This is a great concept. Seriously, this is an amazing philosophical/mental exercise. Taking away the style you already train in will hopefully make people think deeper about what they know/don't know about other styles. Fantastic work again!

I have done quite a few martial arts in my 35 years, so it is tough to choose some that I haven't done. My primaries are Judo, BJJ, TKD and Okinawan Kenpo, so I would probably do Kyokushin for striking, Shuai jiao for grappling and Silat for weapons.

I grew up practicing Kenpo, Escrima and Hung Gar Kung fu.. When people ask me what styles their kids should train, they almost always expect me to say the styles that I train and teach. However I always say: Judo, Boxing and Capoeira Capoeira in elementary school: For core strength, full body control, advanced coordination, great kicks and takedowns. As fighting in elementary school is most often never serious and doing capoeira will give a child the agility to evade, takedowns to passively deal with an attacker and kicks to keep an attacker away. Judo in intermediate school: For Throws, Sweeps and fundamental ground grappling skill, as many tussles and shoving matches happen in intermediate school. Boxing in highschool: To learn how to defend yourself in a fist fight. As many fist fights happen in highschool.

for an MMA style for self defense: Combat Sambo, Kajukenbo, & Hapkido. Best Kicks: Savate, Jeet Kune Do, & Japanese Kickboxing. Best Punches: Peek-a-Boo Boxing, & Panantukan(Filipino Boxing). Best Grappling: Sport Sambo(Sambo Wrestling), & Submission Wrestling. But personally if i can get back into martial arts I think learning American Kenpo might better for me for getting back into martial arts i did Tae Kwon Do(ATA) during my high school years 2006-2008. So start with American Kenpo then hopefully 3 years or more Combat Sambo be popularize by now so i can learn that too and then Eskrima/Kali/Arnis which would bend all together effective!

I’ve studied taekwondo for 20 years now for me my 3 would be 1. Tang Soo Do or combat Hopka as my base because I love striking. 2. Taekkyon to get a good mix of basic grappling and striking. 3. Some catch wrestling to give me some solid grappling. I was trying to avoid more well known martial arts for my list like BJJ and judo, it’s not a dis to them I think they’re very effective arts.

I think to build my ideal mix of martial arts I would start with with Dutch style kickboxing, which is a bit of a cheat cause it mixes elements of western boxing with Kyokushin karate and Muay Thai. I would go a bit more exotic with Panatukan, or Filipino dirty boxing, because it’s less for competition and more for street defense. Close quarters striking with punches, kicks, elbows, head butts and trapping limbs. And to balance out to complete my fighting toolbox I would want to train in Judo, because of the close proximity grappling with throws and slams. Also, as a person of Vietnamese ancestry I personally appreciate the acknowledgement of Vovinam

I'm glad you both chose Krav Maga as one of your 3 options. There's so much you wouldn't get from a sport or traditional martial art, if your goal is self defense. I've personally trained in Krav Maga Global since late 2015. Before then, I did Kickboxing, Goju Karate, Judo, and Taiho Jutsu. I found KMG to fill in the void I was looking for, but I would like to try other self defense systems. If I had to choose 3 new styles, it would be Urban Combatives, Senshido/Richard Dimitri. For my third pic, it would either be FMA or Sambo. FMA, so I can learn to use weapons or everyday objects, which most self defense don't go that far in depth. Sambo, because it's a well rounded grappling style, which most self defense lacks a lot of.

I went to junior and senior high school with a guy who trained in San Soo Kung Fu. I also went to school with a guy who was an American kenpo stylist. We were all part of a small clique of guy who were primarily martial artists. Both guys were Irish and both guy disliked each other. I basically the peace maker. What's funny, is that years later I read about the history of Ed Parker and Jimmy Woo. Some of it was said to have not been too positive. I wonder if they might have known the Parker-Woo connection? Back on topic. For my first or base art (striking), I'd chose either Okinawan karate (goju-ryu or shorin-ryu) or Kajukenbo. The latter being America's first mixed martial art. My second choice would be traditional Jujitsu or Hapkido because of their throwing or stand up joint manipulations. My third choice would be Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Kosen [rule set] Judo, for the the ground work.

@ArtofOneDojo Thank you. Oh, and my art that I would do for fun would be Ninjutsu. Cause deep down we all wanna be Batman.

Not sparring is ridiculous. You can get someone in a headlock and then choose NOT to actually rip the guy’s nose off. Lol… Give me a freaking break.

This exercise is a complete waste of time. Just pick Ameri-do-to for all of it, because that style combines the best elements of all martial arts there are with none of their flaws. Just be careful with that kill face in the street - self-defense has limits, you know!

Well that art is just a loaded weapon and too deadly for just the average person. But if you mix Ameridote with Rex Kwan Do, and Gun Kata....then it's hurticanes for everyone!

I wouldn’t change a thing about my training. Kyokushin karate (air), boxing (land) and judo (sea).

But that's not part of the game! What if Kyokushin, Boxing, and Judo didn't exist and you had to pick 3 new arts? What would they be?
