Wonderful. I love that you take just as much, if not more, care, thought and time talking about a perfume that costs 18 as you do about one that costs 300, proving it doesn't matter. A great perfume is great, no matter the cost. I love the connections you make here to the Mummy, and also remembering your recollections about Boris and all he went through for that film. It's extraordinary. I also LOVE that you have every frame of this film as still photos and recognize them as art. It's so moving, and poetic. Thank you, all the way back to 1932, and back.

Thank you for reviewing this. I love TABU, as my mother wore it when I was a kid. I love the bottle that is shaped like a cello (viola, violin...sometimes you find those). I also love the vintage ad that depicts a late 19th century man sweeping a lady into his arms, kissing her. You can feel the swish and rustle of her gown. ❤ I always keep a small spray bottle of either this or Chantilly in my bag. ❤ To me, this old fragrance is elegant.

Me and my two Tabu bottles were watching your video, Dacob :) - oh what a wonderful journey you took us on! It is like 360 degrees of ASMR, if i can express it this way - listening to your wonderful story while listening to Tabu scent, feeling the bottle glass(and playing with the plastic cap(made in US version) after you compared it to Egyptian headwear :)) in my hands, having all the wonderful visuals from your video and having it all tied in with history and art of movies and design, simply beautiful! Thank you for this experience, Dacob :)

I loved your suggestion which links Tabu to the 30’s Movie, it’s the power of the perfumes, make us dream through time and space ✨ I had the same experience with Arpege by Lanvin ( which I believe you might LOVE ) that I link to Sunset Boulevard movie by Blilly Wilder ❤ Un abbraccio 🤗

Thank you for honoring all types of perfumes. I haven't smelled the current version, but the vintage is a warm sweet oriental with an interesting citronella note. To me the animalic notes are more of a purr than a growl. Wonderful to know it is still in good shape.

The civet and oakmoss are not the issue with reformulating Tabu - nowadays we have very convincing civet replacements within a composition. Oakmoss was also not crucial to a lot of perfumes, fixative effect aside. (For example, from the 70s onwards, it was common in most chypres with some exceptions of course, to use a trace of oakmoss absolute with evernyl.) To maintain the character of this fragrance is thankfully still possible today, I would just imagine the perceptible quality has diminished, especially from the likely lower concentrations of floral oils and absolutes, but also the fact these are extracted in a different manner to the 1930s. Many of the impurities of products from that time added a different and often desirable quality to materials, including patchouli. Today, it is very difficult to imitate the patchouli of decades ago which has affected among other perfumes, like the Guerlain classics like Shalimar where we find some 4%. The timing of this video is rather coincidental for me, as I've just ordered a bottle of the Youth Dew bath oil, current formulation from the Estee Lauder website. Youth Dew can be said to have been inspired partly by Tabu, though it still stands as a highly original creation. I would recommend as part of your perfume archaeology journey to explore Fidji from Guy Laroche because knowing the vintage, the current formulation is fantastic.

Love this classic! And it’s so wonderful to see someone younger appreciate these classics! 💕 oddly I feel like they’re not listing some notes? I remember some spice!? But I’ve not smelled this since, around 1980? I was ten my granny had this one, so I need to pick up the newest formulation! Very curious! 👀 Loved hearing some of the Dana history! And how luxury doesn’t equal $$! Funny perfume journey story..being that my name was Heaven, my mom would buy me Heaven Scent every flipping year! I didn’t like it!! 😢😢 it gave me a horrible headache! But Tabu, I actually loved. Anything cinnamon or clove I’m in! Loved hearing about the history of this time as well as the movies! Another great review, Dacob 💕

This is interesting…when I tried Tabu in cool, dry (no humidity) weather, I smelled a heavy, musty perfume… i.e., only the base notes. It is usual for me to smell mostly base notes as soon as I apply a fragrance, which could be due to my body temperature (?). Today though, in 88F weather with humidity, I sprayed Tabu and I smelled a very different perfume…beautiful cinnamon & clove (not listed in the notes printed on the box) some rose, and incense (also not listed). This one is an enigma. Then, I rewatched your video and saw that you also got cinnamon and clove. And again Dacob, your review of this perfume, with all of the research and analysis you did, and the connections you made is what is really interesting (genius thought and such poetry).

I love Tabu. I have a couple of vintage bottles, but someone said that this most recent version was reformulated by Sophia Grosjman (!), which I can’t verify, but I do think it has been improved over prior reformulations. I bought this one that you’re featuring in the video at Walmart for $13 and change. And I think it’s really good.

Dacob, I’ve smelled Tabu on women before, many years ago…typically they had over-sprayed it. It could have also been a stronger formulation. I did not like it. After watching your fascinating review, I was very, very curious (as we perfume nerds are) to smell it from the bottle and on my skin. So, I went to a department store today and purchased a bottle. A spray on my wrist confirms my memories of it, however, I think if dosed right, this perfume could be good to wear when having a craving for something of this genre (Opium, Obsession, Coco, etc.). It’s definitely a unique scent with a nod to ancient times. Thanks.

When I saw this pop up I grabbed my older bottle (16074A) to join you.. My mom had a huge bottle(kind of looked like a gallon of fragrance..lol..My uncle brought it back from Japan after serving there in service..id say in the "40s"..it looked like a presentation bottle in a dept store..lol..........it was flilled w/fragrance not the display type bottle..In any case i just joined you to play w/this fragrance It truly smells exotic and a dry/aromatic i get alot of ylang ylang, civet/patch/ and spices..and that touch of narcissus increases the animalistic toudh..somehow i do get a bitter note that blankets the entire fragrance.

yes i can still "see" that old huge bottle of Tabu at the top of her perfume shelves in the bathroom and aside from that it brings back memories of the heavy black satin kimono brought back from Japan.. highly raised embroidered dragons and flowers and temples in rich colors..against the black..A-Mazing. Its in a cedar trunk in the basement..i really should pull it out and lucite frame it with a bamboo rod going thru the shoulders...ahh yes

People should not be called oriental. However things can be. Its not derogatory. Oriental rug. Re: fragrance it a genre. Its not negative. It has to do with a style or scent profile used. People are not things thus why its offensive to use it to call a person. Oriental rugs and fragrances are beautiful and often considered luxurious

I received my bottle of Tabu a few days ago and I love it! My bottle is different in that there is just a singular D instead of the interlocking D’s you showed on your fragrance cap.
