I don’t think I’ve seen this exact method anywhere, thanks! I saw the basted seam tip years ago on Sandra Betzina’s show, but I always struggle getting the overlap to work right. For some reason I don’t have trouble with invisible zippers, but you’re right, they’re not so trustworthy on a tight garment 😂

You're welcome! I also find being able to get into a dress with a center back lapped zipper is something I can juuust do up by myself, whereas the one ready-to-wear dress with an invisible zipper that I have, I definitely cannot without assistance, or a tool (which I don't have). 😂

I like to widen the zipper area seam allowance even more, to maybe 3/4 inch, to allow for fudging that zipper alignment.

Thank you! I’m new to sewing, and we just finished a mother-daughter skirt project that closed entirely with buttons. Let’s just say I’m SUPER motivated to learn zippers now 😅. In all seriousness, I’m feeling less intimidated (and thankful for your walking foot ideas, too).
@tashacouldmakethat9 ай бұрын
You're welcome! Ha ha, there's always a more annoying way to do things isn't there? In your case buttons vs. zipper. 🤣 I hope this will help your future projects!

Wow, my mind has been blown. I've done so many lapped zippers, but I'm never totally comfortable with them and never 100% satisfied with the result. Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks, Tasha! I'm SO excited to try out this technique on my current sewing project, which happens to be a pair of pants. The only question is whether I wait two days for my walking foot to come in the mail, or cave to temptation and do it now with a zipper foot! 😆
@tashacouldmakethat9 ай бұрын
Wait for the walking foot!! But seriously I'm sure it's fine if you don't. I know waiting is hard. 😂 If you don't wait, you may want to try starting at the bottom and working your way towards the waist instead. I hope this works out for you!!

@@tashacouldmakethat Fate decided for me and I ended up being way busy hosting family from out of town over the weekend to do any sewing. So I did my zipper today, with my new walking foot! 😄It came out PERFECTLY. By far and away, my neatest lapped zipper ever. Thank you so much, Tasha! ❤

Great tips, never thought about the benefits of using longer zip and cutting off top! Im getting back into sewing after some years. I always hated doing zippers but I really like your method and it's a real improvement from what I was taught years ago. I also love your pattern matching video, your method works like a charm! ❤

Thanks, glad to hear it! This was the first method that really clicked for me, for lapped zippers. I can't actually remember how I was doing them originally, and I felt it was fine, but not amazing. It's a great feeling to hit on something that just works for you!

@tashacouldmakethat9 ай бұрын
Thanks, glad to hear it! Perhaps someday on skirt vents, though I tend to prefer kick pleats over vents more often than not, when I do a straight skirt, so I'm more keyed into that method.

You're welcome! If by hand sewing you mean finishing it by prick stitching by hand vs. topstitching on the machine? A Closet Historian's lapped zipper tutorial (I linked it in the video description) has a good example of doing prick stitching.
