"Double Deuce" 2-Bore Rifle: A Gunsmithing Spectacle

Forgotten Weapons

6 жыл бұрын

The largest sporting rifles ever actually used in the field as more than an exhibition were 4-bore stopping rifles, firing roughly 1" in diameter (25mm) projectiles. These were intended to not simply kill a dangerous animal, but to stop it immediately in a charge, which might require shooting through thick bone or horn protection. For that purpose, the 4-bore could have some value - assuming you had an assistant to carry it when danger was not imminent!
However, there have been a number of gunsmiths who have built 2-bore rifles, like this example named "Double Deuce" by its maker, Stolzer & Son of Kansas. At 44 pounds, this behemoth is definitely too heavy for practical use, but it sure is an impressively huge piece of work! It fires a 1.33" (33.8mm) ball weighing 3500gr (227g) at about 1250fps (380 m/s)...if you can hold it on target long enough to get an accurate shot.

The gun is 44 lbs and the two projectiles together are 1 lb, so conservation of momentum suggests that the gun, unrestrained, would move backwards at 1/44th the muzzle velocity if both barrels were fired, or 1200 fps / 44, about 18 mph. A 45 lb olympic plate will reach a speed of 18 mph if dropped from 10 feet. To emulate the experience of firing this gun, have a friend drop a 45 lb olympic plate on your shoulder from a ten foot ladder.

At work, someone grabbed a small safe from a cabinet I was working next to. It was on the top shelf, close to the ceiling and the person dropped it as it came off the shelf. Straight onto my shoulder, the muscle, not the bone fortunately. Less fortunate was that it was thick wall, with sharp corners and edges, and full of change. It must've weighed close to an Olympic plate. That was about 5 to 6 foot. I can't imagine what twice that height must be like, this hurt for days and days. I hope the gunsmith also makes prosthetic shoulders because you're going to need one after firing this gun.

The birds would jump up from the water and right into the blast of shot. They were used more for market hunting than sporting or sustenance use. I did read some time ago of current British regulation of punt guns, but since I have not kept track of the regulations I don't know if they are still used. This is a comedic firearm. “Among other weapons, I had an extraordinary rifle that carried a half-pound percussion shell-this instrument of torture to the hunter was not sufficiently heavy for the weight of the projectile; it only weighed twenty pounds: thus, with a charge of ten drachms [270 grains] of powder, behind a half-pound shell, the recoil was so terrific, that I spun around like a weathercock in a hurricane. I really dreaded my own rifle, although I had been accustomed to heavy charges of powder, and severe recoil for some years. None of my men could fire it, and it was looked upon with a species of awe, and it was named "Jenna-El-Mootfah" (Child of a Cannon) by the Arabs, which being far too long a name for practice, I christened it the "Baby;" and the scream of this "Baby" loaded with a half-pound shell was always fatal. It was far too severe, and I very seldom fired it, but it is a curious fact, that I never fired a shot with that rifle without bagging: the entire practice, during several years, was confined to about twenty shots. I was afraid to use it; but now and then it was absolutely necessary that it should be cleaned, after months of staying loaded. On such occasions my men had the gratification of firing it, and the explosion was always accompanied by two men falling on their backs (one having propped up the shooter), and the "Baby" flying some yards behind them. This rifle was made by Holland & Holland, of Bond Street, and I could highly recommend it for the Goliath of Gath, but not for the men of A.D. 1866.” - Sir Samuel White Baker

Yeah, correct me if I'm wrong, but; pretty sure that explosive projectiles (think mini artillery shells) below a certain size were collectively banned from military use BY multiple militaries back in the late 1700s, simply because exploding bullets are freaking brutal. This was when people were literally lining up to shoot at each other by the hundreds and pouring hot wax on their wounds. Still, if there's something chasing you that you'd need a half-pound explosive projectile to kill; I think permits and red tape would be the least of your problems... 😓

The fact that they measured the boar size by how many "shots" make up a pound makes sense. It would give an extremely easy way to know how much weight of ammo you're carrying or shipping.

Especially given that cannons and such used to be classified as 2-pounders, 6-pounders, 64-pounders, etc., and bore gauge is literally just the reciprocal of this ('cause, for stuff smaller than a 1-pounder, it's less clunky to say, say, "4-bore" than "one-quarter-pounder").

That's not a stopping rifle; it's a retreating rifle. If you shoot something with a stopping rifle, it stops. If you shoot something with a the Double Deuce, it starts moving the other direction!
