From the book> And in that moment he experienced the greatest triumph of his life. And he was terrified. He was terrified because he could not enjoy one second of it. In that moment as he stepped out of the carriage into the bright sunlight of the parade grounds, clad in the perfume that made people love him, the perfume on which he had worked for two years, the perfume that he had thirsted to possess his whole life long... in that moment, as he saw and smelled how irresistible its effect was and how with lightning speed it spread and made captives of the people all around him - in that moment his whole disgust for humankind rose up again within him and completely soured his triumph, so that he felt not only no joy, but not even the least bit of satisfaction. What he had always longed for - that other people should love him - became at the moment of its achievement unbearable, because he did not love them himself, he hated them. And suddenly he knew that he had never found gratification in love, but always only in hatred - in hating and in being hated.

@@mmeme3630 The book is completely different in terms of how the character is portrayed, in the movie he is portrayed as some sort of weird charismatic little dude who is very awkward and a genius of smell that just wants to be loved. In the book he is said to be "evil" (though personally I don't see how he is evil, to me he is just above people entirely). It's very different. Definitely read the book! It's so fun! Miles above anything we've seen in terms of adaptations. The movie has some right ideas but it doesn't does any justice to the book at all! It's a nice movie, it's not a good perfume adaptation.

This is actually where I disagree with the movie versus the book. It is exactly as you say, but the book has a whole other spin on it that it's much more "grenouille-like". He does feel triumph and that is reflected very well in the movie; this actor is great. But what happens in the book is this: "Yes, he was Grenouille the Great! Now it had become manifest. It was he, just as in his narcissistic fantasies of old, but now in reality. And in that moment he experienced the greatest triumph of his life. And he was terrified. He was terrified because he could not enjoy one second of it. In that moment as he stepped out of the carriage into the bright sunlight of the parade grounds, clad in the perfume that made people love him, the perfume on which he had worked for two years... -- in that moment his whole disgust for humankind rose up again within him and completely soured his triumph, so that he felt not only no joy, but not even the least bit of satisfaction. What he had always longed for -- that other people should love him -- became at the moment of his achievement unbearable, because he did not love them himself, he hated them. And suddenly he knew that he had never found gratification in love, but always only in hatred -- in hating and in being hated." So in the book it's sort of the opposite of what the movies portraits. In the movie they really tried hard to portrait Grenouille as weird-but oddly charismatic person, someone to feel sorry for. But why? To me this was a big mistake. The fact that people loved the perfume, and not him, only really made the character hate humanity even more; because they are simplistic and fooled by a scent, unlike Grenouille who is, in his own eyes, a god (or an angel) who cannot be fooled by mere scents. Right now there's a new adaptation of the book as a tv show in Netflix. It fails as well. It sort of pains me that no one has really tried to capture the beauty and humor of the book. Anyway, you're totally right though. In the movie he realizes people only love the perfume and not him and that depresses him.

Story of a man who was never loved since the day he was born.. he didn't know what love is and what it feels like.. he comes across a fruit seller girl and falls in love with her at first sight , he follows her but she gets scared and tries to scream so he puts his hand on her mouth and she dies.. he didn't want to let go the feeling of love (fragrance is used as a symbol of love) that he never had before and he so obsessively wants to save it. Trying to discover how to preserve the essence of love he goes away from society and meditates in a cave till it occurs to him that the fruit seller girl didn't even see him she was blind to his love. He also realizes that what he thought was his love, in fact was his lust because he doesn't have the essence of love in him. He thinks that he can get that love from other women but what he gathers from other women isn't the essence of love, it's the essence of lust which intoxicates people and makes them lose their morals and virtues. Realizing that he can never love or be loved he just gives himself up to the people who said they loved him but who just wanted him to satisfy their lust.

Yep. The music has this sense of a euphoric moment of almost unbearbly overwhelming realisation, but with a sense of falseness. Everyone in the crowd embraces in passionate love, like ravers on ecstasy, but after it's all over they go back to being bitter and resentful of each other. One moment of pure love and affection can be the most glorious thing, but it never endures. All the good times come to an end and we're left alone with ourselves. At least that's the overall impression the scene and the music gives me ... Plus an awful realisation that you will never be capable of sincere emotion and this kind of orgiastic hedonism is the closest you'll ever be able to get to expressing and feeling "love".

You obviously should read the book. Jean baptiste didn't love the girl he only loved her smell because it was perfect. It was flaweless and in a stinky city like paris he has never smelled something like this before. He killed her because he wanted her smell. She wasn't imporant to him

That's the thing! I really enjoyed this adaptation and the performance of Ben Whishaw, however there's what I consider a major flaw about it if you compare it to the source material. It's an absolutely amazing book! Grenouille is just as the previous commenters said. He has no love for the girl, her body, much less her beauty. What he desired was the scent that enabled him to reign over humankind and be regarded as a God. People would love him, but he honestly hated them with all of the dark void that is his heart.
@manualcontrol75187 жыл бұрын
ok...so what explains his tears, the tears of joy? that he's finally made the lowly mortals "see" the beauty of the world that once only he could "see"?

I cried at the scene where he thinks and imagines about the girl he accidentally murdered. Usually in the movie, he keeps getting flashback and thoughts of that girl whose smell he was not able to forget and so he created a chaos and committ crimes. But this final moment here... This final scene here of his thinking about that same girl once again, but for a last time, has him 'cherishing her'. It's a moral IMO, that how he constantly wanted to "keep" the smell of every girl because he wanted to have the same smell always in his "possession". But moment his thoughts transformed from 'possession' to 'cherish/nurture', you see tears rolling down his eyes. The moment when he starts to imagine in this way, I had tears in my eyes because I felt so good of the fact that finally, this guy learnt his lesson. Sadly, he died but he learned. He submitted himself to the people of a place where he was born and got the amazing superhuman ability of smell.

I just finished watching the movie. I readed the book many years ago. If you're thinking about watching this movie, but you like reading, then read the book instead (or first). For two basic reasons: 1. Grenouille was an creepy ugly little man, people hated him and he hated people, he did not want to love by anybody. I remember he had a like humpback and was kind of deformed. In the movie he is actually a good looking guy. I understand they have to do that because it's not nice to have a disgusting main character in a movie but that helps to understand his personality. 2. The most important: the description of Grenouille's olfative experiences is absolutely fantastic in the book, Süskind's writing is superb. The movie tries to reproduce that with nice photography and wonderful music but fails to deliver, it's not good enough. Anyway I enjoyed the movie, it was a great adaptation overall. Along with the photography and music, the ambientation, the acting and the final scenes were excellent. But if you like reading, then the book is definitely for you.
