You're the best expert on American English pronunciation I've ever met on video. I can tell you this because I was trained in English pronunciation, flow, rhythm and the like by a native speaker of English who sounded very smoothly, speaking very smoothly. He became my role model. And you have become a role model for many people as well. Thnks so much for your super remarkable work. Keep it up and God bless you in these troublesome tomes

Thanks Julie for this informative video. Personally, I have been using these reductions for a long time, but now I understand much better why is done and how is done. I always find your videos highly enlightening because there is always something new to learn about English. Thank you again, you’re the best instructor ever!!!

Could I drop the th sound of the words this and that too? E.g. Is that= izat or done this= donis
@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rafael - This is another great question! The explanation is a little too long for me to explain in a comment, so if you come to my next live group class (called Julie's Conversation Club), I could answer your question in real-time! Here's more info: courses.sandiegovoiceandaccent.com/courses/julies-conversation-club. Let me know if you have any questions - hope to see you there! :)

hello, can any one explain me whats going on with "the" in the example "will you meet us at the restaraunt"? Sounds like "... us at restaraunt", and its very usual when I don't hear "the" in American speech
@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent Жыл бұрын
Hi Vadim - Thanks for your question! This is an example of another reduction that happens in fast speech. The word "the" is there, but it's reduced quite a bit! :)
@vadimdev3926 Жыл бұрын
@@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent thanks for your response. Is it like "wille meet us at uh restaraunt"? There is no any "th" sounds, there is 'uh' instead, right?
@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent Жыл бұрын
@@vadimdev3926 In your example above, the word "uh" sounds like the word "a," not the word "the." The "th" part of "the" needs to be in the pronunciation - it just happens very quickly, and the tongue tip remains inside the mouth (it hits the back of the teeth).
@vadimdev3926 Жыл бұрын

So in the sentence "Will he meet us at the restaurant" you reduce h in he?
@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent8 ай бұрын
Hi Margarita - Thanks for your question! :) Yes, you can reduce "he" in this sentence and pronounce it like "ee" (drop the "h"). I hope this helps!

Are you saying tooGum when you say took him?
@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent2 жыл бұрын
Hi Q X - Thanks for your question :) I'm saying "too kum." The /k/ consonant is less aspirated in this phrase because it is at the beginning of an unstressed syllable. But I'm definitely pronouncing a /k/ consonant, not a /g/ :) Thanks again for asking!

I wonder how word "our" is reduced in connected speech?
@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent6 ай бұрын
Hi tr3buh - Hmmm, before I give you the answer, what is your best guess? Listen for "our" in this video - I'm sure I say it - or in another video, and see if you can hear the reduction when you play it in slow motion :)
@tr3buh6 ай бұрын
@@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent my guess it's "ər" or "ʌr", I'm not perfectly sure because it is spoken soo fast :)
@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent6 ай бұрын
@@tr3buh Great guesses! "Our" usually reduces to /ɑɹ/, but it can reduce even further to just /ɚ/.
