This is a great topic! So many just want to keep buying and buying with no thinking. Just over consumerism. And they also don’t describe feelings, memories or other different types of categories, associated with scents, like YOU do! 💕 and bringing in history! Love it! And you’re almost to 10,000!!!

About a year ago I made a rule for myself when it comes to buying fragrances that has really been a game-changer for me. If I try something at a store, I only buy it if I am moved to go back to the store two more times to try it again. I try many fragrances that I enjoy very much, but if I feel like moving on to the next one and can't be bothered to go back and spray it again, then I know it isn't special enough for me to own. In one of your previous videos Dacob, you said something that has stuck with me. You said, "...the perfumes that I choose to wear are always the ones that my secret personality loves the most." I think about those words when I am considering a new purchase. Only one fragrance this year has moved me to go back to the store multiple times, and that was for Dior's New Look. Thank you for your videos.

Dearest Dacob. We had to bury my beautiful, clever, kind 21 year old daughter only three weeks ago. It was as awful a time as you might imagine. When I got to view her body, hours before her funeral, I brought along my caboodle of makeup, hair things and of course, a perfume. I was not sure that the well meaning ladies at the funeral home would have made her look just as she liked. It turned out that she looked beautiful, but was only missing one thing. When she was a little girl, I used to wear Mandragore. "Mummy, you smell like oranges," she would say, as I hugged her before school. On days that she did not want to go to school, I would put it on her and on me, and tell her that it meant we were joined all day. I was with her. So naturally, I dabbed Mandragore on her beautiful wrists and temples, and then on mine, and I told her that we are together now. Thank you for seeing the beauty and meaning. xoxoxo Clare

what a sweet woman you are. i can imagine your daughter looking down upon you witnessing this beautiful moment where you join yourself with her a final time. i'm similar age to your daughter and i constantly think of the ways i would connect with my future children, fragrances always come to mind. i always feel my mother's essence everytime i smell coco mademoiselle, scent is the most unique, ritualistic avenue of memory. thank you for sharing a beautiful story. im so sorry for your loss, i hope you are managing well. peace and love.

I wore a "signature scent" from the time it was released in 1981 until it was discontinued when the designer was assassinated. His sister took over his design house...IFRA was all about "outlawing" oak moss as a finishing note...and it was discontinued. Sad day. I HAVE kept a small stash...but his sister's nose was "broken" and nothing she released was the same. Last summer, my daughter encouraged me to learn about new fragrances...and in November 2023, I did just that. My 11 year old granddaughter asked for perfumes for Christmas...and so we had a fragrance Christmas. I collected nearly 90 fragrances when I decided I needed to slow down on my consumption. I switched over to miniatures...but also started seeking out vintage fragrances. I got a bottle of Coco EDT in a "lot" and quite loved it. (I had always despised Chanel #5 because of the green aldehyde overdose.) Imagine my surprise! It was nearly full, so then I started trying other Chanel fragrances. I got a bottle of Coco Noir that was nearly full...and a small bottle of Coco Mademoiselle and Eau Premiere. What revelations! I also managed to get a bottle of Babycat which I adore!!! It has a pronounced incense note! Surprise! My original signature scent (Gianni Versace for Women) ALSO has a pronounced incense note!!! I'd always described it as having a "sexy baby powder" note. It was the incense!!! (And...I think the oak moss.) I knew that blood orange was a fragrance (and flavor) I loved, and since I already had experience in tracking down discontinued fragrances, I decided that I wanted to track down Miss Dior 2017. I was successful. I got 180 ml for a decent price. I had not enjoyed patchouli before that fragrance. Then...I realized that Porpora had an incense note, a patchouli note, along with several other notes I love, so I got that. I am happy...and content. I now have a "wish list" for "new to me" fragrances. Chanel, YSL, and Dior top the list, but not exclusively. I have vintage fragrances on there, as well. YES...absolutely keep going with this series!!!

Dacob, I really love and appreciate how you showcase each fragrance with care, and discuss the story behind a fragrance, as well as the symbolism, and mood or energy that a fragrance can evoke. I remember the first time I stumbled upon your channel, I was like, whoa! Dacob understands fragrance, and is truly sharing his knowledge with subscribers. Since I was a child, I loved fragrance! My mother wore Cristalle, Chanel, and though my mom passed two years ago, I can always smell Cristalle, and she is there. As a result, I have been a lifelong Chanel lover.I wore Magie Noire in the eighties, and loved the dry down on that fragrance..what a beast! Paris by YSL in the 80's too...the original! My bestie wore Coco, and one sniff of that takes me back to going out on the town with her in San Francisco. Thank you for so poignantly demonstrating how powerful and personal fragrance can be...and emotional! I am glad to know I am not the only one who feels this strongly about well made perfumes. Cheers Dacob!!! xoxo

Dacob, there are so many perfumes on my dresser which i've learned about from you, and am so grateful to know these perfumes now. They really ARE our friends. They really do help our imaginations fly, inspire us to create, and enjoy a day even when the day isn't so great! Thank you so much. What an incredible legacy you're creating with this channel. Dacob, as always you are so insightful and so helpful. It would be wonderful to have an entire series on perfume purchasing. It is so needed today as consumerism overwhelms all of our senses. The last time I purchased a perfume was 2019 because the selection options are too much. There’s too much to choose from and it becomes (silly, I know) stressful! 😥

Hi friend, I'm feeling extremely flattered by your quoting my message!😅🤪 Thanks a lot 😘😘😘I really like that we are several followers being on the same page, when It comes to over consuming. Influencers changed the way average people consider buying in general, and luxury in particular, this is definitely a topic!🤔 This new serie is absolutely great and super interesting in my opinion, because it opens up our minds to modern advertising though the world of social medias. Perfumes became another fast fashion thing, let's be honest, and it can get quite disturbing if you're really into scents!😵‍💫😵 I love that you never get tired of your collection and still cherish each of them, they absolutely deserve respect and love! Wishing you a wonderful week ❤❤❤❤

I’m only now getting myself perfumes and I noticed that unfortunately the perfume community is truly mostly about telling you about the new releases. “What to buy” is probably the most common on short format. I don’t blame influencers, but I truly would love if someone could just sit you down and say EXACTLY what you said on the video you mentioned. It’s hard to navigate scents without feeling them, but your video makes more sense to me and it’s something I can do in a store near me, even if I live in Brazil.

Thank you, D! I really appreciate the way of describing perfumes through stories. The most loved one by me is the one you created for Paris Paris (IYKYK 😅). I’d love to hear more stories like that which helps to understand not only for what kind of occasions a perfume is to use or what kind of people are associated with such and such perfume (douchbag/Savage), but the story the smell of a perfume tells as it develops from top to base notes (in case of Paris Paris the story ends when the person is walking home in the early morning in gray Paris for example). So, more stories, please 😂 And thank you again

Thanks Dacob for another informative perfume guide, great follow up the previous videos. The more I explore fragrances on youtube, the more I realise no one really goes beyond the 'physicality' of the scents, but you discuss your journey and experiences overtime with each perfume you have which brings so much more depth and value. Im glad ive found your channel early on and not fallen into the trap of buying a lot. Ive realised i get really fatigued after trying out 5+ perfumes at the department store. It really baffles me that there are videos out there telling people a beginner/ starter collection has 20+ fragrances... You've taught me to really slow down, get to know a perfume properly and letting it marinate for a while before coming to conclusions. I have a trio of full size bottles and a couple of samples in my collection atm, and im very content. It is really a long term relationship, especially when two spritz last me the whole day it would take years to finish a 100ml bottle.

Wonderful video! It is nice to know that others also have such a deep relationship with perfumes. I agree about holding onto perfumes when they bring up emotions that feel uncomfortable. For example, I loved Le Lion from first sniff, and I felt like I couldn't wear it. It was so extroverted and powerful. Recently, I have been reaching for it to help me feel empowered through some challenges.

As someone whose skin can totally change a fragrance (in a good or bad way), I’ve learned finding an individually fitting fragrance is truly an exercise in patience. But the effort is almost always rewarded 💖 Also, pondering about your comment regarding the last breath of a fragrance, have you ever tried Iris Poudre by Frederic Malle? It is uncanny how different it smells from warm to cool breath. Like a color changing matchbox car 💖. Thanks for the great video!

I love Michael Edwards, and his passion for what he does is infectious. But even he said (and I paraphrase), that the category/ profile assigned to a perfume is based on only part of its life, the dry down. There’s more a perfume story than its ending. Thank you for another cerebral and thoughtful video, Dacob. The principles you talked about here apply to most things that we consume, and sometimes collect or hoard - luxury and designer items, beauty products, clothing. I always look forward to videos like this. ❤

This is helpful for me because I’m practically addicted to buying perfume. I’ve been collecting for many years, but in the last few years and with going through some traumatic stuff, I seem to be buying perfume as a way to cope, heh 😅. But I know I need to calm down, I have nearly 400 bottles and I am constantly looking for a new one. I love almost all scent types which makes controlling myself even harder.

I’d love a series! You’re so poetic and just send out such beauty when you describe… well, beautiful things - you help me see and enjoy the beauty around me- how many times can I say “beauty”, lol - well, you move me to tears sometimes with your words - bringing up many emotions, but usually ending with joy - thank your for your channel and sharing your thoughts and artistry - I just started loving perfume … mistakes were made at the start … but now I’m slowing down to learn more about how I feel when I wear different kinds of scents - everyday is different it seems, so it’s quite a discovery 😊 -

The sense of smell is incredibly powerful and when you combine it with shopping addiction tendencies you can create large (and potentially unhealthy financially) collections. So these sorts of videos are important! It’s also aligned with your fashion ethos of careful consumption.

Love this series Dacob - as a newbie into perfumes, I find your content not overwhelming and I feel very connected with how I would want to enjoy my perfumes. Of course there are those limited edition bottles that are so collectables... but ultimately it's only collectible for me if I enjoy the scents themselves not just about the bottles... unless it's a freebie lol

I agree Dacob. All the new smells make me appreciate what I have even more. Baccarat Rouge 540 is one of those. It's a bit more tolerable than Arden Mediterranean, which to me smells like a mish mash of Flowerbomb, Light Blue, and black pepper, kind of yuck. Your description of New Look, aldehydes and incense. Is it similar to No.22? Btw, I love the celadon background, what a soothing color.

I love your outfit. That purple is gorgeous on you and the black camellia is perfect. The content is so good and in depth, always lots of feels and smarts dispensed, so I would watch even if you wore a burlap sack or raggedy bathrobe, but I love this ensemble on you so much that I had to mention it. I do want to visit Dior’s New Look. Frankincense and aldehydes from Dior is likely one I would like. Frankincense is one of my favorite essential oils. I crave it sometime just to sniff from the bottle. I talked to a lady with a super nose and her job is to put together aromas in public places (e.g., adding fragrance to an arena to calm the horses who are going to be shown at a horse show who are nervous from traveling or helping to make a realtor move properties with a scent that hits a chord for potential buyers). When I told her how I crave the scent of frankincense she asked me if I work with a lot of people and absorb their energies. I’m a therapist, so the answer is yes. She said frankincense clears the energy of others to help us release stored baggage and open us up again and that is likely why I crave it. She was a professional and I was blown away by this insight. I was not always a therapist and I did not always crave frankincense.

My sad perfume is chance edp by chanel, it’s not necessarily a sad perfume but it reminded me of the time on december when my family and i went to our grandparents house not by our car but by a bus, i could remember that my mom would woke me up at 3 in the morning and asked me to shower and eat my breakfast, the air was cold and i was on the verge of throwing up, drag myself from the bed and do what my mom told me to do, as everything is done my dad called a taxicab to pick us up to transfer us from our home to the bus station, strangely enough when the taxicab arrives and the driver greets us i can smell this awfully perfume -ee scent that is very potent and very intense that it made me even more nauseous, only God knows what the inside of the cab smelled like … cut back to 12 years later, my mom and dad already passed away, i was able to buy chanel fragrance and i smelled chance EDP and somehow it brought me strongly to this particular memory, not quite happy but not quite sad, comforting but also nauseating at the same time 😅, so yeah keep those fragrance that you hate, you might need them in time comes

Thank you ! I don’t believe in “ beginner perfumes “ I think that is bullshit. Only having access to certain perfumes as a kid made me kind of dislike perfumes . Telling someone they shouldn’t start with niche or high end , nobody should be buying a full bottle without trying it and falling in love anyhow … People have been using their noses their whole lives , I think it discredits the taste or palate of the individual to tell them to go start with a basic entry level thing. I think it’s especially a disservice to young men who might not get as involved in the process bc of societal norms … but then you have reviewers telling every guy to go buy Versace blue jeans , can we stop doing that 😅
