Oh WOW 😲 It's honestly been years since I've cared about BBC Sherlock at all, let alone watched any episode - I used to love it so much but after everything that's happened it just left a bitter taste in my mouth. I moved on and stopped thinking about it. Well, this notification just changed that 😄 I'm looking forward to watching more of your analysis and reminding myself of the show itself now. Nobody but you could have changed my mind like that 😅

Thank you for coming back, Rebekah, and sharing your views once more. It takes an enormous amount of bravery to be able to come back after all that's happened... I can't give up on them, I never will, but I needed a bit of fire to rekindle the passion 🔥 Thank you!

Really excellent work. Made me tear up a bit honestly, remembering how much I thought this was going to happen and how much it meant to me. I'd also like to add the Granada Holmes series with Jeremy Brett as Sherlock and David Burke/Edward Hardwicke as Watson that came out between 1984-1994. Jeremy Brett was a bisexual man, and it's very clear that he knew exactly what story was being told, to the point of John simply not getting married, but of course... nothing explicit. Because even in the 80s and 90s it couldn't have been.

@@TJLCExplained It's really good. After a few years cold turkey on all things Sherlock Holmes I gave it a watch and I found it... healing honestly. Even when I believed in BBC Sherlock's story, John and Sherlock's romance was so... heartbreaking. BBC Johnlock is a relationship where so much is unsaid and untold and both John and Sherlock suffer a lot for how much they love eachother silently. That's why it was going to feel so good when it got resolved. Granada Holmes is just... not that. Every single episode they're pretty much simpatico (at least in terms of what they mean to eachother). It's a much softer and drama free show. I got the sense that they had already spoken to eachother and were already in a relationship by the time the show started. Watching the show and seeing how healthy this was for the two of them and how effortlessly they lived their lives together made me realize a little more the problems with BBC Sherlock I had ignored at the time. BBC Sherlock will always been the first Sherlock story I loved with my whole heart, but honestly I'm happier with how Granada Holmes portrayed the dynamic.

Jeremy Brett’s Holmes is excellent and I agree he knows exactly what he’s playing and delivers so much with just an expression. I see BBC Sherlock & Watson as younger and we’re lucky enough to see the deeper journey they’ve taken to reach the older version of Holmes & Watson relationships portrayed in other adaptations. I believe once S5 ( and beyond) arrives there will be no doubt of the deep love and devotion they have for each other.

This actually made me shed a tear at the end. It’s a lovely piece of writing, and it all absolutely should have gone this way. I feel the writers really cheated and robbed everyone with how series 4 was done. The could have created the TV history they promised and hinted at for YEARS, but instead chose to back out at the last minute. What a shame. It could have been so beautiful and so meaningful. What a waste...I still love watching BBC Sherlock though, even though I know it ends in serious disappointment. It’s still a fantastic show, and no one will ever convince me Johnlock was a lie.

Lovely work, and very thought provoking. Not just about what the first three seasons of BBC Sherlock seemed to lead to (only to pivot away from), either. It encourages thinking about how / why classics are durable in time: they continue to respond to new questions, as the horizon around them changes

This was certainly bittersweet, as you put it. It's heartbreaking, but the consolation is knowing that the deeper mystery has been unveiled. We currently live in an era where it can and could be known as truth. And someday, some time, there will be a Sherlock, ready with his Watson, to fully and without remorse, open the door.

The most curious thing about watching the whole series after all these years is that it still can be read in that ambigous "is it a romance?...." manner, although s4 makes it seem like there's more of a brotherly love going on (sherlock having to choose between mycroft and John, John ending up in the same well as Victor) it's still... Not so straight. Tbh now I don't care as much about johnlock but more about sherlock's character development and if there was ever a s5 I'd only wish to see more of it, knowing all the new info on his back story
@CatLady-9327
@CatLady-9327 9 ай бұрын
If I may point out, i believe s4 John&Sherlock is primarily about friendship, not brotherhood (maybe metaphorically, but not in a sibling sense.). Even the relationship between Sherlock and his actual brother is not just about family, but also friendship. Sherlock had Victor, then John, Lestrade, Molly, Mrs H... Mycroft only had Sherlock. Sherlock is the closest thing he ever had to a friend. The relationships are paralleled, first by the family comment, then by Eurus referring to them both as Sherlock's friends and people he is close to, although Eurus makes the "friend or family" distinction when it comes fo actually choosing.

That was wonderful, thank you so much for sharing. I am a big supporter of queer readings of the original canon, and even though things didn't turn out as we had hoped, I am convinced that one day the true story will indeed be told. (But it is depressing that the closest we've gotten so far is a film from 1970, for crying out loud.) Also I'm actually about to rewatch TAB (the only episode they had at my local library, and I gave away my DVDs of the show about two years ago), I'm really nervous and this was the perfect thing to prepare me and ease me into it. Even though it made me tear up.
