That's going to depend on the device and the case. Maximum length is 168 mm and it says compatible with phone cases with a thickness of 1 mm or less.

Bought one a few days ago. Cheap and awesome. Works great with my Fold 3. Playing 4:3 games is much better on this. Haven't tried mame upright shooters, but expecting they'll be great because my screen is pretty close to native 3:4.

Company's application is highly suspect, unclear why this company is being promoted, especially with the controller intended for your phone. Prudent reviewer / customer may want to look into the spy I mean permissions they would like.

The app is optional if you're worried for whatever reason. They make damn solid controllers.

​@scaryifliteral appreciate the response, but will just agree to disagree. The application is required to alter the button layout among other things. The company application is a Trojan which I wouldn't allow to touch personal data. Maybe that's why controller is cheaper?

The vast majority of my time using their controllers I haven't even had the app installed. When you install it, it asks for location and nearby devices. It's not like you're giving it your Google account or anything. Change the settings to how you want and then remove the app if you're scared. The controller will keep the settings. IMO, this is a bit overblown.
