Dr . Wenning , as a Dr in exercise science you are therefore a man of science . The science should always be questioned for we can all get closer to the truth . With that being said I think you need to do a live debate with bromley !

💯 Found the close grip on accident around ~ 25 years ago after the wide grip had wrecked my shoulders for years. Built my way up to 500 over 20 years ago and hit it again recently. Wouldn't have lasted this long without the close(then closer grip). Spent 20 years straight just benching with finger on the smooth(moved my hands out a little in recent years). The additional weight I can do with a wider grip just ain't worth it.

Appreciate your content Matt. Always some wisdom to be found. I was wondering why some comments get deleted? Last time I checked someone was confronting you about your educational background I think. How he wrote it was to get some kind of reaction of you. But I don't think it was particularly hateful. In my opinion. As long as someone don't discrimante and write hurtful things it shouldn't be deleted. At least than we all can have a normal discussion and maybe get a different perspective.

Bro, I have followed you since I first tried out lifting in 2013 and I really hope you didnt actually buy a fake degree from a degree mill in thailand just for the clout. That would be silly. You have years and years of experience and accolades you can point to that mean more than that degree would to most lifters. Is this some misunderstanding?

I had switched to a wider grip because I achieved a deeper stretch in my pecs, and thus greater hypertrophy (I thought)... Am I just bro-sciencing? I am the strongest bencher in my (admittedly crossfit) gym, and often help people with their setup to achieve a more "optimal" bench. Many great results, but now I'm questioning myself. As always your videos are extremely helpful and eye-opening. I would love more insight about your optimizations for the bench press. Or let us know if you have already covered this in more detail!

There can be advantages to wider grips - but often the mileage is too severe long term

People see a “wider” hand placement on a 300lb lifter and don’t realize how wide they actually are

Excessive chinups and pullups (especially with added weight) or doing those AFTER deadlifts, are worse than bench press for your shoulders.
@WenningStrength18 күн бұрын
Hmmm not sure I’d agree w that
@2ndavenuesw48118 күн бұрын
@@WenningStrength just my personal experience. I've never aggravated my shoulder benching, only trying to do too many chinups. Injured my trap doing chinups after a deadlift, still causes headaches when I do rows after some time away from the gym.

@2ndavenuesw481 why specifically after deadlifting?
@2ndavenuesw48115 күн бұрын
@@rl00668 I think it's a function of the load on the joints and tendons, you pull on the shoulders and traps very hard in one direction, then immediately in the other direction. Whenever you put a lot of stress on something, it's going to be more vulnerable in the immediate aftermath.
@stevesedgwick578917 күн бұрын
Not sure if this technique works, as I can lift heavier for sure with a wider bar grip. For you this looked like a fairly narrow grip. I will test it with some friends at the gym. I have found in the past with people, it is a case of trial and error, to find the best width and varies for each person.

You don’t understand. If your bench lacks at that grip then more than likely you have underdeveloped triceps.

@@stevesedgwick5789 it’s for strength longevity keep using it and see your numbers go up over time and the shoulder pain become non existent if performed correctly. 🤦♂️ people think it’s some magic position. You will probably be weaker because your triceps suck.
