Rice and Beans is the number 1 native dish of Belize, but a lot of people have trouble cooking it. I've consistently tried to find ways to make preparing this meal easier and more simple. When using a simple rice cooker, preparing this meal is simple as 1, 2 3 .

I bought a Pressure Cooker about a year ago, but it fell down and broke the Handle. I then got 2 Free Rice Cookers, a Aroma 10 Cup stainless Steal, and a Z0 Jirusai 10 Cup , and I learned to cook "Beans & Rice" from a Friend from Belieze in 1977, we worked (for free) at a Homeless Shelter in Oklahoma City, "The Jesus House" and Everybody Loved "Rice & Beans" we cooked it in a Huge Cooker (Had to cook for 50 Hungry Winos! ) I am 67 Years old and Love Brown Beans (pinto Beans) and 'Sweet Corn Bread" which my Grandmother called 'Mexican Corn Bread" she used 'Cream Corn" in the Corn Bread , and Jalepieno peppers, The Corn Bread was 'Moist and Juicy" inside, very 'Mouth Warming." Here in San Francisco ALL KINDS of Del Sur Americano Foods are available, Guatemalia, Mexico, Central America, South America, all is Here. Being Senior I get 'Meals on Wheels," but I Cannot Afford to eat on Cafes, you can not get a Meal less than 15 DllsUS. Even a Burrito is $9.00 but I have Stove and Convection Oven.....& pots and Pans. BTW I lived in Colonia Aleman, Tinuana, MX for a couple years and Get Too Fat.....food was Affordable at Restrants in TJ. There was a Chinese Place 2 Blocks away, for 35 Pesos a Chinese Take out ($4.00 DllsUS) I could eat for Supper and Breakfast next day. I always cooked Pinto Beans and Threw in Rice and Diced Potatoes after soaking overnight. Lots of Gringoes don't not Know to Soak the Beans.....Oy Vey! But with a Pressure Cooker one need not Soak. And all beans and Rice MUST BE "PICKED THROUGH" for Stones and Husks....I clean the Husks while Soaking they Rise to Top, but the Stones gotta be Eyeball & Fingers. If you ever Break a Teeth eating Sweet Yummy Brown Beans you learn to Enjoy Using the Finger and Eyeball to remove stones. LOL. Love your channel...a OLD MAN.

Great job on the presentation Barb, so true the amount of water is the key to getting soft fluffy rice n beans. I love my herbs, so I also add oregano, thyme, onion, bellpepper and rosemary to the mix. Coconut milk of course gives it the kick, but at time I substitute it for coconut oil ... and boy it's just as good.

at 6:04 you said, "the pot knows some way some how there is no water". Please allow me to explain. The pot has a thermostat, when ever it gets hotter than 212 degrees it will turn to warm mode. Water boils at 212 degrees, and when all water evaporates everything left in the pot, will start to get hotter, and then the thermostat in your pot will switch to warm.
@itssewxtra1713
@itssewxtra1713 8 жыл бұрын
+clonemagicfilms Actually the rice cooker is shut off by the weight of the food inside the cooker. That is the spring loaded button on the bottom. Even though the rice or in this case rice and beans absorb the water, it becomes less dense from the letting out of steam. When that cooking bowl lifts up the cooker turns off. That is why if you add more water the bowl becomes heavier again and will run on cook instead of warm. That may help you in the future as to how the machine works.
@kennethflorek8532
@kennethflorek8532 7 жыл бұрын
m. s. mary But you can put different amounts in the pot to start with and they will be a different weight, and a combination of different things (like not all rice, but some veggies) will be a different weight. Then if you put in too much weight, the heat will never turn down to warm, and if you put in too little weight the heat will never turn up to cook. Besides that, the pot would have to move up and down, and in my cooker it is already all the way down with nothing in the pot, and it sure is once the cover is clamped down. Spring-loading just gives the heating element a positive contact, I think.
@kennethflorek8532
@kennethflorek8532 7 жыл бұрын
twiggy 2142 Since, as I already mentioned, different amounts of food and water will weigh different amounts at the start, which makes switching down using the exact weight impossible, because the required finish weight is unknown; whatever the reason may be that your rice cooker switches into warm under the circumstances you mention, it doesn't make working by weight seem any less impossible. I can think up reasons why your rice cooker might do what it does, having nothing to do with weight, but I don't know for a fact they are the real reason. The pot in my rice cooker starts bottomed out, and it is still bottomed out when I open it at the finish. So how does the cooker detect the weight? The lid of my rice cooker also camps all the way down on the pot when it is closed, so there is no way the spring on the bottom can move the pot up or down. So how does the cooker detect the weight? But there is one more important thing. If you put in the appropriate proportions of water and rice, the water will all be absorbed by the rice at the finish, and the weight will be just about the same as it was at the start, minus some steam leakage, making it just about impossible to detect when it is done by using weight.

It's determined by the weight.
@TheDennisgrass
@TheDennisgrass 3 жыл бұрын
@@keshawearing7326 Maybe cheap-o Chinese made rice cookers work on the weight principal. HOWEVER, Japanese quality rice cookers use temperature based science..... which ensures that all of the water has been utilized in the cooking process, without scorcing! According to the Toshiba inventor of modern rice cookers (1955): "...., it is an application of water evaporation instead of a timer, which is a simple and rational idea that is typical of Japanese people. Works great if you pay attention to instructions. kzbin.infoUgkxviiltW7NlHbp_VL_bLbIkbLAvILVhnia For those that complain about "mushy" or "wet" rice I suspect they are using the included cup to measure rice (which is really only 3/4 cup) and then putting in water using a separate measuring cup that is a full cup. This results in too much water and you will get mushy or wet rice and think it is not done. Just use the included cup for both rice and water, or your own measuring cup for rice and water according to your package directions. It will come out fine. I've used mine for years for brown and white rice. If your machine is bubbling white froth out of the steam vent then it means you should have rinsed your brand of rice first to remove some of the starch. Sheesh. Makes me wonder how people can cook well enough to feed themselves.

Hey this looks great but then you said you gotta be careful because it could burn at the bottom. Wow that's a bummer. Do rice cookers tend to burn rice? If so, what's the point, rice takes 15-20 minutes on a stove in a pan with a lid and if you cook it in a little bit of butter or oil, you'll never burn rice!

Belizan? Woman let me tell you something - Panamanians and Belizans are really Jamaicans. Most of them came to those countries for the Panama Canal and other projects and never left. That's why you both cook like Jamaicans and have that accent similar to Jamaicans. And even the people are the same.Wonderful and loving.

Why are you using metal forks in your rice cooker that why came with plastic spoon!!!
@TheBarePantryShow
@TheBarePantryShow 8 жыл бұрын
+Norm A I use a serving fork to loosen the rice because as Belizeans we don't like rice grains that are clumped together. You'll never see me stirring rice with a spoon.

Yeah I just have a thing about shards of metal in my food but hey its your dish and it does look good
@TheBarePantryShow
@TheBarePantryShow 8 жыл бұрын
+Norm A we don't scrape the bottom of the pan nor the sides with the fork. For our daily job we work with plastics and we know how bad plastic is for you so I try to use glass, rubber or metal or paper whenever I can. I don't try to get on a soap box at my cooking channel though and force my beliefs down anyone's throat. Like you said everyone will do what they do in their own kitchen. No use trying to change that.
