Performing a simple compression test on a jet ski.

This is how I perform a compression test on my jet ski. It gives an idea as to the condition of each cylinder and whether it needs to have new rings installed. In this particular video I found an issue with the #3 plug not firing.

Two questions. 1. Do have to shut off fuel for the pressure test? 2. Do you have to ground the spark plug wires for the pressure test?

Yes shut off fuel. Yes ground the plug wires

I have same ski. If I’m I have 75lbs for cylinder and 0 for two. Can I rebuild the top and bottom of engine to fix?

Yes, but I have built a few engines and it seems like you come up 200 dollars less than what an SBT engine with a warranty would cost every time. It ends up being a complete rebuild.

It doesnt matter they can be in or out.

It appears that all the boots are removed throughout, so how the heck does the engine start up and run full throttle during the test? Other tests I've seen, they just crank the starter but the engine doesn't start, which makes sense to me. How the heck can it start? Also, I assume you keep both of the other plugs in the cylinders you aren't testing, correct?

@PubDiji you dont need the engine to start to read compression. Just turn it over. You can have all the plugs out or just 1 plug out as you are testing each cylinder. I have had one start up on one cylinder before while doing this because I left the boot on so yeah pull all the boots.

Checking compression on a Yami XL1200 and a Seadoo SPX tomorrow. Does the fuel line need to be disabled or anything else, or is this straight forward just like you showed haha? Thanks!

To add to my comment, is it just the fuel selector that is being shut off (on/off/reserve)? Thanks again.

@hdemark5825 pull the plug and shut off fuel selector. Test the compression. You are supposed to pull WOT wide open throttle as you turn it over and ideally the engine is already warm. Not always able to have a running engine though. Pull all wires so you have no spark

@PubDiji you can have the plugs all out or in. Make sure your wires are pulled. No you dont want the engine to start. Shut off the fuel selector valve.
