Totally agree with your Buffy take; the character was someone who had insane levels of power but the drama came from how she handled that because it wasn't easy most of the time, she had to sacrifice relationships and various other opportunities as she was bestowed with this responsibility.

In the live action Mulan she did what she did because no man's gonna tell her what to do and they can't see how great and awesome she is because men are toxic bigots...In the Animation she did what she did for her love and honor of her father, family and ancestors. she knew nothing about the army or fighting or interacting with men...she struggles and learns and overcomes...she becomes the hero not because she wanted to be, but because she needed to be...The Captain falls in love with her because she proved she was worth that love...not because she was a bad ass girl boss.

Forgive me for the Russian novel length comment, Wicked. But, it's important for a character, male or female to have flaws because it creates conflict. As Sun Tzu said in The Art of War, "Without conflict there can be no growth." That doesn't necessarily mean physical conflict, it can be emotional, psychological, etc. It drives the story, it gives the character a reason to do what they do in the story. Take Rey for example, everyone loves her, and she's just perfect at everything without even trying. That doesn't make her compelling, it makes her boring. Also it makes you wonder, why the hell are you doing this? Why did she join the Resistance? *shrugs* Why does she want to become a Jedi? *shrugs* The odd thing about Rey is that you don't understand what motivates her, and as a result she just seems to be along for the ride, instead of the protagonist. Granted I haven't seen any of the sequel films in years, so I may be forgetting things, but yeah, that's just my 2 cents. And if you read all this I'll give you, ahh, umm...best I can do is about tree fiddy.
