I had terrible perioral dermatitis for over a year. Unfortunately both tetracycline antibiotics I was prescribed (lymecycline and doxycycline) were ineffective. I removed all acids, face masks and serums from my routine and used only a gentle balm-to-oil cleanser (Emma Hardie) and a rich hydrating moisturiser (Avene Hydrance Riche). After about 4 months I was dermatitis free and have only recently started re-encorporating some acid-based toners into my routine. Thanks for the great advice Dr Emma and Dr Sam!

I really appreciate your informative videos Dr Sam. I would like to comment though, that suggesting avoiding fluoridated toothpaste anecdotally to improve perioral dermatitis should be said with caution. The risks vs benefits of using a fluoridated toothpaste should be weighed up, given the individuals overall health, including dermatological and oral condition. Fluoride is an important factor in preventing dental decay, and when there are no changes to other factors (eg high acid/ sugar diet, medications that cause dry mouth), cutting out fluoride may be detrimental to the teeth. Just my two cents.

Thanks for the advice. I get this on frequent occasions. Not sure of the trigger (not toothpaste). If I catch it at first hint I find using aveno moisturiser is really gentle and calms it. If I need to cover it (at work I have to!), bare minerals powder seems to cover and not irritate it. If anything the combination helps. Not sure why. If I do both of these straight away, within two days it's normally gone.

I really appreciate this, thanks so much! It was really informative. You are wonderful. I have gotten perioral dermatitis (I have never had it before)from going on accutane and it's so painful and raw. I have gone on a antifungal/inflammatory cream and lip moisturiser on advice from a pharmacist and it slowly seems to be healing up.

Look into taking probiotics and healing your gut. Also about candida and yeast as this is another major cause of perioral dermatitis. You need to get to the root cause not just mask it. Avoid antifungals, anti biotics and steriods

My 5 year old has bad perioral dermatitis, in his case it is a side effect from long term oral steroids he takes for an unrelated condition (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy). I know someone who had a lot of success with Avene's cicalfate cream, which I am about to try. So far oral antibiotics, antibiotic cream, and antiseptic cream have done nothing, while a sensitive skin moisturiser (Aveeno) has made a slight improvement but not much. The GP misdiagnosed it as impetigo at first, which I don't really get because it looks nothing like impetigo! Thanks for this video.

My PD was caused by fragrance in a makeup product I was using, and then from excessive use of cortisone cream (during my attempt to calm my skin after the fragrance reaction) The only things that helped clear my PD was: using water based, simple skincare (cleanse, hyaluronic serum, water based moisturizer.. 2x a day). AND I think most notably, the use of Elidel cream (prescribed by my doctor) it does NOT contain steroids. It actually helps to repair the skin after excessive steroid use and also calms excessively dry skin. It’s not an overnight miracle, give it a week to clear fully. It’s a pain- I know.

What skincare products would you recommend for this condition? I was diagnosed with it this year, it's gotten better but I don't want to aggravate it so I'm looking for a good skincare routine with minimal products. I try to use more natural, nontoxic products but im unsure as to what would be best to use.

Hi Sam, is there anything I can do about this during (very very) early stages of pregnancy? I have had horrible hormonal acne for the last couple of months but after watching this and doing some reading, I think the worst of it might actually be perioral dermatitis. I am using Effaclar duo on my whole face (with limited results two weeks in to be honest) and just ordered some Paula's choice 2% salicylic acid liquid, but am now concerned about whether I should use this in pregnancy and whether it will actually make the perioral dermatitis worse. I tried Pixi Glow Tonic and it made my skin a bit unhappy, but I read that salicylic acid is better for treating acne. Sorry - it feels like this is lots of questions rolled into one! Also trying to work out whether I can afford to book an appointment with you to sort it out once and for all! Xx

I have PD right now for the first time. I've had clear skin my whole life and am in my mid-40s. I know that mine is not from toothpaste as I use all natural toothpaste. It seems to have come on from the mini-pill. A lot of reading I have done has said that dermatologists have recommended cleansers with sulfur but you didn't mention sulfur and I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on it. You also didn't talk much about that acid you recommended so I'm not even sure what product I might be looking for.

Is perioral dermatitis the same as angular cheilitis? In Europe, and every doctor, heilprakiter knows that it is the first sign of a lack of vitamin B2. Riboflavin deficiency. It is related to hormones, if you menstruate, you need more. Take 1 x B2 + 1x multi-B tablet for a week, (!00 to 200mg) Recommended dose i s 1.5 to 2 mg, this is much too low for young people. 100mg once a week thereafter or 10mg daily. Source: Experience, Merck’s manual, Upjohn’s vitamin manual, the Nurient bible by Henry Osiecki. Newton’s pharmacy. NHMRC riboflavin recommendations for Australian adults: 1. - RDI men: 1.3 mg/day - RDIwomen:1.1mg/day
