If you compare his physical attributes (power, speed, etc.) of Wimby 2007 final to Wimby 2008/09 finals, or from USO 2007 final, to USO 2008/09 finals, you can easily notice how much power he had lost in his strokes and isn't moving as fluid or fast as he was during 2007.

It's crazy. Including Federers first Grand Slam Win, there have been 74 of the big Tournaments. Just thinking that the Big Three Nadal, Federer and Djokovic won 61 from those 74 is just so unreal. Such a Dominance. Overall there have only been 11 different Winners since Wimbledon 2003. I don't think we will ever see something comparable in Tennis.

Its crazy how much someones form can change at the top level. You could tell djokovic had what it takes to win but it was the small things in his form ans serve he was lacking then but has now. He's much more efficient and consistent with all aspects of his game more now than he was when he started the tour. This is coming from a federer fan i don't exactly "suuport" djokovic but you can admire his progression and dedication

The most fearful thing about this federer was he would not miss any chance to attack, all his forehand shots are going for a winner and this guy could produce them all day, no matter how much you defend the ball, the game wouldn't become any slower and you won't have a chance to recover, you would have to create an opening or push him back to win the point, he smashes all the lobs, kill almost all the balls at the net, a god like unpredictable serve.I guess that's why there were only Nadal and Davydenko who beat federer in the entire 2006, Such a monster Kudos to Novak, his game is so destructive here, he is competing so well, he had his chances in both the sets, I think he wasn't mentally strong back then. I think his 2011 version is the evolved version of this level. Nowadays he doesn't play even close to this level and relies on other player's mistakes, not a bad strategy but less entertaining lol. Anyways brilliant match.

I've been going back and watching these prior matches. This confirms that when Fed was 25 (his prime), Djoker could not beat him. Djoker was there with the skills and speed at 20. Remember that Fed had to beat Sampras at 19-20 age. So why can't Djoker do that?? Why did Djoker had to wait til Fed was about 30 to win? This to me clearly means Fed is GOAT. When skills are that close, the slight edge in age / agility is huge.

The H2H is a good example, Djokovic leads Fed but most of their matches (+60%) were played during or after Novak's prime (he also avoids Roger in 2017 but Roger didn't avoid Novak in 2013). And courts slowing down has also been a huge factor in Djokovic and Nadal's dominance for at least 7-8 years (2008-2016). I don't think either of them are better players than Federer (and honestly most people agree that the Swiss has the better technique out of all three), but the game became a lot more physical for several years leading to endless grinding favoring both successors. And I say this as a Nadal fan. Btw, I don't like Djokovic as a symbol, the guy is a douche, but if I actually believed he was more gifted than Roger I wouldn't have a problem admitting to it.

Federer in 2009 AO was awesome as well. Only struggled against an in-form Berdych before the final. He had perhaps his best (or 2nd best) performance ever against Delpo for example. It was just that Nadal was running as if mobsters were threatening to kill his family or sth. He was returning pretty much everything. His matches against Roger and even more against Verdasco showcased perhaps the best defense i have ever seen.

That's the typical fake narrative spreading by his haters. *Djokovic is an aggressive baseline player.* He likes to be in control and dictate play. Novak rely on the strength of his groundstrokes to move opponents around the court and aggressively goes for winners from the back of the court. It's crazy how at 2:03 whenever you saw prime Federer get fed a shot like that to his forehand, you basically just knew the point was over. His forehand was of another world. I also can't believe how much Djokovic choked in this match. He could have won this. He was up 6-5, 40-0 on his serve in the first set, choked, got broken, and lost in the tiebreak. In the 2nd set he was up 4-1, and lost that set in a tiebreak as well. The 3rd set he just lost clean, but this match could have easily had Djokovic up 2 sets to 0.

No, it's just a result of court speed. Courts have become so homogenous now that people forget how much difference that used to make and how much of a different game you needed to win on grass vs clay. Novak simply couldn't play the way he plays now due to how fast the courts were. This hurt Federer as time went on and helped Nadal and Novak. For example, no way Nadal wins a single Wimbledon if courts were kept as fast as they were in the 90s. Novak maybe not either. For further evidence of court speed making a difference, look at how an old near-retirement Federer in 2019 did against Novak at Wimbledon (almost beat him) and ATP Finals. The latter is a notoriously fast surface. Just watch highlights of that match vs this one, and it will look eerily similar how aggressive Federer can play and Novak doesn't have answers there.

Beautiful highlights, well done and thanks so much ❤! Roger looks sooo smooth. Really too smooth, almost coasting gear in this match just waiting for joker to choke which he does before putting him away in the 2nd set tiebreaker and 3rd set. Roger wasn’t as aggressive as usual. What stands out here is his speed and defense was as good if not better than the younger joker. Also, how much faster and livelier Roger’s serve was in his prime even with the smaller racquet, made the difference in this match and could tell Roger counts on it. That 2nd set tiebreaker, however, showed how defenseless anyone, even joker, is against peak Federer offense and weapons. A few things, while certain elements of Djokovics game has remained the same or improved, its stunning to see how much his served has changed, and its also stunning to see how much of a complete player he has become as compared to here where he is in essence an offensive baseliner. Second, I am glad that they introduced the shot clock for serves, because dang, Novak's 50000 ball bounces before serves is definitely a tactic to waste time. Also, the improvement in how Novak has become such a mental giant, he is impossible to break in the mind now

This match is the reason why Djokovic has beaten Federer many times in slams. He missed many opportunities in this match and learned from it. The same leads that Djokovic blew in this match, Federer would blow for many matches afterwards.

Federer was physically in peak form then and his muscle power probably at his own peak too. Believe it or not that decreases a lot past 30 with age in elite sports especially with Federer's power, aggressive and pin-pointed accuracy based game. Of course Djokovic improved by leaps and bounds too. On grass again Federer could get him, 2012 with whatever power he had left since grass is technically a faster surface. But then it was one-sided in slams from then on until 2019 (Federer lost but it was closer than any match). That was because Federer changed his racquet, and style and tactics. I know and believe that as beautiful as it looks, Federer's single-handed backhander is his Achilles heel. Most players learnt and exploited it a lot.

If anytrhing, age should be an advantage at crucial points since you have more experience. But Fed hasnt learnt his lessons, while Djokovic did here. Fed lost 24 matches having mps, compared to Djoko 3.

Times when Federer played really well, without making mistakes of all sorts, loosing to every possible major opponent. His career was probably short lived, he just went on and in playing, but after some point he was never that Federer anymore. Still my favourite player, love him.

Honestly, I think this is an "experience comes with time" moment. A few more years and Djokovic could resist the pressure of being, say, 4-1 or 6-5 (40-0) at an advantage and go on to take his advantage and win with it. It's not as easy as you might think.

Federer played amazing in this match…I think this version of Federer was probably his peak. Later in his career he had so many more weaknesses and flaws in his game. Also after losing many close matches to djokovic and Nadal, his mental game took a huge hit. Later on his career you could see Federer struggle mentally and exhibit so many moments of mental frailty. Here, he played cold blooded tennis and gave the middle finger to djokovic whenever djokovic had a moment to gain the upper hand in the match.

Djokovic was such a kid back then, crazy. He dominated the first and second set, yet was not capable of closing those sets mostly due to his mental weakness back then. Today it's the exact opposite. 2006 and 2007 (08 and 09 weren't bad, but Federer was starting to go down) were the last great years for Federer, after that Nadal and Djokovic were way too strong for him.

2017 was a great year for Federer (the great comeback at Australian Open and winning Wimbledon without losing a set). He dominated Nadal between 2017-2019. 2011 could have been a great year. 2012 had great Federer moments.

Slowing down started before Federer won his first slam. It actually started in 2000 but balls were lighter which were made heavier since late 2000s. Now if you want real fast court then AO is much faster than before and last year it was ultra fast
