snape is more likely to be a parallel to Draco. Harry and Draco are James and Severus but in reverse. In this case, Draco is the one from a well-known, well-to-do family just like James (obviously Harry is, too, but he doesn't really operate with that mindset being raised by the Dursleys, of course) and he lets the prestige of that and having his own posse of friends get to his head, allowing him to act above everyone at school. Harry is the outsider like Severus in that he never feels like he belongs with others because of the stigma and burden of his name.

I prefer Snape being a parallel to Draco like you say, even though you definitely can also appreciate the parallels between him and Luna like he pointed out in the video. I actually prefer in this context that Luna is the difference between the generations and the reason the parallel's to the marauders in this generation were able to be the best version of themselves maybe even including to a certain extent Ginny and why Harry treated Draco in a way that he ended up being better than Snape

I don't think it is. I do think it's Luna and Severus. Both were the bullied outcasts but while Severus took the bullying to heart Luna never did. Severus hated his tormentors and started to imitate them while Luna just kept doing her own thing. The result being that at the end Luna's one friend Ginny had expanded to a large group while with Severus' malice he drove the one person away who he really cared about and he was left with token friends who he didn't care about.

While I agree that the ones who chose are the closest pairings, I think that you should consider the vastly different backgrounds they had. I mean just compare Luna and Snape's home life Luna has a loving father her mother died when she was young yes, but she still had a loving father. Snape however had an abusive father and even though he still had a mother, she was abused as well. So while Luna had a loving atmosphere as she was raised, Snape did not, not even close. I'm not sure if that made any sense, but hopefully it did makesome sense. lol

Exactly, he just had such a miserable existence it's no wonder he ended up the way he did. It's something echoed all too often in the real world. A child is bullied at school, abused at home and feels utterly powerless, so they join a gang of bigger badder bullies to feel safe. I was bullied horribly at school and I'm still dealing with the issues that caused me 17 years later, but at least I felt safe at home. Exactly, I was reading the comments to decide if I should write what you just did, thank you. Although I agree with the parallel, the way he presented it is very unfair to Snape, who was a victim of a lot of abuse in his childhood. Luna went through bullying too, but she had a support system, she had a loving father and eventually found a group of friends that accepted her. Snape, on the other hand, had no support whatsoever, he was abused both at home and at school and the ONLY friend he had was Lily, who he ended up losing. So in the end it was with the Death Eaters that he found something resembling of acceptance. The fair parallel between them is not "Luna is who Snape could have been if he just could let things go", like, really? Congrats on blaming the victim there. The fair parallel is "Luna is who Snape could have been if he had a better support system".

@@dandaramrs agreed. I mean, they do sort of nod to Snape's support system (or lack thereof) by mentioning his relationship with Lily and that Lily *tried* to provide the same kind of support system that Ginny gave Luna. But I've been the one-man support system for someone in an awful situation before and it's not sustainable. It isn't necessarily *fair* to say that the person receiving the admittedly inadequate one-man support "pushed them away", but that is sort of what caregiver burn out looks like from the outside. That could be why they phrased it the way they did. I have a lot of sympathy for Snape. I don't condone how he treats Harry, but it isn't surprising that he turned out so unbalanced.

I think, pretty obviously, it's supposed to be Draco, given that he's Harry's foil, just like Snape and James. I think the comparison is more between how Harry treats his own enemy vs. how James does. The comparisons between Luna and Snape are pretty thin, and I don't think hold up much other than both being bullied. But there are loads of kids in the school who were bullied, including Harry himself.

Little bit disappointed that this wasn't literal. Like, I was thinking you had some crazy convoluted theory about how the little girl named Luna was actually Snape in disguise the entire time and everything she ever said and did all tied into his secret endgame with Dumbledore and Voldemort. 🤣

Arthur Weasley is Aragog. Aragog was the leader of a large Acromantula colony composed of all of his sons and daughters. Arthur was the leader of his family composed of all of his sons and daughter. During his life, Aragog was accused of being Slytherin's Monster, while Arthur was accused of being a Muggle lover.

Another way snake and Luna reflect each other is that they have a lot of pride in who they are. However, Luna uses that pride to shrug bullying off, while Snape’s pride in his abilities and intellect is the reason he cannot deal with other people not acknowledging them

It would be interesting to know how Voldemort being at his peak influenced Hogwarts children during the marauder's time there. After all, hes in like prime rising mode while they are at school, yet we don't really hear about it.

I wholeheartedly agree with this, I would just add that in most situations, there was some kind of defining factor that had a lot of influence on how which character turned out. James and Harry: Their upbringing. I don't remember any indication of James's childhood being bad, meanwhile we know a *lot* of bad things about Harry's life with Dursleys. When they came to Hogwarts, both of them were widely accepted, and had a chance to be fairly popular (but because of the upbringing difference, only James acted on it). Ron and Sirius: Relationships inside their family. Even though Ron was constantly overshadowed by his brothers, they still seemed to get along, and Ron could rely on them when he needed to (e. g. Fred and George helping him save Harry from Dursleys in Chamber of Secrets). Meanwhile Sirius was completely alienated from his family for reasons ranging from his opinions to the sole fact of being a Gryffindor. Hermione and Remus: The length and details of their mistreatment. Hermione had rather normal life before coming to Hogwarts, and then could rely on her friends. She had people by her side for the vast majority of her struggles. Remus on the other hand became a werewolf before getting to Hogwarts, which probably led to him losing friends, and possibly worsened relationships with his family. When he came to Hogwarts, and had to align his studies with the moon cycle, and try to make friends in the meantime. Neville and Peter: Their acceptance by their friends. As it's said in the video, Neville's bravery was always either encouraged, or at least rewarded in retrospect. Peter was never encouraged to actually try for himslef, which taught him to be dependent on others. Luna and Snape: Once again, home life. Luna's father is shown as loving and accepting of her "weirdness", while Snape has a rather bad background. Even if Luna gets bullied, she can still rely on her father to be there for her. Snape did not have that option. I can't think about anything for Lily and Ginny though. Anyone feel free to correct me if I said anything wrong. This is not meant to attack the video in any way, just to mention the fact that characters' actions were relative to their situation.

Hey! Late reply here but I thought of one for Lily and Ginny! That being; their upbringings/families, much like the others. Ginny had many siblings, all of which were magical, and being the only girl she learned from a young age to speak up for herself and others. Lily was one of two girls, and the only magical one in her family. This alienated her from her family and magical peers, and because she was likely raised in a household that was much less chaotic and laid back than the Weasley's, she never needed to learn to speak up, and so her inaction allowed the faults of the others to fester further.

I've been rewatching / reading the books, and just noticed something interesting about Neville. In the book, Dobby gets Gillyweed for Harry, whereas in the movie, Neville does it. Later, Snape accuses Harry of stealing Gillyweed and Polyjuice components... the implication being that Neville perpetrated a heist against the person / thing he feared most!
