You guys have hit the nail on the head. Mitch Marner's problems in Toronto are largely self-inflicted. Terrible management starting with his agent and, apparently, his family. He can blame the fans and the media all he wants, but he consistently says and does the wrong thing EVERY opportunity he gets starting with his responses to the blowback he received after signing his post-ELC contract. This fan base is dying for a winner. We are extraordinarily loyal and supportive, but Mitch and his team have failed to read the crowd drastically to the point that Marner now epitomizes everything we see as "wrong" about this franchise even though we readily acknowledge his regular-season hockey talent. I wish him well with his next franchise.
@szahmad2416

Yeah...I think most people outside of Toronto would say what's wrong is Toronto's fan base and media. The arrogant presumptuousness of believing Toronto is "Canada's Team", and all the rest of it. Sheldon Keefe quoting other coaches congratulating him on getting out of Toronto "into the REAL NHL." The constant, overbearing pressure from fans and media (admittedly justified, especially given his large salary). And I get it; Toronto got screwed over the Ballard era, and has never turned up a real playoff performance since Mats Sundin left. But it does seem to be affecting player performance in a way that it doesn't in Florida, Vegas, Pittsburgh and Nashville. I feel Mitch would do great getting away from Toronto, to be honest; probably win a Cup or two like everyone else who's left Toronto.

It's difficult to really fix the team with the same core here. I think if you get rid of marner, you kinda have to strip it all down. Just because you get rid of one player, did that one player ruin the whole batch? Matthews doesn't really perform in the postseason either and if anything he's shown that marner plays a major role in his production. I know Matthews is considered the most talented leaf ever, but I wouldn't be surprised if the leafs win a cup without him on the roster. He just doesn't play to his size, doesn't stay healthy, continues to be a perimeter goal scorer, like Matthews is just as much of a problem as Mitch, so if you wanna move one let's just tear the whole thing down.

Jackie called it in advance that the Avalanche would be cup champions when they were a year ago and knows what she's talking about... she is like everybody else at this point when it comes to the Leafs. They are like a bad spouse that keeps saying sorry I'll be better next time and won't do that again - And then they proceed to do that again and again and again... Eventually even the most die hard and most optimistic of fans gets to a point where they just roll their eyes, walk away and tune you out. The goal was supposed to be a cup champion - Not the first, second, third rounds or even just making the finals - It was supposed to be a cup and they are not even close and are same old, same old.

What’s not talked enough about is there goaltending. The leafs lost 5-10 games last season solely based off of Samsonovs performance. If we can get better goaltending and guys like knies and McMann take another step up I feel like we can actually place better in our divisional standings which will help us in the playoffs.

Too much money tied up in 3 or 4 players. Exclude JT because he won't waive his NM clause. If they don't trade Marner he'll walk for nothing or they sign him to an extension. Yikes!!! Their best road forward is to trade one of the big 3 and build a TEAM.

To properly assess an NHL General Manager I like to ignore the top paid players on the team. All GM’s enter the business with an intuitive ability to spot and overpay star players. This does not separate any one particular GM as better or worse than his peers. I mean I could choose and sign Conner McDavid. I’d deserve no kudos for that. I strongly believe that to asses a GM we should look at the bottom 50% of the team as sorted by their pay. This would be, by my definition, one half of the team’s players. As an exercise do this sorting for every team in the league. Now we find ways to compare the quality of the “bums and duds team” for all 32 cities. The GM that can reliably select the best low paid players will be rated high in my books. An organization that has a process to continually monitor and compare these bums and duds will also get a high rating from me. They will reliably snag and sign the best of the lower pay echelon. The rest of the league may not know how to do this. Alternately, instead of the bottom half players perhaps we could draw the line at say, 4.25 million per year. In this way the core four is not a crucial.

I think more than that, they need a serious, solid defense and an outstanding goalie. Luckily, with Berube on board, those were the very first things he fixed...just as he did with St. Louis when they were at the bottom of the league in Jan. 2019, and he turned them into Stanley Cup winners that year. Offense really needs more defensive skills. The goals will come on their own if they clean up in their own zone and in the neutral zone.

The Leafs are known as regular season success and playoff failures. Going 20 years without a play off run the Leafs in the playoffs are Core 4 disappointments. By statistics playoff success outcomes should average at: Win a playoff round once every 4 years A playoff run every 8 years Appear in the Finals every 16 years Teams like the Jets (12 year old franchise) have at least gone on a playoff run within expectations. The Leafs - without a playoff run within 1) 50% of Matthews career & 2) zero out of 8 playoffs in failing to make the Eastern Conference Final - could easily not even win 2 second round games while Matthews is a Leaf in the next 8 years. 😀

Teams do rebuilds and not win the Cup. To be successful in the playoffs, the person doing the rebuild must have a good template. Dubas had a theory high scoring could overcome any shortcomings brought on by the focus on the forward group. It was not a view shared by the "old guard". Further corporate ownership just doesn't care as much about winning as private owners. This shows in how the hockey team functions. Marner isn't going to do anything for the Leafs except score a bunch of points and walk at the end of season. The fans will chase him away just like they did Sundin.

Simple fact is that they have no incentive to improve. The Leafs are the most profitable pro hockey franchise in history. They sell out every single game. Fans line up like sheep to pay hundreds per seat and $12 for a tall boy to watch a mediocre team. Every year it's, "This could be the year! Good things are on the horizon!", and every year, without exception, they fail. Personally, I gave up on Leafs & Co in 2018 and have never regretted it. Continued fan-dom at this point isn’t dedication. It's illness.

There is just no pleasing you media people and it's to no fault of any organization but your fault for very poor full swing reporting simply looking for views and clicks, you know all you gotta do is bash on the Leafs and your ratings sky rocket.. but that's media these days, agenda driven garbage!
