This song started out as a very short soundclick demo. I had actually written all the parts that are in the demo in a Guitar Center whilst trying out the new Mesa Mark V which had just arrived, and sometimes you just get inspired by good sounding gear. The part I demoed ended up being the middle section of the song, and I remember being very intrigued by Mark's phrasing and style and was definitely letting that influence me (even though he wasn't in the band yet). This sat as a very short demo for a while because I just didn't have any other ideas for the song, and didn't want to force it. But when Mark joined up, I knew he and I would have to complete this since he was an influence on the writing. The first riff of the song was something that he had been jamming on for a while, and it is the perfect example of how a simple riff can be just as moving and powerful as a complex one if written just right. We started recording his ideas, and as I was writing riffs to add to his, I realized that my original Mile Zero ideas fit perfectly and fluidly moved the arrangement along. Before we knew it we had a complete song, and at that point Spencer started to demo some vocal ideas for the complete arrangement. When we heard his demos we knew that this song had to be on the album. It has a very different vibe from the other songs, and the arrangement is a lot more progressive than the beginning of the song might leave the listener to believe making it a pleasant surprise in my opinion. The finishing touch was Wes Hauch's solo. Wes is one of our best friends, and we have always told people that he is the best guitarist that people don't know about yet, we wanted show people why we believe that, and his solo is definitely one of my favorite moments of the album. Again we gave him no direction and just told him to do his thing, and he just went to town on that section. An interesting to note about the section that he solos over is that it is technically the beginning riff of the song, but with the downbeat in a different place. Before we ever recorded this song, Mark would jam on the riff, and that was where I heard the downbeat on the riff, but when we recorded it and Mark was playing it to a click, i realized the downbeat was in a completely different place, giving the riff a much groovier and swingy feel. We decided to have it go Mark's way first and mine second (which ended up being the solo section after the fact) and the intro riff is purposely introduced in a way that makes it a bit unclear as to where the actual downbeat is. Fun times! - Misha
I had written a couple really simple, fluffy riff ideas - the first 2 riffs in the song - they had sort of a Devin Townsend vibe to them and we tried to see if we could make them work with any of our pre-existing song ideas. They ended up being the same tempo as the original "Mile Zero" riffs that Misha had written beforehand, and we succeeded in connecting those ideas in a natural way. It's a really different Periphery song but I love how light and optimistic it sounds coming near the end of such a dense album. I remember us arranging it late at night and not even really intending it to be for the new album, it just happened that we all liked it and felt the album could use one more song. It also has probably my favorite solo on the album, with Wes Hauch being the perpetrator. His guitar playing makes me want to jump off a bridge. - Mark

I love it, Mile zero has less complex meaning compared to the overarching storyline of Alpha and Omega. And yet this song is just as powerful simply because the passing of a friend is something that hits so close for so many people.

today, a twitch streamer by the name of puppers passed away. he was well-known in the dead by daylight community as one of the friendliest, comfiest guys out there. he made no enemies, only friends. his amazing community was always growing, and he'd peak at a thousand viewers each stream. and then in early 2020, he suffered a stroke. it turns out he had terminal ALS. for the next 3 years, he suffered. he would regularly vent his frustrations and pain on twitter, which was just heartbreaking. he slowly lost the ability to do the things we all take for granted: walking, talking, moving, eating, drinking, and at the end of may 2023... breathing. he spent a short time on a ventilator, but he'd already fought his fight. he chose to be taken off the ventilator for his last days. he finally succumbed to his disease earlier today. as someone who had been keeping an eye on his situation, it's devastating that the day we all dreaded finally came. so why am i writing this? well, being an autistic person is very interesting when it comes to emotions. i often find myself unable to properly grieve as my brain responds weirdly to things like death and loss. yet, i find music like this, and it helps me ground myself. when i heard 3:46, i was finally able to shed the tears that i'd been bottling up. thank you.

It starts as one festering feeling The kind that cuts from the flesh down to the soul No way to make amends for the time behind the door Street lights feed lies straight to the mind of the wishful wanderer How could he give up? No second chances to say goodbye. Wrapped in this cold, nostalgic energy from the cries of the ones who are Buried Ascend beyond. Life is ruthless and shot full of pain. It lifts you up, leaves you out in the rain, And it hurts just to know that you're not coming back again. I will miss you my friend Memories like a slug to the brain Paint the walls with a love that will stain the darkest of nights You left to join the stars and I cannot shake this off my chest. In death we grieve until all have transcended from this realm In time we will meet again. Suddenly I can feel the connection between dimension ties Open gut on the floor. Trembling down to the core. What is this? It's been a long ride without you I'm lost inside my own world. There's not a single day where I've feigned the acceptance, But it's a somber stroll down this road that we call life. The silence still is crawling out of my sedated sight. How can I be free? Wrapped in this cold, nostalgic energy from the cries of the ones who are Buried Ascend beyond. Life is ruthless and shot full of pain. It lifts you up, leaves you out in the rain, And it hurts just to know that you're not coming back again. I will miss you my friend Memories like a slug to the brain Paint the walls with a love that will stain the darkest of nights Left to journey alone, but I can find my way back home

This band has changed my life...and to think that half a year ago, I wasn't really a fan of these guys, mainly due to the fact scream vocals put me off a tad since I wasn't used to it, though I always did appreciate the musicianship of these djentlemen. After at least 3 hours of listening to this album front to back, my mind is absolutely blown. This song really tied it all together for me. I really loved the back stories the band wrote in the about section for each song and I think Mark explained it perfectly on this one. It's hard to explain but after listening to this song, which is one of my favorites from the album, I feel like I've evolved or something. I can't say I've ever felt this way after listening to an album and I've listened to A LOT of music. I've been a fan of the band since the beginning and I've always been very impressed but this album took it to another level. These guys are very special musicians. This is the stuff of legends. Even though some of the songs didn't move me emotionally, somehow I felt very motivated to continue listening. This album demanded my attention and even when it left me confused, overwhelmed, and uncomfortable I still was drawn in like a magnet and now I feel enlightened, humbled and peaceful. The last few hours have been an epic journey that I will never forget. Thank you Periphery!

Being a guitarist, I want to love periphery as much as I do for the guitarist. Mark, Misha, and Jake are great. Technically gifted but don't allow the technicality to overtake the musicality, which is key. However...What makes this band so amazing to me is Spencer. Such a vocally gifted man. What sold it for me was seeing them live. First time I've heard a vocalist sound so great live and on a record. Keep it up Periphery :)

did you try to imagine the songs with full growl/scream/etc? now that's something that would castrate this whole album... i agree Spencer's agressive growling that comes up during the songs is fucking beast, but what he gives with his cleans on this album is just epicly immense! this quality should not be rammed into shit with comments like yours... you clearly have no idea how great his voice and his singing skills are.

Look up "Al Mu'min Heavy Blog is Heavy." I never got the chance to see The HAARP Machine live before they broke up unfortunately, but from what I've heard he was a pretty sloppy player and he even had to change some of his guitar lines. Not all that surprising though. I'm sure he's a great player, but there's no way some of the riffs on the album could be played by a human and still sound so tight.

"Artist" I'm not sure I'd use that word in the same sentence as Bieber. He has a good voice. That's his major contribution to his music. From what I can tell he's nothing more than the record company's puppet at this point.

Ahhhh... years ago I declared this one the best song I ever heard... I mean just listen the way that the rhythms enhance the melody and how the melody flows. I love the emotional weight and the way the song progresses it's very unique with the key changes after the first chorus it feels like the song is turning upside down and falling apart just to reassemble in the last possible second to take us to one of the greatest solos ever. It's like reading a novel when you finally hit the climax of the story and you be like "jesus what is going on!? this is GREAT!". It's taking me from the first to the last second and leaves me in awe even after so many times of listening. Absolutely inspiring stuff!

Such a good song. I’m starting to find almost every song on this album great. So far it’s: have a blast, froggin’ bullfish, mile zero, the gods must have gone crazy, masamune, ragnarok, maramasa, Erised, Epoch, and scarlet that are my favourites.

I'd love to see some covers if you'd like to put them up. I highly doubt you can play some of the riffs like they were on the album. Even Al said that he can't play them like the were on the album live. Still, I'd love to see your covers. I'm pretty skeptical, but it would be awesome if you can play them all really tight and up to speed.

What’s their not to love ? I’ve always listened to metal , all genres . Periphery is in their own genre to me . Spencer has a great voice and is a great song writer . It’s challenging to lay down vocals over music that is so complex . We’ve all lost loved ones so we all can relate . This is one of many of musical masterpieces they have Witten !
