All I've wanted and more, living beyond the door Right behind the front door Painting the patterns I've become within my eyes Murals fade, but lessons they sow And as the paths we wander have shown, our hearts will grow Beauty wades within the sound soul I've said so long to sanity Picked apart the way I am, but living to tell The surgery of mending pieces Is hanging over me and the world's watching today Yeah, this is still life Make it mine Used to do it all the time Dust off your shoulders through it Yeah, this is still life Make it mine, I used to do it all the time Sick of living low I've gotta let the feeling go Painting the patterns I've become within my eyes Murals fade, but lessons they sow And as the paths we wander have shown, our hearts will grow Beauty wades within the sound soul Yeah, this is still life Make it mine Used to do it all the time Dust off your shoulders through it Yeah, this is still life Make it mine, used to do it all the time Sick of living low I've gotta pick me off the floor Stay in the upright One second, one day, one step Just keep moving One step, keep moving Keep your head up high One second, one day, one step You're not on your own No, no, no I'm feeling like an empty room No, nothing ever fits, but I will find my way Resume Oh, I will find my way, resume Who am I staring at? All I've wanted and more, living beyond the door Right behind the front door Must I lay here as a product of the world I never leave? Spencer really carries this album in my opinion. That's what I thought when I was listening to it for the first few times. From my understanding many of the lyrics are really personal and you can feel it in the melodies and in the vibes of the songs. I am a huge fan of Periphery's music and in the album documentaries you can really see that all the members contribute so much to the songs. But I want to express my admiration for the work that Spencer does. The melodies and singing performances are just outstanding in my opinion and when I really feel that the singer is totally behind what they are singing then I know it is real art and that gives me goosebumps. I have that feeling when I listen to Spencer singing. It is also very brave and a gift to the world when people open their hearts and write about personal things because other people can relate to it and it gives them a feeling of not being alone with their emotions. We're all human beings. I'm happy that there are musicians like these out there making true art. It's really a beautiful thought.

@@mattiodowd3209 Huge amount of filler notes in between the lows, most of these passages are generally some arpeggios with some slight variations here and there, the rhythm is moreso implied by the flow of the melody and phrasing rather than the actual note duration, the base chord progression below the riff is diatonic and ending in bVI. These are all Mark's signature traits. You can hear them in the main/opening riffs of Scarlet, The Way the News Goes, It's Only Smiles and Reptile, to name a few. In general, Mark's riffs feel very open, fluid in their rhythm and note choices, almost unstructured yet perfectly coherent and they are usually diatonic and fairly melodic, despite their general high complexity. Of course there is a chance we are wrong, especially since Periphery's guitarists are imitating each other's styles more and more, but this is definitely a Mark-sounding riff. One second, one day, one step, JUST KEEP MOVING
@JasonParadise Жыл бұрын
Might be overanalyzing this, but hot damn these lyrics hit hard. To me these lyrics perfectly convey someone attempting to overcome mental struggles in the face of usual life continuing on around you, all with folks watching or potentially expecting things of you ("and the world is watching today"). Growing from the past ("the surgery of mending pieces") and trying to "resume" where you left off before falling off track. This isn't something they're had trouble with in the past and reaffirm to themselves in the chorus they can do it. ("This is still life, make it mine. Used to do it all the time. Dust off your shoulders through it.") Whether one second, one day, one step at a time. Just keep moving forward. All the while, the machines are cranking on. The way Spencer's scream at 6:00 fades out into the music as if being absorbed by the "machines"? It hits just right. The struggles fitting back into the world after " the damage that’s done when you fly with wax wings in the sun." Perhaps this is even about their own struggles with success? 10/10 one of my new favorite Periphery songs

The latter third or so of this song is legitimately one of the most beautiful things Periphery has ever written. And perhaps Spencer's most incredible vocal performance to date. One of the few times in recent memory I had to listen to a song twice when going through the album for the first time.

It’s emotional and a beaut of an ending, but this is Periphery we’re taking about hear and Jetpacks, the opening riff and clean guitar outro from All New Materials, and the intro riff to It’s Only Smiles top this

It’s a lot easier to appreciate and be impressed by what periphery if you play an instrument of some kind. Even if it’s just a hobby. They’re hands down the most palatable band that makes any sort of progressive metal for people who don’t though. So many metalcore bands now are just discount periphery for that reason lol. That In itself is a feat. A lot of “prog metal” is pretty much unlistenable.

I've been a Periphery fan since P II. The Way the News Goes was always my favorite, but after like 10 listens this is genuinely rivaling it. This is just crazy

I'm new to Periphery (thank you Steve Lukather for turning me on to this band!), and I gotta say these guys are seriously impressive. WOW. Masterpiece of a journey here from beginning to end, right down to the way the fade-out wobbles between the left and right channels. Consider me a new fan!

The outro to this song makes me feel like I'm back in a time in my life when I was happy. When things were just, simple. The innocence, the bliss. I can almost smell the air and feel the wind on my skin. See the smiles from the dear friends of a past life. A time, that I'm holding onto like an infant child. This is hands down, my favorite Periphery song of all time. Thank you, for reminding me what it actually means to live.

Periphery do not waste a second on any song, longer songs are well justified and unlike most bands same tired structure of a song these guys take you on a journey and mix it the fuck up.. since juggernaut I've appreciated how you evoke so many emotions and feelings with me, amazing band thank you.

Great track - thank you, Periphery. It's early days for the new album and - despite Periphery being one of my favourite bands - it always takes me a while to wrap my head around new music. This has so far proved to be my favourite with an instant 'click'. And whilst the second half of the song is absolutely epic, I think the first half deserves just as much credit.

I hope you check out more of Periphery if you haven't already. For more songs with insane vocal performances, listen to Ragnarok (heavy but has a huge climax at the end), Satellites (the vocalist hits his highest note in this song at the 5 minute section) and Absolomb (his vocal gymnastics in this song are crazy).
