Haven't been able to hit my driver since my brain surgery in 2018. Watched this video last night and hit about 20 out of 30 balls at the range straight as an arrow! You sir are the man! Earned a follower.

I've spent a lot of time watching KZbin golf videos and can truthfully say that this clip by Jim Roy is one of the best I've come across. I've been struggling with "coming over the top", and Jim's instruction about "quieting the body" and "giving room for the arms to swing" was a real eye-opener to me. Where many noted golf instructors are saying that you need to "fire the lower body first" and "move the hips", this instruction says to "quiet" the body and let the arms swing freely from the inside. I tried it, and it works! I'm now following all of Jim's KZbin videos, and I have found him to be a terrific teacher of the golf swing. Also, check out his instructional video on posture. It's a great one, too!

I agree. I’ve heard a lot of firing the lower body first, I’ve never heard of “quieting” to help with this. Will try soon

That right foot back drill is the greatest thing I have ever tried. Literally stopped coming over the top and hitting draws within one bag of balls. Thank you so much.
@jacobsommers69523 жыл бұрын
Try the head cover/towel under back armpit drill. Much better because it actually teaches you how to swing on balance. Also it wont mess up your aim like this back foot drill.
@tdunlap3 жыл бұрын
@@jacobsommers6952 that drill isnt bad but aim was not the focus. Once I got a feel for my drill, the whole point is to set up square and have the in to out path feel incorporated. I have even been using that as part of my pre-shot routine with great success.
@RCKT825 жыл бұрын
I've struggled with this for months. Unfortunately my instructor couldn't relay the same info you just did in your video. One day while at the range, I tried something new, which was allowing my wrists to move instead of my arms just being an extension of the club. As soon as you said "too much tension in your arms" I immediately related. Great videos!

A local pro in Atlanta taught me the exact the same things Jim mentioned. A lot people told me to forget about it. I think I’m gonna go back and work on these two drills. Since everyone else isn’t helping me with my over the top/ steep downswing lol. His method makes a lot of sense

@noneofmybusiness98953 жыл бұрын
At 0:51, you nailed what I do. I've always (but been unaware of) started the downswing with my upper body, causing my club to be steep, hands out away from the body, and an outside in swing path. You're video helped me discover this. I went to the range to fix this - it's definitely awkward because the right way is new, but man did I ever get a hold of a few with a seemingly effortless swing because it was my hips that were dragging my upper body through to contact. I went from 240 yd slices to hitting the range net about 80ft up the net at the 245 marker! Thanks for the video. Very much appreciated.
@alanbanks35872 ай бұрын
i have tried your method for a week now. i understand stand now why i slice, why i come over the top, why I can't quite my body, why i don't have a stright left wrist. why i come outside in with my swing. you sir are a answer to a prayer. thanks
@tomhedican52122 жыл бұрын
wow, this actually worked. I was almost ready to quit. watched this yesterday, went to the range, did both drills and never hit a bad shot. unreal. thank you.
@tomhedican52122 жыл бұрын
@Chad Williams yes, Chad, I put my left foot forward and it was almost in line with my right foot behind. just a little right of my left so I had some balance. it worked like a charm. hit everything straight. you have to do it enough to get the "feel" of using arms more but it worked. good luck!!! I had the same issue as you.

Same drill my golf coach gave me, the right foot even with left heel. However, I like that you added the other one about pausing at the top and starting with the arms. My coach didn't inform me of that and I did suspect that the first move on my down swing was causing the over the top swing. Your video confirms it - thanks.

This is great thank you. I struggle with this. One way I know I am coming over too much on a drive is when I burry the ball and it hits about 5 inches in front of the tee and bounces up. That is a sure sign to me that I came over on the down swing
@kevinminaldo54025 жыл бұрын
This is a very good video! I like the split screen with two different camera angles. This type of "over the top" kinda swing is my biggest issue for my driver.

I'm a left handed golfer & left handed hitter in baseball. I went to the range & tried some of this & was pleasantly surprised it worked! the only reason I say "surprised" is because it felt soooo weird. I had to tell my baseball brain to swing to hit the ball to left-center field & once i did that, i started hitting square in the clubface 9 out of 10 times. Thanks for the video PGZ guy!

Great video - have been struggling with over the top, the “stagger foot” drill helped fix that plus it reinforced shoulder/hip turn and foot weight shift - have incorporated the drill into my pre-shot routine. Thanks!!
@b2bbogey7355 жыл бұрын
I actually tried this. The 1st drill. What i discovered was that I folded the right arm correctly that made me swing more from the inside. A throwing action. I put down small exit mirror on the ground and balls in front the mirror so I watch myself swing from the above. It really helped me with sensation and feelings. Thanks for the tips! Great help.

JIM!!!! If I could kiss you I would! I don't comment on youtube videos but I had to on this to give credit where it is due. Played a couple of 18's at a resort last weekend and was beyond frustrated with my over the top causing large divots and slicing way right and short I hit a 110 and a 112 duffing my way around. This week I tried the staggered foot at the driving range with minimal swing speed and was instantly hitting it sweetly with great distances one after the other with all different irons! I'm playing this weekend and will let you know the result. Somebody give the guy a raise!

Moving the right foot back works for sure. I had a horrible slice as a begginer. Out golfing with my uncle on a dog leg left, he set me up like so. I hit the very first draw I ever hit, and a light bulb clicked as soon as I hit it. Still took time and practice to get it right, but that was definitely the beginning of the end of my slice.

i've been golfing a long time and from observing myself and others it seems almost instinctive for most people to swing out to in. so some times for me i'll allow for it and line up a little left and open the face a bit and it seems to work with a bit of fade but you have to watch out for the pull. it's a faily powerful shot but shoots up high.

Thanks for the tips. Sometimes on the first tee, or on a narrow fairway, I'll narrow my stance just slightly. It helps me turn better, gives me better balance, and keeps me from "jumping" on the downswing. I usually hit this drive dead straight! Looking forward to working on your other drills at the range.
