I have a basically new world that I have been making a very slow-paced KZbin series on. I’ve explored just a few chunks so it is basically a totally new world. I think this is fun because I can have a head start while still experiencing everything new in the proper way.

I won't spoil, so I'll say that besides being informative, it was fun and wholesome, I was smiling like a fool at some point. Thanks a lot! If I may add small tips for first day: if there's flowers, 3 of the small or 2 of the taller ones (of same kind) can help you to craft a bed, if you found sheep of different colors. Turn the flowers into dye, dye the pieces of wool, and you're ready to go!

That biome you found with all the iron and coal exposed is called a Stoney Peak. It's identified by the streak of calcite running through it. Great for emerald too. 😁

You can always just skip the wood axe and dig down 3 or 4 blocks and find stone for all the stone tools

Yep, that was a surprise. And a great strategy to balance your different available playing time, by letting Blujay have a head start and you get to catch up to him instead of having to slow down or leave him behind.

Slabs aren't the best smelting source place logs at the top and 2 planks at the bottom then let it smelt then after that you get charcoal place 1 charcoal then place 8 logs at the top and now you have a stack of fuel and when you get to 1 charcoal do it again.

I think sacrificing some logs to make charcoal is the better route to go rather than using slabs as a fuel source. Clearly there were a bunch of trees around so its not like wood was hard to come by.

It's not about being hard to come by, but more of what is most efficient. 1 log will smelt 1.5 items, if you use 2 logs to smelt 3 logs into 3 pieces of charcoal, you use a total of 5 logs, to then be able to smelt 24 items. If you take those same 5 logs, and craft those into 20 planks, and then craft those into 40 slabs, which will smelt 1.5 items per slab, you can smelt 60 items with those slabs, which is 2.5x more efficient. That means less time chopping down logs to waste, and instead if you really wanted, you could smelt those extra logs into charcoal for torches if you wanted.

Besides, it's not a "waste" of logs to turn it into easy charcoal when there are plenty of trees around seeing as how you can still use leftover charcoal for torches.
