Hi Dennis, I have had my camvac for about 7 years now, purchased well before record power acquired the brand. I also split the hose to reduce the sound. I still added a steel dust deputy to it to extend the life of the filters. I still ended up adding another two extractors as on long runs I did find it dropping off. But a great extractor and I think we'll worth the investment. I really like the whisper box idea, as I added filters to the end but that reduced the exhaust flow rate, so I will have a go at making one. You also got me into the black mdf as well which creates a really lovely contrast. Great channel and love the China series, I have purchased quite a few products off the back of them.

Thanks for the introduction to CamVac, I can see where this is a great solution for small to medium sized shops, including my own. To have enough power to pull from a jointer or planer is very important without having a giant 7 foot tall two stage system.

Dennis, great video well done. As a particle technologist (day job) this subject really interests me. Traditional solutions have needed both a shop vac (for the sanders etc) and a chip extractor for the planer / thicknessers etc. The former is high pressure / low volume (HP/LV) and the latter is low pressure / high volume (LP/HV). I bought a Camvac 2 motor 386-4 several years to get around this. What people fail to realise is the HP/LV shop vacs will never be able to pick up the larger particles. I use a Festool M class for that and will continue to use it as I have it! This is where they work best with their 30mm approx hose. The LP/HV chip extracts suffered terribly when you put a smaller diameter hose on them (often down to less than 10% capability). Even a moderate length of 100mm flex hose seriously degrades the flowrate (velocity) through the system. Chip extractors are really aimed at short length of smooth bore high diameter pipes. Even 100mm is 'small', think 150mm as what you should use though most come with 100mm so are constrained from the outset. So volumes out of the chip extractors are regularly less than 50% of manufacturers figures with small lengths of large diameter pipes like 100mm on them. These Camvacs are decent flowrate at high pressure and therefore make a decent stab at everything. In real world situations they often perform much better than the large chip extractors as they do not loose flowrate due to the high driving pressure. If I was doing this again I would buy a 3 motor Camvac. At the moment I have my Festool and Canvac 386 2 motor though I must admit a 3 motor unit is on the horizon :). The idea of keeping to short flex hose and moving extractors around appeals. My cyclone and baffle units attached to my current units suffer low loss of performance due to the high driving pressure, something that cannot be said for chip extractors where losses can be massive. I find the advice on airflows needed on things like planer thicknesers and performance out of chip collectors to be poor and the influence of pipes can be massive and is often ignored in designs. The world is obsessed with flowrates (velocity) but they need to also consider the pressure. One cannot be considered without the other. The other recent complication is we used massive flowrate to pick the large shavings from 2 / 3 blade planer thicknesers. Spiral blade produce finger nail size particle which need a fraction of the velocity to pick up (read flowrate) but advice has not been updated to follow this change. Well done, great video.

I agree with you 100%. That is why I call it te “perfect” dust extractor for the average workshop. I think the camvac can handle this well. The reason is what you described. I will adress the technician part in another video. Thanks for your comment

"Particle technologist"? "High diameter"? "world obsessed with flowrates (velocity ) but they need to also consider the pressure?" Whatever the field "particle technologist' is, its doesn't cover dust collection, basic engineering or science. Dust collectors are designed to trade off some air pressure for air volume in order to capture dangerous airborne particles. You don't see them until your entire shop is covered with fine dust. The sub-micron particulates are responsible for pulmonary damage and other health concerns. They linger in the air for hours and become airborne again when disturbed. In addition to a dust collector, you should also have an air filter as well. The CamVac is nothing more than an overpriced shop vac posing as a dust collector. It's a 15 gallon drum combined with a cheap universal motor found in home appliances and various power tools. If your lungs don't fail on you, your hearing will. For the same price, you can buy a REAL 2HP RIKON dust collector and one or more Ridgid ShopVacs!

@@bobweiram6321 From my perspective Bob, I am no Shil, I am a nationally recognised expert in particle technology for the last 30 plus years in academia / industry for the UK (and internationally). I have supervised more than 50 PhDs in this general area of particles in fluids and have developed many filtration system for challenging environments. I am here as a hobby woodworker who bought a Camvac to learn about it's capabilities. i have been involved with respirable dusts for almost 40 years now. HI Dennis, great video and I think you're right these are probably the (almost) best option for the average workshop. I have the smaller 286 twin motor which services my CNC. Good on mentioning the filer life it's easily overlooked in the manual but critical to its performance. One thing you didn't mention in the video which is important is the duty cycle of the motors and I probably wouldn't recommend the extractor for Sanding because of that. That's the one task which is often continuous and where Mirka and Festool lead the way in terms of duty cycle and filtration of find dust. I chose the twin version of the extractor so I could cycle between the motors on my cnc when running longer jobs and have installed the blast gates you have. I have mine vent into 2 x 170m3/h activated carbon filters which further mitigate the noise but primarilly to remove the MDF smell and VOCs when cutting.

Mirka? Most unreliable while very overpriced equipment. Dont know anyone in the trade around me who didnt have problems with their equipment and that includes me (sanders), horrible customer care. And that seems to be an opinion on the internet too, on at least 2 continents. How good is the performance if machine/tool must be replaced after 1 or 2 months and it wasnt even in regular use. The best vacuum cleaner bar none imho is Starmix, ( they make vc's for mafell, metaboo etc...but 1400w, starmix is 1600w), it blows festool out of water in every category, especially performance while maintaining filtration and cleanliness. I am not a brand whore, hate the idea, but I did have few festool items incl the tower vc, I got rid of it after testing starmix, had to have it. Why? Got sick of cleaning festool every 17 seconds to have a bit of performance. Cost is way too high when it comes to bag and filter replacement and with festool it must be done rather too often, simple cleaning isnt enough. With starmix that isnt the case, and hepa filters can be washed. And to save on the bags, I mounted dust deputy on top of it. Still have 4 left from the original pack of 10 that I got with it 16 months ago. Well impressed how clean the work piece is after sanding or cutting, nothing left on it. I dont recommend brands often, but this one particular piece of equipment I would highly recommend.

@@bluewanderer9903 your experiences sound very similar to mine, in all regards. I no longer have any mirka Sanders (great ergonomics, shit quality...), and alot of pals in the trades are also going that way too. Got a solid mix of metabo, Bosch, festool, rupes and flex sanders/polishers now. Also switched out my festool vacs for the starmix equivalents, and think they're great. I'm still trying to work out which generic bags, though.
@bluewanderer9903
@bluewanderer9903 2 жыл бұрын
@@hokipokist yeah I got 1 metaboo sander now and that is all I need honestly. I also have one cheap air sander and I use that most of the time and that is why I couldnt understand why mirkas packed it up so quickly. I did very little light work and only occassionaly with them. As for the bags, I dont know I am not there yet wont be for another 5 or 6 months. But I would consider buying original starmix stuff considering the long use I get out of them. However, if you do find something please let me know, its good to have alternatives. I will report back if I find something.

@bluewanderer9903

@@Martin_Mudry it is, and unfortunately they all are, M class festool costs even more, mirka/flex/milwaukee even more than that etc. I had my mind set on starmix and I was getting it no matter what, I was prepared to pay the price at that time. Didnt have much choice anyway when it comes to price so I thought I may aswell go for the best. I suspect they all cost even more now in current climate. Nilfisk are another great brand and it was my second choice, I think they make mirka/flex/milwaukee ones and they have that same model too. But they have a huge rande of models and if you dont need this L/M/H class bull you are very likely to find something in their 25 - 30l range of filtered vacuum cleaners/extractors. Metabo from online german sites could be anothet option for some, esp around xmas time.

A CamVac Dust extractor for a room size scale, multi-tools is a great setup; many DIY Woodworkers are like myself that don't have a dedicated shop, my garage converts to a temporary woodshop for a project. The smaller dust extractors (Makita, Festool, etc) that are much more than a glorified shop vacuum. I use a Festool 48AC Dust Extractor that I connect "directly to one tool at a time": track saw, circular saws, sanders, hand planer, etc. They may be smaller, but still a dust extractor that works great! I look forward to larger shop in future, I'll defiantly look apply your suggestions of design & hardware.

Nice video Dennis. I have an older version of the CamVac that was purchased before they were taken over by Record Power. It works great on the table saw, bandsaw and planer but be careful with handheld tools as I have burnt out one of the motors when using it with my random orbital sander. I can only assume that the airflow through the sander was not enough to cool the motor.

Great video as always, Dennis! I would also like to see you doing a video on the piping. You have managed to become my KZbin guru on the subject of dust extraction, which is well deserved. I like that you always review how much dust a machine produces, and work on reducing it. Keep it up! Record Power does seem like a good solution for most, but when doing the math, the airflow is not very high. Your medium extractor is spec’d at 108 L/s, translating into 389 m3/h, while your Felder RL140 (?) manages 2500 m3/h. So I would be surprised if the RP could manage handling a planer over time.
@HookedonWood
@HookedonWood 2 жыл бұрын
You are right, but that is why I have also a big system. But for the average workshop, I think the one will do in most shop. And the big Felder is not suited for handling a small handheld tool. The small planer I Used will be no problem. It also have a very small airport. But I think it will handle a planer with 4 inch inlet very good. When you have a cabinet saw and not a hose to the blade inside. I think this record power run short. But for a small table saw, I think the record power Camvac does a better job than a 2 horse power stationair dust extractor. And it is so convenience from size and noise.

These vacs are a beast! Far out perform the Festool extractor. I have 4 in my shop and with the hose silencer’s in place it is very quiet. I have one for my drum sander and the noise of the drum sander is louder than the vac.

Hello Dennis, thanks for the great video. Your whispering box has inspired me to make something similar. I noticed that you installed the cloth filter over the paper bag filter (for the plastic filter cages around the motors). The instructions show the paper bag over the cloth filter. I think your way makes sense if we assume the paper bag provides the finest filtration. Edit: just noticed that later on in the video shows you installing paper bag over cloth bag

Yes, I had contact with Record power, and they told me that the paper bag was the finest filter, so I assumed this one should be last. Later I showed the CamVac I bought a few months ago and I placed it as instructed in the manual. So, according to Record power, the cotton bag should be inside. I asked them why, but I did not have a response yet. I will address it in a future video.

5:30 The vac is very and quite quiet. You can make it quieter by installing a short (one foot) section of 6" or 8" duct hose then returning to 4". This changes the frequency of the moving air and helps eliminate harmonic frequencies by slowing the air flow briefly. Static pressure and volume and I imagine the air temp play musical chairs because you know, Ideal gas law.

Great having you back Dennis. Do you plan on creating a box inclosure around the miter saw? I would really love to see more video on the dust pipe layout as well as on the new miter saw station behind you.
@HookedonWood
@HookedonWood 2 жыл бұрын
I had some great ideas about my miter saw to improve dust extraction. But I do not know if I will keep it. Since I have my slider table saw, it is much more convenient to use these for my cross cuts. I did not expect this before. So, I have to see if it is worth for me to invest time to try and develop this extra dust extraction for my miter saw. The other questions I will address in a new video I think.

I can't find a video on it, but if there is not one, it would be very interesting to see your extraction layout especially how you manage the reductions from 100mm to 63mm and then to the small bore machines and how and where you use blast gates. Thanks - for your videos - they are much appreciated

Everything looks great except those blast gates they get jammed up really easy after a bit they will be difficult to slide close or open all the way that is why I made those blast gates that I sent you the video of easy to maintain just a couple of screws that holds them together You look so happy to be in that shop

The only system in the US that is high-pressure and high-volume (like the one you tested) is the Onedia SuperCell and it costs $2,500. It is well reviewed but obviously pricey. Great video, as always.

it's also loud as heck and generates a tonne of heat - what i love about the camvac is that it's really adaptable - you could easily exhaust it in the warm months, you can control the sound by enclosing it, etc. something that is so much harder to do with large DCs, and when i asked oneida they strongly recommended against enclosing the unit to deal with noise.

Welcome back, Dennis! Another excellent video and an interesting solution to handle all your dust collection needs. It would be great to see more details on how you pieces together the complete system throughout your awesome new workshop. Also, I like how you carried the black MDF and plywood design into all your benches, cabinets, etc. Must be really satisfying to walk into your shop and see how everything integrates together.
