She broke the game, beat America’s Sweetheart, and nearly became a two-time winner. For how much of Australia’s characters and gameplay aged poorly, Tina’s moves and subtle infiltration of Ogakor aged like a fine wine.

22:55 I saw a different interview Danni did (I think it was actually on rhap) and she further explained why she didn't want to tell producers all of her plans in confessional.. she said that sometimes she could tell, by the questions they would ask, what was going on in the game. They would ask things that would I guess be weirdly specific or whatever and she would put together who was up to what bc of it. So ofc she assumed others may do the same and so she stopped explaining all of her strategy in confessional. It's actually quite clever.

Danni's win is really impressive. She entered the merge down in the numbers, which in those days, was extremely bad news. But she managed to get to the end with only one vote against her, won 6-1 and won two clutch immunity challenges.

That's true, Smart move by Danni. I still didn't see her as an underrated winner though. You can see in WaW when she gets voted out 8-1, she wasn't a person people felt like they could work with at all. Danni got to the end but beat a crumbling and bridge burning Stephenie. I don't think Danni is terrible but I would say below average winner and not #2 on this list.

@@TheMurrmursonbottle The thing with how English speakers say many Asian names, they say them using the æ sound such as in the word "man", when they actually have to be said as "ʌ" as in the word "sun". Also for Filipino names that have more three syllables, a lot of the stress has to be at the third syllable (of course, exception applies at times). So in Erika's name, the stress is actually in Ca-su-PA-nan, not Ca-SU-pa-nan. It can be tricky because Filipino words (mostly based on the dialect Tagalog) put a lot of emphasis on stressing a certain part of a word as not doing so can potentially mean a different thing. For example, the word "tayo" means two different things. It can either mean "we" if the stress is on the first syllable or "stand" if the word is on the second syllable. It's a very funny language and can be really hard to learn for Westerners but it's actually a very expressive language, especially when you are surprised, happy or angry.

Love the video, I appreciate the attention to detail with things like showing the fruit opening up when talking about the game beneath the surface opening up and Jeff raising the flag when Tina says "let the games begin". I'm really glad you included winners like Tommy and Vecepia, who I think are drastically underrated. If you simulated Survivor say 100 times, I think both of them make it far most of the time and have a solid shot to win, especially Vecepia. It's really impressive that Tommy is the big muscular guy yet managed to lower his threat level (midnight) to survive the early merge and never was much of a target, barring his unlucky 5 person split at final 11. He didn't need any idols / advantages and didn't win any challenges, but he probably has the right skills to win some challenges or find advantages if things panned out differently. Super impressive performance on how much the social game still matters.

I would've really appreciated the Tommy win (and the entire season) more if it wasn't overshadowed by the controversy, it just put a sour taste in my mouth watching it. Also, was that an Office reference you snuck in there?

Tina 100% deserves more credit than Hatch does for actually pushing the needle of the game forward, for establishing that strategy /isn't/ evil, mal-intentioned, or backward, but is in fact /integral/ to the game, knowing that you can still be friends with everyone after without making things personal. Tina made Survivor a game to be thought about when it was originally just an adventure, for the majority of Borneo and America. And she absolutely deserves even more credit for playing a decent enough game in BvW to almost become the second two-time winner before Tony even stepped foot on our screen. A badass woman through and through.

Tina definitely played a better game than rich and definitely was the 1st person to completely dominate her season. Rich is still good but he don’t know what was goin on the 1st round and was in danger the final 4 round.

This is actually a really good road map of all the things we never saw that went into Erika's victory. She was basically the center of power come the final 8, she formed the group that blindsided Shan, and the fivesome she assembled of herself, Xander, Ricard, Heather, and Deshawn made it to the final 5. I do think Michelle deserves some mention as her game is a bit of a mix of Erika's and Danni's. She was never in trouble in the pre-merge because her tribe never lost, and when she was at the bottom with Julia she leveraged whatever social capital she could to stick around. But I also get not including her because she wasn't a behind-the-scenes mastermind like either of them, she just knew how to play from the bottom.

@@cdmak5627 No. Only her alliance wanted to keep her, with even Deshawn (Who ERIKA planted some seeds in) was ready to vote her out. Plus, ERIKA convinced Danny to vote with them so she could split the vote with Heather and Xander. It was both of them who really shaped that vote

Jenna's win is honestly so good, it's a shame the showrunners were deadset on portraying her as a whiny girl and gave all the screentime to Rob (which, okay, fair) and Matthew for some reason. She showed a lot of social tact through her run, pretty much everyone in the cast aside from Christy said they liked her and were down to work with her and even Christy ends up working with her at a few points in the game and voting for her in the end.

@@raheemfielder-bey998 Rewatch the season. Jenna was well-liked by the entire cast except for Christy, and even she voted for her in the end. She only had three votes against her all game, and two of them were because she smartly protected Heidi (it wasn't in Rob's interest to vote out Jenna, which is why he didn't). And then she won 6-1 in a landslide and would have beaten everyone else also except maybe Rob (it would have been close). Plus, four individual immunity wins. It's a very good win.

I really think women winners tend to play less flashy games, more subtle, because they know that women can't get away with the same stuff men can get away with. Because of that, their games are often underrated.

my hot take is that the pendulum has actually swung a bit too far the other way and while she seems like a sweet person and 100% doesn't deserve the backlash she's got for her win, she got pretty lucky during multiple parts of the game and never really had much control. there are def worse winners then her but i think she probably belongs in the bottom 10

Tina was very fortunate that she was on an early season where the players were much more interested in the adventure than strategizing or winning at all costs. Colby has infamously said that he picked Tina knowing that he had at best a 50/50 chance despite knowing taking Keith would 100% give him the win. I don't think Tina had any agency in that decision.

I agree. I don't think Tina is underrated at all, actually. If anything, I think she might be a bit overrated. Still a good player, don't get me wrong. But blindsiding Amber at the Jerri vote was extremely risky, as Amber could and should have flipped to Kucha immediately and voted out Tina at the next tribal, as there were no idols to save you in Season 2. Plus, Tina's game in Blood v. Water is not great, and Tina telling Monica that she was "rewarding" her with fifth place is an all-time dumb move.

Thank you for finally giving Tina the spotlight she rightfully deserves. While she is not a bombastic winner like some of the people who were in WaW, her subtle manipulations and her ability to connect with people make her one of the best winners the show had. Tommy is also someone I consider one of the best winners ever. His social maneuvering is a class on its own. The only round he was clueless was during Jason's boot at NuVokai and even then it wasn't in his control. I don't know how much Lauren would've given a run for his money but Tommy dominated this season more impressively than anyone who jingles idols in front of people's faces.

vecepia is so underrated that the own show didnt even give her a call for waw which is so wrong cause vecepia certainly deserved a spot on that season. knowing what we know now about what really happened in 41 it makes me even more annoyed at the edit that erika got. so much of the reason why people discredited her win or thought xander was robbed was because the show did not accurately show her gameplay. the editors did her more dirty than i already thought they did. tommy is an interesting winner in the eyes of the fandom where i dont think people really acknowledge him that much, but its not like hes discredited. he’s certainly underrated though since his game does get overlooked, which i do think is partly because the fandom mostly chooses to ignore island of the idols as a whole. danni is definitely underrated and i agree that her waw showing probably didnt do much to help her perception as opposed to someone like michele. while i see the logic in tina being underrated in regards to her truly pioneering the strategic mindset of survivor, i would not say that she is underrated overall since majority of the fandom seems to rate tinas game pretty highly. as for my own personal underrated winners, i think adam, fabio and jenna deserve more props and dont get enough credit for their games.

The reason I don’t think he’s that good of a winner is because almost all of his moves were actually Lauren’s moves. And during the FTC Lauren didn’t say a single thing or ask any questions. This let Tommy take all of the credit for her work because she wanted him to win over Dean. His people skills were good but Dean played so much better for always being on the bottom and dean clutched it with all of his individual immunity wins at the end when he was going to be voted off

It's so dumb to me that Danni's game on Guatemala gets discredited because of WaW. Like guys, they're two completely different seasons that are in no way connected outside of Danni being in both. How she played on WaW has nothing to do with her game on Guatemala and no one's placement on a returning season after their win should affect how we look at their original run. Someone had to be third out from WaW, it was gonna be one of the winners and it just so happened to be Danni. Doesn't mean she's a bad Survivor player, just that circumstances of the time led to her getting eliminated. Maybe if she manages to survive that vote or her team wins that episode and doesn't go to tribal, she'd be able to flip the narrative and reach the end or even win, who knows really. Survivor is first and foremost about trying your best to skew fortune in your favor, oftentimes skill has nothing to do with the game.

I actually think Chris Underwood is the most underrated winner. Mainly because he 100% shouldn't have won. However, he expertly exploited one of the least popular twists in the series in his favor. Both strategically and socially he handled his situation perfectly. Most fans hate EoE, but I don't think we should hold that against Chris. He flawlessly dealt with the hand he was given.

Tina is the GOAT and one of the best winners we have, and deserves so much respect for showing how important strategy and social skills are in Survivor. Literally showing people how to play the game that only had one season prior. The onion alliance evolved into the meat shield that other players have used. She went out there to win, her strategy, knowing when to cut her own alliance, and her final tribal performance was everything! Telling the jury not to take things personally...Iconic! Definitely one of the best strategists over 42 seasons. Understanding social cues and all her reads were spot on. I wish we got to see more in All Stars or brought back for Heroes vs Villains and Winners at War. She was so close to being the second two time winner if she was able to take out Tyson Vecepia is a Queen!! Literally an icon and it is criminal that the show never brought her back and Jeff mentioning she's one of his least favorite winners because she wasn't as flashy as the others. For me she'll always be the most underrated. Erika was my winner pick when the cast photos were released and I was so mad every time she wasn't shown. But because I was rooting for her, I was able to really pay attention to her and her moves in the game that I knew she was taking home that million and gave her the credit even when the show didn't. I joked on episode 2 that she was getting the Winchele edit and I was so bummed that's the storyline they went with. Xander completely misreading Erika's threat level and other moments was 10000% why he lost and people need to move on from that. Deserved her win and i'm glad the cast agree with how bad the show portrayed her

2nd viewing of season 39 made me realize how great of a season it was, esp compared to 41 42. Solid players and there's several I'd love to see play again. Honestly after watching every season but the last 2 multiple times, I think 39 is probably middle of the road. Definitely not fantastic but also much better than at least a dozen seasons

@@bellasmith2444 Well yeah, the TV product had a theme. They even highly implied a woman was going to win this season, Sandra even says as much. Kellee specifically named Tommy as the dude she was most comfortable with and she and Janet spoke very glowingly of him in regards to how he supported them. It just didn’t make air. Even so, the television product is most of my exposure to what happened so that’s what I go with. Tommy being a nice dude is a part of why his gameplay is so great: people were going out of their way to protect and defend him because they liked and trusted him. He probably beats Janet and maybe Lauren in a Final Tribal Council. All I’m saying is - as a piece of entertainment - for a season that was focused around women and was foreshadowing a woman was going to win Tommy broke that prediction and there was a clear reason why.

Yes, I love/adore/stan Queen Erika, BUT I feel bummed 9:21 that the advantage she got was so decisive, whereas Lindsay got a much rougher deal the very next season. I feel like both Lynze and Ricard, as well as our Canadian Queens, occupy very similar places in their seasons' narratives. Definitely worth thinking about how the two seasons would be different if those advantages were swapped.

Ricard was 25 pieces behind Erika so I’m actually really confused why people only fault Erika for this when literally Xander heather and Deshawn all got lucky she beat him. Had there been no advantage Erika still wins the immunity and I honestly find it delusional to say otherwise. Erika went through her obstacles quickly and would have no problem doing the same thing had she did more

Top Tier picks for Final 5 Underrated Winners. V, Erika, Tina and Danni truly deserved the top spots. Their winning seasons are my favorite seasons also of all time. AND NOT those overrated season like Cagayan. S41 (restart era) and Guatemala (HII Era) really were the start of different eras.
