Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/c...
Colonel Thomas Thornton was a wealthy and somewhat flamboyant character in England in the late 18th and early 19th century. He commanded a militia unit with which he had some disagreement, and which mutinied against his comment at Roborough Camp in 1795. Some years later, he commissioned this quite unique firearm from Dupe & Company of London.
The gun is a single stock with two flintlock actions, two triggers, and two clusters of seven .30 caliber rifled barrels each. Each trigger fires a complete barrel cluster simultaneously. In addition to the firepower of this very remarkable weapon, he also had it finished in a truly magnificent fashion, including the fantastic line "PERDITION TO CONSPIRATORS" on ons of the barrel clusters - clearly he harbored some resentment towards his unruly militia subordinates even years later.
In addition, he had a second stock made to fit just one lock plate and barrel cluster, for when 14 barrels might be a bit of overkill. That stock is even more decorated that the first, with beautiful wooden relief carvings and the motto "A Verite Gagner", meaning something to the effect of "Truth From Victory".
This gun is part of the Liege arms museum's display of civilian arms, and I'd like to thank them for taking it out of their display so I could show it to you! If you are in Liege, stop in and see the museum:

Can confirm there is a "LA" before "VÉRITÉ", and an "A" at the end of "GAGNER", very shallow and not quite visible at first sight, making it "GAGNERA" which is the 3rd person singular future tense of the verb "gagner", "to win". So it literally means "the truth will win".

Oh it is even better than that. Seems the "mutiny", which I'm sure in Thornton's eyes it was, consisted of him being forced to resign his commission after facing a court-martial instigated by fellow officers. The reason for this, during a muster at Roborough Camp near Plymouth his men pulled him around in his carriage while cheering for him. It seems Thornton put this incident down to jealousy on the part of the officers and a personal vendetta the Commander in Chief, the Duke of York, had against him. Now as for his being a Francophile, during the 1 year peace between Britain and France in 1802 he personally presented expensive pistols to one Napoleon Bonaparte, and it was during this time he made his "sporting trip through France" that he wrote about. The Napoleonic Wars started the next year but even before that ended he had returned to France on another sporting trip and as soon as the war ended he moved to France.

A big danger of using this would be that there is no way to know if one of the barrels did not fire. Then, unless each barrel is checked individually with the ramrod to see if it is empty, it would be possible to double load. That would be a bad deal on the next shot.

You missed a letter on the second stock, it's barely visible, but at the very end there is an "A". You can see it in the reflection at the very beginning of 6:53 (frame by frame is advised). What is written in French on the second stock is "LA VERITE GAGNERA" which would translate to "TRUTH WILL PREVAIL". Maybe another reference to the mutiny and the expression of the officer's bitterness towards the shade this event might have cast on his reputation ? Hard to know without more detail on his life.

I can't help but point this out every time I come across it: 'Ye' is still pronounced as 'the', as early printing presses didn't often have the then used (in English) letter thorn (Þ, þ) the available letter Y was used in its place, to represent the sound 'th'. Funny that the 'Y' only stuck as the sound for certain things ('you' being a great example). With a slightly different history the guy could have been Yornton or Þornton.

@@EldarKinSlayer Wrong, there has always been a case for self defence in Common Law, which is a misunderstood term now in its own right . The Magistrates court act 1968 states 'Any person may use such force as in reasonabe in the prevention of crime, or making a lawful arrest'. The crime you would be preventing is the assult on yourself. Note the Any Person, there is no such thing as a Citizens Arrest in England, Wales or Northern Island. EU legislatio also clarified the matter to specific defence of oneself or others.
@oldwolf9403

@@peterv1318 And the sad part.. the Declaration of Rights of 1688 directly applied to the right to self-defense. See also: Blackstone's commentaries on the constitution and laws of England, book 1, chapter one, on the Absolute Rights of Individuals, so that if ever again the laws became insufficient restraint upon the ruling class, and the rights of British subjects were threatened, they had the authority to use force for their preservation. This (along with the subsequent Tolerance Acts and Habeas Corpus Act) were what led to the Declaration of Independence (following the Declaration of Right's indictment of King Charles and his sons) and the Revolutionary war. The "American" bill of rights was British in its origin, the rights, privileges, and immunities of British subjects, now long forgotten. It was transferred under right of conquest to the American people, as immunities to government action under Article 4, with far less limits than the British system, as they belonged to the people, not the government.
