Magnificent beast. I've said this before but the most spectacular thing I've ever seen was when I was in the Navy. Two Tomcats flew either side of our destroyer's masts at high speed, no more than 50 feet either side and no more than 100 feet from sea level. As soon as they had passed us they pulled up vertically and hit the afterburners. It's still probably the most spectacular and noisiest thing I have ever witnessed.

My first time seeing the F-14 was at an air show in Memphis. I was barely out of basic training and had never witnessed anything like it. It was fairly new in the inventory at that time and was slated to replace the F-4 phantom. It did an overhead pass, then hit AB, pointed nearly vertical, and disappeared from sight in no time. I was pretty much enamored by the Tomcat ever since then. It was one of the most maintenance-intensive aircraft the Navy had at the time, but was also the most badass! If there wasn't a fuel seep somewhere, it was probably out of gas, and the wing sweep system was a nightmare to maintain, but when it was working, it was a formidable platform.

When I was in 7th grade, I got to fly out to the JFK and ride the carrier home with my father from Bermuda to Florida as she finished out a six month cruise. The air squadron on the boat was stationed in Virginia so they had to peel off as the boat made its way to port in Florida. My dad worked on the boilers but had a buddy in radar, so I had the opportunity to hang with him and his son on the island. I got to watch every A6, F14, and F18 take off from the deck and fly back to VA while cruising through the Atlantic back to FL. Raddest experience of my childhood! Just something about the F14 thats the perfect combination of sleek, elegant and mean. It made no tactical or financial sense, but I would have loved to see the Navy's F22 swept wing concept. That had nothing to do with its retirement. It was Dick Cheney who wanted them retired during Iran sanctions to ensure parts are not smuggled to Iran (as Iran had been caught twice). All of the F-14 pilots love talking about the F-14 and wish they could fly it again. It was an incredible performing fighter that defeated much smaller and lighter fighters in dog fights. That is why it was used so extensively in air shows to demonstrate its agility. Only issue was the earlier F-14A version was the TF-030 engines could stall at very high angle of attack (when throttle was rapidly slammed from idle to full power). This issue was fixed with the GE-110 engines in B/D versions. The version in this video is the B version with the GE-110 engine.

Though, being a very complex fighter, it required a lot of maintenance and 2 man crew, the F-14D was built in the 1990s. It had full glass avionics, fly by wire throttle, LANTRN pods, GE-F110 engines producing 58,000 lbsf of thrust and IRST. Navy asked for 120 new F-14D and keep the 37 F-14D operational till 2025 and beyond while retiring all F-14A versions built in the 70s and 80s. Dick Cheney refused. Navy took it to court. Navy was super pissed. It had the highest number of sorties in the final year in Afghanistan in 2006. It was retired at its peak. If F-15C are flying, there is no reason why F-14D could not be flying today.

Why Iran? You used to be able to go up in old Russian MiG21,joy flights, for 15 minute you had to pay around 1000$.This was about 10 years ago,i saw it advertise in Australia.

Francisc Josif Mos Iran has about 40 model A tomcat's still. At the time we where their ally and supplied them with equipment and personnel to operate/train their pilots. But they turned on us and soon after that our tomcat techs destroyed everything to make their tomcats run. But somehow they got Russian's who knew about our old systems to restore them to flight status. In the US once we retired that plane all of them where stripped of the engines and all equipment and one's that were not going to a flight museum were sent to the scrap heap and the metal melted down for other uses. That's why Iran, you can't just go out and buy a surplus tomcat like you could back from WWII days buy a surplus military aircraft and fly it around.

I was a test cell tech at Oceana NAS in 73-74 when we had to mod the thrust bed and test cell to handle the engine from this bird. I was in the crew the first time we tested one of these engines. Two chiefs and a couple 1st class POs and me were inside the cell when they fired it up and even lit the afterburners. It was a sight to behold. Ordinary, we were not in the test cell at more than 40 % throttle, but they lit the 12 stage afterburner (think I was 12) while we were in there watching it. Then back down to 40% throttle I would climb all over the engine and check all the seams for leaks. It was a nice gig in the Navy doing my time at Oceana NAS and I had some great Navy buddies. It was gold but I was happy to do my time and get out.

Back in the late 80s I had an IT client in Grand Prairie (between Dallas and Arlington). There was a Naval Air Station located near a lake in Grand Prairie where Navy Reserve outfits operated/trained with F-14s. Every time I went to the client's office I drove I-30 (formerly DFW Turnpike) which took me right under the northern approach to the Air Station. The F-14s would be coming in from the north (over Irving) screaming with their wings all the way back, then they would pass overhead and begin a wide sweeping 360 turn while they slowed down, landing gear deployed and wings swept forward. Looked just like a bird of prey coming down to grab me off the road! Incredibly impressive! Glad those were USA aircraft and not one of our enemies!!! F-14 is still the most powerful fighter aircraft ever operated by the USA.

Such a cool looking jet. Big burly shoulders, and it looks fast just sitting on the rap. When you see it fly though, it definitely doesn't have what today's jets do. Interesting side-note: A variant of the Phoenix missile (long-range air-to-air missile on the Tomcat) was designed for the YF-12 (Blackbird Interceptor (never deployed)).

The US Navy should have kept building new airframes and kept this bird flying today. It was such a capable aircraft and our enemies were frightened when they saw the F-14 on their radar. Such a shame they are gone..
@wolfgangjr746 жыл бұрын
I agree. I feel honored to have had the privilege to work on their electronics while I was in the Navy. I remember fondly walking around them and under. Those turkeys where huge! Navy is truly in the need of an Interceptor again with systems even more powerful than the F14 had. Forever a USN favorite! There is a simulator called DCS that has a module with a variants of the F-14 one can fly. Should be interesting.
