This song was something that I had been sitting on for a while before even demoing it. I had been jamming on the riffs for a while, but sometimes I get worried when I track something for the first time because if the ideas don't inspire enough other riffs/ideas, then the song usually ends up being an incomplete demo that kinda just sits there for a while. I was going for something playful and fun with the riffs i wrote, and it seemed to be developing a very "video-gamey" sound which I am a fan of, so I ran with that kind of feel for the riffs. I was really happy with the 2 or so minutes that i demoed, but I had no idea where the song should go next, and as a result the song sat there for a little while. When we were writing/demoing songs to rework for the album, this one came up, and I invited Jake and Mark to come over to help me work on it and complete it. Mark wrote some riffs which really jumpstarted the song back to life, and we spent some time on the arrangement making sure it would be just right. Thanks to Jan at our management, we managed to get the legendary Guthrie Govan to agree to a guest solo, and the section near the end of the song seemed perfect for his style. When I heard his solo for the first time over the song, I was so giddy, I couldn't wipe the smile off of my face! All in all, this track ended up being one of my personal favorites from the album, and we decided that with it's quirky violin intro, it could be a really different way to officially start off the album, because we considered Muramasa to really be more of an intro to ramp things up rather than the first actual song. - Misha

It's always a difficulty with the riffing and vocal things. Some people love the guitars but hate the vocals. This track has been spooking between my ears for over a month now and i personally like the vocals a lot. Spencer has a great voice and the songs got an awesome progression. I like the heavy growling but after years of death metal and heavy stuff, clean vocals is just such a nice change. Really all the growling and shouting gets real old, real fast since nowadays every ass and his mom does it and it always sounds the same. Love your band and this album in particular. Thumbs way up !
@mondoXpeanut
@mondoXpeanut 7 жыл бұрын
The worst part for me is that every ass and his mom can't growl in a satisfying way. I like the sounds that the vocalists from bands like Meshuggah, InFlames, Uneven Structure, Children of Bodom, Soilwork, Killswitch Engage, Opeth, Devin Townsend (much prefer Ziltoid to any Strapping Young Lad stuff) can produce - a growl with some content and tonal differentiation. But your average garage metal band seems only to be able reproduce a cringe worthy, paper-bag-on-a-dry-day, psychosocial sorta scream that ends up competing with the guitar tone. I think that's why I like Periphery so much. All the different aspects of their songs contrast and harmonize in interesting ways - every one of them can flit back and forth between heavy and light to really give a composition variance and energy whilst iterating over a theme. Surely that's gotta be more fun than just ripping your throat out for a whole album? eh?

Thank you for purchasing Periphery's self-titled debut long play record Periphery! On this album you will hear heavy metal, a genre of music from the future Be dazzled by distortion, be bombarded by bass-beats, and jitterbug to djent We're sure you will enjoy such finger-popping tunes as "Light," "Insomnia," and my own personal favorite, "Ragtime Dandies!" These songs and more are played by a talented troupe of traveling troubadours, featuring the likes of Misha, "The Electric Light Bulb" Mansoor, who was voted the 23rd most influential person in "Brown Magazine," and can be found on the cover of this months "Mocha Imporium" And look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Trent Reznor! No, it's Jake Bowen and his seven strings of wonder! Rounding off the trio of stringsman is Alex Bois, the man with the arms of steel and the ass of a skunk On drums is Matt Halpern, the only man who can break three cymbals with one swing of the stick! Our lead singer will be Spencer Sotelo, who's voice goes up like an angel and down like a wounded ox Last but not least is Tom Murphy providing the rumble from down under, and is the only member of Periphery decent enough for the institution of marriage Experience heavy-metal at it's finest. Periphery! Love That Shit! *seamless transition into Totla mad* STRIP AWAY. ALL THE EXCESS. COMPONENTS...

Caught in the mundane The day to day, it traps us so tightly Escape the cubicle cell enslaving time of the resident slave Just another clone stamped in the system who cannot think for yourself It's raining pens and staples on the prisoner questioning our real purpose Bury your sense of worth beneath the desk you call your home Consistent overflowing with no way out Now you're always entertaining thoughts meandering Ambition slowly rolling, steady, downhill A puppet never disobeying the strings attached from hands to toes From head to fucking toes And it's the thrill of life that enables us to flow Locked In the spirit's line, souls entwine, to journey on as one I guess it's the fear of all that keeps us on the road Locked in the spirit's line, souls entwine, to journey on as one Behold our creation… A walking dead Step back and realize what you are fed Escape the mortal mentality It's a lesson that can't be ignored for long My destination lies within the song Blistering reality Imagining a world in limelight Never will it be out of my reach I've heard the lies a million times, but did it ever steal from my soul? Bleeding from the lungs, I see, a life complete above the darkest hole And it's the thrill of life that enables us to flow Locked In the spirit's line, souls entwine, to journey on as one A world so masochistic Envious, broken system The infant braving infested waters, collecting prominent rage Torment in reality, for I leave it

That has to be one of the most beautiful intros I've ever heard. In fact, the whole song is just amazing. Periphery REALLY stepped it up with this album. Great job.

Ive listened to this song since it came out & just found out that guthrie played the solo at the end, and now that i know that, i cannot unhear it. I can hear his style so obviously in it now.

Best song for when you need to wake up. The only very dark metal that i know that is very happy at the same time. The grunts and the happy arpegio's. Amazing!!

This song truly captures how important it is in our lives to enjoy it, to live it and take it in, or else all the big decisions we make are for naught. Or at least that's how I feel about it.
