The only time I use Synchronize Folder is when I have manually added a photo to a folder, and need Lightroom to see it. Or, sometimes simply having an external app save to a folder and running Synchronize Folder is easier than trying to go through the Lightroom Import process.

This was a terrific tip. I see myself having to do this very regularly as I go through my pictures and give them more detailed names

Great tip! Very useful. It was a light bulb moment when I learned I can add photos to an already imported folder and synchronize to import the new added images. Thank you Anthony!

Wow, I actually just ran into this issue yesterday and couldn’t figure out why Lightroom couldn’t find my photos. I did the synchronization and it found most of my photos. Thank you for the information. There are still some that are grayed out in my library with an exclamation point in the upper right hand corner.

Also as important is optimizing the database. It was running very slowly for me and as soon as I optimized the database the performance returned to normal. For me, the way I import photos is through the synchronize photos options. I know, it's a bit different than how others do it, but I store everything on a NAS in the original folders and use the other file management options for sorting.

Thanks. Appreciate this advice. And I also assume that, if I don't do a backup of my catalog regularly, this is a particularly good time to do that when I next shut down Lightroom?

Thanks for the info is there also a way to make sure your presets are up to date faster. I have found that some where not do updated so by clicking each on each one individually , this also speed up Lightroom

Appreciate all your videos Anthony. I have a dual monitor setup and would love to have one screen full size for the image and use the other monitor for accessing the controls and editing menus. I haven't been able to find anyway to configure Lightroom ... perhaps you know of a way? I am on a MS Windows platform btw.

Help !!! My Lightroom Catalog is a mess and would like to start again from scratch but don't know how or possible to do so. I had around 6,100 image in there and did as the video suggested and now I have over 13,000. First off Anthony I am not accusing the video of anything but I think it has high lighted the issues of my mixed up system. I fear it has doubled ( could delete one I suppose but which one ? )the catalog and some so would you be able to give advise on how I could fix this. Thank you anyway for all the videos you produced over the years, they are THE most informative and enjoyable. HAPPY NEW YEAR !!

Many thanks Anthony. When I tried this on my PC, the "Synchronise Now" button was greyed out. I had to uncheck the second of the three options before it became active. Why would this happen?

I use an SSD for LrC but my images are stored on my Mac drive. When I ran synchronise folders for missing images the result was in its thousands. The Lightroom images shows a count of 56K normally but the missing images count was much higher than that suggesting all my images were mixed. My question is how can this be and is it because my images are on on drive and LrC is on an external SSD? Don't want to do anything until I am sure. Thanks in advance.

Hi Anthony, great tip - never did it before with my 90,000+ images in one catalog. Unfortunately I ran into a problem I couldn’t solve so far: I have my photos physically stored on a Synologoy NAS and the catalog on the Mac. When running the sync folder process you describe, Lightroom terminates the connection to the NAS after a while (while still counting). Syncing individual folders works with some, while syncing others (those with larger numbers of photos in them) results in the same problem. Any idea what may cause this behaviour of Lightroom?

It's "how I roll". I don't use LrC's functions to (automatically) import new images from card media. At OS level, I first copy the files to a target directory for the raw files and then open LrC and synchronize. Nothing scary or exciting. When you grow to the number of files of Anthony Morganti in one catalog (almost 80,000) then it is very important to have sidecar files IMO. This gives to each image its own file with the LrC corrections. That sidecar is also a bridge for seamless integration with some 3rd part apps because recently some raw file preprocessors use it to share their insights. A corrupted catalogue is easily recreated from folders with sidecar files, or from a backup.

Tried the sync folder function you mentioned. I ran that function and while it took for ever ( m ysystem is running slow) it added 28552 pictures to an already existing 38366 photos. thiinking taht most or all of the added 28552 are part of the the 38366 photos. The added photos are contained in the 'previos import' file. should I delete the 'previous import' file? Running Windows10 on a HP desktop.

I don't think someone should do this synchronizing unless they fully understand what these functions do. WRT Scan for metadata updates: Isn't there a danger that they could lose all the adjustments they have made to many of their image files in the Develop module if they update the metadata without knowing the full implications?

BAD IDEA ... for my workflow at least!!!!! I keep my final JPG output in subfolders of the folders that contain my source files (raw files). I DO NOT want those JPGs to be in my LR catalog, and this process would find them all and want to add them. I can handle infrequent metadata sync issues on a case-by-case basis.
@Vor1954

What you describe is exactly the reason why I don’t save my final edited jpegs into the same folder as it’s original working images.
@rghurst
@rghurst Жыл бұрын
@@Vor1954 Not the same folder ... a subfolder below it. To be honest, the "problem" that Anthony describes in this video has never been an issue for me, so I don't really need this "solution." It sounds like a problem that would occur if you don't have good discipline in your file management. In any case, it's not something I have any use for.

I store all my raw files on an external drive. On the same drive, I have a folder called "Processed Images" that mirrors the same folder structure. Are you saying that if I run this Sync process LR is going to try to import all my processed jpg files/folders?
@rghurst
@rghurst Жыл бұрын
@@ericwilcox2442 I don't think so since your JPG files aren't in "subfolders" of the raw files folders. I question keeping raw files on an external drive ... at least the raw files I am currently working with. I have three NVMe Gen4 M.2 drives. One 1TB for OS/Programs, one 1 TB for cache/scratch files, and one 4TB for Project Files (a rolling 6-12 months of my most recent work). I archive project files to external drives as needed. External drives are pretty slow to actually work from these days.
@ericwilcox2442
@ericwilcox2442 Жыл бұрын
@@rghurst Thanks for the input. I'll probably try the Sync. I have the same computer setup as you (2x 1T drives) but don't have any problems processing pics while the raw files are stored on my 8T external. My only problem with the drive so far is that it only has about 1T remaining before it's full! 😆
