I have looked at older woodworking tools and thought this might be a way for me to get something beefier. The one thing videos like this doesn't fully illustrate is the time needed to restore them. Time is not a luxury i have with also having a mini me. I am looking forward to seeing part 2!

I'm bummed too! I really want to use it! I didn't think it would take this long for the machine shop at my school to reopen. Hopefully sometime in the Fall I may be able to get in there and machine the parts I need to complete it. Thanks for watching!

I am about to start a restoration of my Crescent P18 planer and found your information about cleaning and paint removal really helpful! Evaporust was already on my list of things to buy, but that clean and strip disc was pretty slick! I'll have to add that :) Thanks for the video!
@ScottWalshWoodworking3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like an awesome project! Clean and strip discs are great and highly effective without removing metal beneath the paint. They won't reach in every nook and cranny but they'll get you most of the way. Thanks for watching!

I was drawn to your channel by your recent cabinet build video...great video BTW. But I have a real passion for machine restoration and my own vintage Porter 12" jointer restoration project gave me some real empathy for what you are up against with your jointer restoration. I tried looking up your jointer but I was not able to find any comparable models. In fact, I couldn't even find that Kasto ever made a jointer. I did find one Kasto hacksaw image with a simiar looking base casting at a site called "metaalnieuws" out of the netherlands. Looking at the writing on the cutter head it says something like "Polaree(?)" which I also haven't heard of. You may have the only one in existence. It could be a one-off, a prototype, a war-era fabrication, or just a DIY frankenstein of sorts......which is going to make restoring it a bit difficult if not impossible. It may help if you could better document the parts and assembly.

@ScottWalshWoodworking3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Michael! I fully intend to machine the missing and broken parts. I need to make two knobs for the infeed and outfeed elevation mechanisms. I have one broken one to copy from, the other was missing. I need to make a shaft for it too, I have one good one and a broken one. I need to figure out how I'm going to make a guard for the cutter head as well. Cheers!

Lol on opening the paint can! I usually end up smacking it against the edge of my work bench in frustration. This method has its drawbacks, including sometimes damaging the spray gadget. Probably should just hand it to a four year old, probably would open it more easily than I. Great job on restoring it, I would not know where to start!

Next time....choose PVC pipe slightly oversized of your cutterhead, glue and cap the base, fill the pipe with evaporust, submerge your part, then cap and let sit overnight. This method uses less evaporust and prevents those annoying lines left over by the towels.

this is the answer - if it were me, I would paint the recessed background so the letters would remain black.

Very cool!! Maybe you could still paint the lettering red, just a more subtle shade!
@ScottWalshWoodworking4 жыл бұрын
I'm leaning towards silver at this point, a monochromatic jointer will be neat.
@Thurge3 жыл бұрын
I was thinking silver also. Tape the area around the logo and roll on silver so that only the surface of the letters get any paint. That'll make it pop! Also what was the name of the marketplace where you first encountered this beast? I want to find one that size to rebuild...

In most parts of Canada, Kijiji is more popular than Craigslist, but it's essentially the same type of classified ad service. The best deals go fast, so if you're looking for something, try and look every day. Also helps to have more generalized searches: simply 'jointer' will turn up all results, which will include those that are too lazy to give more detailed descriptions. In my experience, the ads without much effort by the seller tend to give better deals.
@Thurge3 жыл бұрын
@@ScottWalshWoodworking Craigslist isn't as exhaustive as Kijiji seems to be. Maybe there aren't enough woodworking types in my area? I guess I need to find a buddy in Canada who would hunt down a deal for me and help me acquire this tool. I suppose it will require a JOINT effort! LOL!
