Very nice demo, thank you! What a creative way to highlight small stones and make them sparkle. You seem to be wasting a lot of wire though, I'd keep the wire shorter to start with. I'm thinking if you wrap like a bonbon with a bail on both ends, you can attach them easily for wire beaded necklace. It would add some sparkle to a beaded necklace with copper chain and jump rings and even daisy caps on beads.😍

Hi Wejdan! For this small of a stone, I would use the dead soft wire, which is what I'm using in the video. You could use dead soft for stones up to 8mm even. I only use dead soft wires in all of my work. I hope that helps!

I LOVE this! I make lil tiny, and big, resin gems and cabs and I have been struggling with ways to incorporate a way to be able to attach them onto a chain or something. I've put a tiny loop on an eye pin and cut it so I could stick it into the resin as I cure it as well as free formed wire bezels with a loop and filled with resin. Well this will help my alot. This is SO CUTE! I'm always trying to think of simple designs for mini pendants and I can't wait to try this one. One question - would you suggest hammering any part of the wire during the process so that it's extra secure? Or maybe adding some half round to connect the wires? I know 18g is pretty sturdy but I'm always worried about stones falling out over time haha. Thank you so much for the tutorial! :)

Hi Briana, these are great questions... the stones I'm showing are very small so the 18g wire is sturdy enough and if you have a deep stone, then you could always do one more coil than I show in the tutorial... if you get the wire over the shoulders of the stone, it will stay in. If you are worried, you can certainly tie them together either by weaving or by half round, but if you intend this then make sure to make the coil a bit looser so you have room for the extra wires. I hope that helps! I can't wait to hear about what you do! If you use a larger stone, then you could consider stepping up to 16g and again, maybe doing 4 coils plus a spiral onto the stone to hold it in... and also a bit of weave if you're going a lot larger. This wrap is intended for super small stones, with no weight, so the wire, turning that tightly will harden enough and should be secure. Have fun! I used a similar design all the time for small stones and I haven't lost any yet ( and I am tough on my jewelry lol). When I'm really concerned about stability I use square wire, I find it's a little more sturdy plus the corners give it some grab.

My only question/concern would be the coils snagging on something and being pulled apart...or getting snagged on hair, but that's just a jewelry thing.

It's a valid quesion/concern when it comes to wire wrapped jewelry. Making this particular wrap, using these very small stones, using the wire at a larger gauge and then making such tight bends coiling around the stone actually hardens the wire quite a bit. If you work the ends right, there will not be much if any snagging. I've been selling wire wrapped jewelry for over 15 years, world wide and am happy to report that I've had zero returns for wire breakage, stones falling out or snagging issues. Snagging on wire jewelry can be a concern for some but doesn't have to be if you build with the intent for your jewelry not to snag. I hope that helps you. Thanks for your comments.

Great tutorial! I love how the wire shape forms a treble clef :) 🎼 If I want to use sterling silver instead of copper do you recommend using a different gauge or hardness than what you showed here? I have several 5-8mm stones I want to wrap.

Thanks for your comment Andrew! For 5 to 8mm stones, I like to use 18g wire. Since they are small, I also prefer using Dead soft wire because it will shape elegantly but still large enough that the stone should capture just fine. If you feel you need to secure it more, then perhaps weave a few stitches into the sides around the stone, but I haven't needed that for stones up to 8mm at 18g. The treble clef is a great idea! :) Have fun.

Great input, Star, you're right 'however'... if you read the instruction for material, you'd see that best recommendations are for tiny cabs and at least 20g wire... the weight of the cabs vs the gauge and tensile strength of the wire, plus compression work hardening the wire, would actually make this wrap quite secure. I've sold them all over the world for the past 17 years without a return or an issue, so you're correct! Knowing your material as well as good craftsmanship does make a difference, doesn't it? You could probably use the technique to some degree, but it would be hard to say without seeing your stone. For this tutorial, I show it on a calibrated, small round or oval cabochon.
