By ear. None of them are trained or well versed in music theory past the basics. They just play what sounds and feels good to them.

Use extended chord voicings, play weirdly timed phrases/syncopation and turn them around so they can fit into 4/4 time, learn some key modulation, advance your technique repertoire (tapping, hammer ons, wide interval slides), get familiar with this playing style as it involves a lot of open strings, and of course lots of practice. I'm sure I'm missing other key characteristics and I mostly covered guitar stuff but those are some of the things that stick out to me.

I disagree. The learning curves are completely different, in that guitar is a physical skill, something that just requires practice, where recording/mixing is a mental/intuitive skill. You need some basic knowlege, and the rest is all trial and error. I've invested about the same amount of time into each, and I can record and mix an album, but I can't play what Jake just did.

I'd love to see playthrough's with all 3 guitar parts on them.. The thing that separates Periphery from other bands IMO is how well you guys space your playing. It's incredible how well 3 guitars can work together.
