This coach actually shows two types of slice serves. Unfortunately, he did not distinguish nor explain these two types: the first type he called carving when toss the ball near 2 o'clock (no pronation with carving), and the second type combining top spin with side spin when toss the ball near 1 o'clock (strong pronation with this type). Most atp pros only do second type.

Brilliant video as always. I love that you address the issue with the 3 o’clock thing. I agree that it has its use for building the slice serve from scratch but as you said, it’s more of a “glide serve” than a slice serve and the last thing you need the ball doing is *trying* to glide long/wide of the service box. Also that looks like Groth slamming a few serves past Simon there. Is that right?

What a great serve you have, Simon. Pleasure to watch. Can you make a video of tennis serve where you break down racket drop and that supinated position of arm before contact? Main source of power on serve is that full pronation which comes from whole arm, starting from shoulder, not just forearm or wrist. Please discuss this.

I love your channel. Thank you for posting all these great videos. Do you have a video or tips on what tactic to use when you play and suddenly became tired. I noticed in recreational matches players get tired at different times during the match, which makes them perform bad for a short time and often give another player time to gain back advantage. Kids have this dynamic too. After extreme tiredness the player will recuperate and suddenly start playing well again. More often, it will be too late as another player gained too much advantage. So what are the tips on playing during a few minutes of extreme tiredness?

Lots of insights in this video, thanks Simon. The tip you gave about moving the right shoulder into the ball, does this usually only work for flat/slice serves or do you use that technique also for the kick serve?

It can work for the kick serve if you stay side on and throw the shoulders upwards only, instead of upwards/forwards and rotating

Hey Simon are you pronating on this serve the exact same as a flat serve or no ?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficialАй бұрын
For the slice serve, you pronate slightly less prior to contact, as you want the racket more on edge, but after contact you can fully pronate as with the flat serve

Is there difference in how you hit it between Deuce and Add sides? I found that for me it is much easy to hit slice from Deuce side compared to Add for some reason. And also another question, if you want to hit Slice serve as your second serve as well, how do you increase consistency of this type of serve?

I've always taught the slice serve to be hit at 1 o'clock and have debated with many coaches about the 3 o'clock method. The dominant eye is now damaging players in many situations and openstanceitis is something I have had in my life and I actually made a video on it last summer - kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKHGopdrnrV2ras

He’s exposing himself in his lessons. Here’s a question to ask yourself: do you snap your wrist on the tennis serve or pronate? What do most pros do? Snap or pronate?
@stephenkromidas573 Жыл бұрын
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Pronate. Snapping the wrist leads to injuries. Pronation is produced by the forearm and shoulder. not the wrist. Even the great Sampras, who is often misquoted as having a great wrist snap at the top of the serve, still has his wrist in neutral position after he makes contact with the ball but his elbow is in a relaxed, bent arm position after a heavy forearm/shoulder rotation. 😉 Simon has taught us well!

Hey Simon, thank you for the lesson. Question: it is well known that you should pronate on all servers. It seems like this slice technique doesn't have pronation at all or you do not mention it?
@anantsinghdhaliwal45959 ай бұрын
no it does have pronation just not full pronation. if you are using a continental grip , the pronation should happen automatically to some extent. its just that you dont hit the ball with an open face(or half proination at contact) like in flat but hit the ball with a slightly closed faced ( quarter to half at contact) .

To keep the racket sideways on impact, does that mean you don't pronate when hitting a slice serve?
@KennethDorado Жыл бұрын
You're actually pronating later in the motion than you are with a flat serve.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Жыл бұрын
You pronate on all serves if using a continental grip. On a slice serve, you still pronate prior to contact, slightly less than the flat serve, then pronate fully after contact. I cover supination and pronation in this lesson: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGqcaYJta5mlgbc
@CH-yp5by10 ай бұрын
If you have shoulder issues its imperative you do not have a ball toss at 1 o 'clock as the impact on the ball is too much for the shoulder and too far away form the body. Its best to learn at 12 O'clcok and just change the angle at contact and lean how to do it, you have more power as the ball is in line with your body
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial10 ай бұрын
If you have shoulder issues, probably best to not be working on your serve before you rehab and fix the shoulder injury. Just a thought 🤣
@andrewcampbell29038 ай бұрын
Sir , your slice appears to have topspin on it as well , judging by the high bounce off the court and the distance that the ball carries .
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial8 ай бұрын
The bounce and carry doesn’t necessarily mean topspin, but indicates pace of shot. A flat serve can bounce very high and still rise as it hits a deep backdrop, that doesn’t mean it had topspin on it

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficialI like Solinco's Hyper G because I can swing more freely and keep the ball in play with its great spin and low power, but I don't like it for its lack of feel on the ball. My favorite so far has been Solinco's Confidential. It has much better feel/ball pocketing on the ball. It has slightly less spin and slightly more power. With those characteristics I am better able to direct the ball and put it deeper in the court with the same strokes that I would use with Hyper G.
