This was my Uncle and another pilot. Gulf of Sidra 1989. Quidalfi sent two Migs to destroy their carrier. After several attempts to get the migs to turn around they decided to fly in front on them. This migs locked on and my Uncle and the other pilot had to shoot them down. They mig pilots deployed their ejection seats and chutes but my Uncle said the water was too cold for them to survive. My family has the original video on VHS. My Uncle retired in 2000 after an amazing 20 years as a pilot. Thanks to all who have served, those serving, and those about to serve.

+Robert Wilbert Granted chzmn231 claim is broad, if you're questioning water being "too cold" in order to make his claim less valid you have to be pretty misinformed. Gulf of Sidra can get cold enough especially in open water to kill someone from hypothermia if they aren't rescued within a relatively short amount of time. You can actually die from hypothermia for being out in open water just about anywhere if you allow your body temp to continue to drop.

I believe it. I went thru aircrew survival training in 84. The Navy dumped us in Pensacola bay and left us there all day. Air and water temp 80's deg. By the time they pulled us out we were all shivering and cold. Consider the Libyan pilots are probably acclimated to very hot desert temps and the shock your body and brain endure during ejection. Not sure what capability the Libyans had to locate and rescue their airmen but assuming the pilots even survived to get into the water they may have taken too long to find them.

A little explanation may help for some of you. Angels is altitude expressed in thousands of feet. Angels 10 is 10,000 feet. Angels five is 5,000 feet. Fox One means that the speaker (pilot) has launched a radar guided or semi-active radar homing missile. If I remember correctly these two F-14s were armed with four AIM-7 Sparrows semi-active radar homing and four AIM-9 Sidewinders heat seeking missiles. Fox 2 was the other F-14 pilot referring to firing an AIM-9 Sidewinder. When one pilot says, "There he is, shoot," he responds with "I can't, I don't have any f(^$*%$ tone," he is referring to an audible signal that the Sidewinder seeker head sends to the pilot. That is the growling noise that you hear a few seconds later. That tells the pilot that the Sidewinder seeker head has picked up the target. This was the second of two air-to-air engagements between Libyan air force fighters and U.S. navy fighters during the and Reagan administration. Moammar Quadaffi had claimed the Gulf of Sidrah as Libyan territory in violation of United Nations agreements. President Quadaffi proclaimed a "Line of Death" between Tripoli and Benghazi across the opening of the Gulf of Sidrah. President Reagan refused to recognize it as Libyan territory and ordered US navy assets to patrol inside the gulf while respecting the US (and international) recognized limit of 12 nautical miles from Libyan shoreline. In 1981 two F-14s flying combat air patrol (I forget the name of the carrier, I think it was the USS Nimitz) reacted on two Su-22 Fitters and downed them both with AIM-9 Sidewinders. It appeared to be an easy shoot because the Fitter is a ground attack fighter, not well suited for air-to-air combat. In this video the F-14s shoot down two MiG-23 Fencers, not much better suited to air-to-air combat. The MiG-23 was an air defense fighter designed to attack heavy bombers such as B-52s. Its capabilities were poor compared to US fighters such as the F-14 and US air force F-15. Quadaffi used to spoil for a fight with the United States, at least he said he did. After surviving a couple of near misses he kind of shut up.

So many people complaining about the lack of quality. These pilots and RIOs were looking mostly at instruments until the very end. If you use a little bit of imagination you can feel how terrifying it is to only get a glimpse of your enemy and if you lose sight of him or Don't get a missile lock you could die. Real life is played out in 360 degrees and you rarely see what kills you. Welcome to combat, folks.

Only one thing I will mention to go along with your thoughts, that is these Men were Chased and ultimately had to defend themselves from CCCP Mig's flown from Libya and chose to pursue two Jet in international waters. The one other thing is these guys have to deal with left and right AND up and down (another 360) and do it at High Speed. Hats off to them, No Innocent people were harmed in this. In 1981 I was onboard the USS Hsrlan County in the Mediterranean off of the coast of Libya when two Navy F-14s from the USS Nimitz were engaged by two SU-22s flying under the Libyan flag (Russian piloted?). The Soviet jets fired two Atoll missiles at our F-14s and missed, the F-14s then maneuvered into position behind the SU-22s firing two Sidewinders and destroyed both Libyan jets. Today it's called the Gulf of Sidra Incident if anyone wants to read about it.

@@thesausage351 it's code for launching missiles, fox one is firing semi-active radar guided missiles where the attacking plane needs to maintain radar lock on the target, fox two is firing infrared guided missiles which lock on to the target's engine heat, so they're fire and forget, you can turn off your sensors and go home. Fox 3 is firing active radar guided missile, which has it's own radar transmitter and receiver, so once you have a lock, it will do the rest, I don't think Tomcats carried any at the time of this engagement. I was on the USS Saratoga CV-60 just a few months after this event, at the beginning of Desert Storm. We were the first Carrier to "LAUNCH" against the forces of Sadam Hussein. We saw this kind of footage daily from our pilots. One thing I've noticed about the comments here, many were glad our guys came back OKAY. When we shot off our first air strike we watched on the flight deck cameras. The one, united sentiment was, I hope our pilots come back OKAY. There was no joy in what we were witnessing, no boasts of what our pilots would do, we just wanted them back safe and OKAY.

Before anyone argues "American Imperialism", I would suggest looking up the first "Gulf of Sidra" incident, simply put: In 1981, then leader/dictator of Libya, Colonel Qadafi, unilaterally announced that entire Gulf of Sidra being Libyan territory, and that anyone not Libyan, who enters the gulf, will be passing a "line of death" and will be destroyed. This was in violation of international law, as a large part of this "line of death" was well past the 12 nautical mile limit, for the internationally agreed upon, on what is a country's territorial waters. Under the direction of the US Government, the US Navy initiated what is called a "Freedom of Navigation" exercise, and parked an entire naval battle group inside the Gulf of Sidra and dared the Libyan to "try something stupid". The Libyans, in response, launched two Su-22 Fitters, with clear hostile intent, at a pair of F-14 Tomcats, the Fitters were shot down. The incident in this video was the US navy continuing to exercise freedom on navigation. Before anyone complains about "American Imperialism", should note that firstly, the US Navy's various Freedom of Navigation exercises are considered a good thing by almost all countries, with only a few countries getting upset, the ones violating international law of seas in the first place. And secondly, and lastly, if anyone thinks I am supporting the US, because they think I am an American, I'm not, I am South African, and I fully support a persons right to navigate international waters without restriction, unless said restriction was internationally agreed upon.

In philosophy, "the Absurd" refers to the conflict between the human tendency to seek inherent value and meaning in life and the human inability to find any. In this context, absurd does not mean "logically impossible", but rather "humanly impossible". The universe and the human mind do not each separately cause the Absurd, but rather, the Absurd arises by the contradictory nature of the two existing simultaneously. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absurdism

Missiles are not as simple as hit or miss. Probability of kill is determined by many factors, from where it's fired and the bogey it's targeting This includes; altitude and speed of launch aircraft (higher and faster is better, higher altitude has less drag on the missile), distance to target (most important), bogey's altitude speed and vector (if he goes lower, faster and perpendicular to the missile it improves his odds which also has the chance to notch the radar signal and make the missile go dumb), did the missile get tricked by chaff or flares, was the missile properly guided or just left to pitbull (fox one semi radar guided), and the orientation to the sun (mostly infrared missiles). It's also general US doctrine to use missiles as a standoff weapon even if it misses. However the Sparrow indeed had a poor reputation for reliability, and even though it was vastly improved in later versions, it's nowhere close to the capability of the AIM-120.

You can briefly hear some of the pilots talking about not having 'a effing tone' (although the guy pronouncing it sounded tone more like toon) at times like around 7:36 . They are referring to how the missiles onboard will not fire in air-2-air mode unless they get a lock on which produces the 'tone', a very specific sound. I believe the sound you hear at 7:39 or 7:41 is the 'tone' they are talking about, but I'm no F-14 Tomcat fighter. The tone is also sometimes called a growl.

The HUD DVR records all audio channels, whether they're selected by the crew or not. The individual crew may not have the channel selected on his audio panel ( in this case ....). The RIO had the channel selected the whole time and was hearing the heater's growl the entire time they were chasing the Flogger. But the skipper driving the jet and pulling the trigger, didn't have it up on his audio panel, so he wasn't hearing it initially. Until his RIO politely reminded him to select it.

A brief history... We might say this began in 1973, when Lybian dictator, Gaddafi, in violation of international law, claimed the entire Gulf of Sidra was his territory. He called the northern latitude of the Gulf "The Line of Death" and threatened to destroy any uninvited ships or planes that dared to cross into the Gulf. In 1973, Nixon was near the end of the Watergate episode and would resign from office less than a year later. Ford did nothing. Jimmy Carter gave Gaddafi, every Islamic nation and every Islamic terrorist group every reason to believe the U.S. was a paper tiger. A lot of today's problems in the Middle East can be traced back to the terrible decisions made by Carter. Emboldened by a weak America, Gaddafi escalated his campaign of terrorism. He had been linked to the hi-jacking of commercial planes, attacks commercial airports, the bombing of commercial establishments, and the funding and control of puppet terrorist groups. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan decided the U.S. had a responsibility to enforce international law. Fighters from the aircraft carrier's air wing would routinely fly inside the "Line of Death" as part of the American Navy's "freedom of navigation" operations designed to prove a commitment to the conventions of international admiralty law. Reagan sent three aircraft carriers to cross the so-called "Line of Death." A Libyan missile installation near Surt launched two Soviet-made SA-5 "Gammon" surface-to-air missiles toward American Tomcats. The missiles missed their targets and fell harmlessly into the sea. Two additional SA-5 missiles were launched but were jammed by an EA-6B Prowler. Two hours later, two MiG-23s took off from Benina air base with orders to intercept and shoot down some of the U.S. fighters. In that air combat, both of the Lybian planes were shot down. The Lybian dictator did not slow his terrorist attacks so in 1986 Reagan ordered an aerial campaign on Lybian soil in retaliation for Libyan agents' bombing of a West Berlin nightclub that killed three people, including a U.S. serviceman, and injured 229 more. In 1989, Lybia ordered another two of their fighter jets to intercept and shot down American Tomcats. This is the fight shown in the video above.

The Tomcat was an awesome platform. I can understand the pilot's anxiety given the time and known history, but I can also see the outcome of an analysis where enemy tracking radar was not engaged. A reminder that Russian made K13 heat seeking missiles do not need radar and the Tomcat is capable of engaging targets at almost 100 nautical miles as well as up close and personal with it's 20mm Vulcan cannon. A very respectful salute to all of our aviation combat pilots, you guys (and gals) are the best of the best.

... the second mig woulda been splashed 10 seconds earlier if the damn AIM-9M woulda gott a good tone... I was an Ordie 10 years ago... during OEF on Deployment, we'd load AIM-9X's and do a "tone check" (make sure the guidance section locks on to a heat signature) and the pilot wouldn't get a tone for 1 of the 2 missiles half the time... (sometimes neither)... we would then do the hand signal to ask the pilot & the WSO if they still wanted to fly even though their Air to Air was shit... not ONCE did a pilot say no... and that happened multiple times a day... I gotta lot of respect for those pilots

What we're seeing here is the TV camera under the nose of the Tomcat. It's not like a movie where there are 12 cameras catching every angle of the fight. The reason there is even this video is that it's the only glimpse of the other aircraft to make the video "interesting". You're right...people think combat for real is filmed like it is on a movie or TV show...

Give it up guys. The Douglas Commercial (DC 3 etc) was designed in 1932. It was great in its day but so out of date today as may be expected. I have flown them. It isn't even a good trainer for a modern airplane. Too many drawbacks to mention. 135 knots IAS? 55% Cruise power. 500 psi hydraulics. Yuk.

You didnt even spell ' the' in douchebag terms right. it would have been ' da ' but your clearly on the ball here so ' ta' it is....( fucking wannba gangster having a spelling stroke). Go at home.... yep nuff said there. and lastly Josef.....(god i hope there isnt a Mrs. Palach in your life poor woman) you killing inesent people....well i never met any inesent people and im sure you haven't either so your getting mad over a race of people that are not real. But hey you're entitled to your opinion, might be as equal to a door knob having an opinion but whatever. Now to the real point at hand. We have rules in this country and so does every other country. Air combat pilots have rules too no matter what side they fly on. There are no pilots I have ever heard of that are stupid or are well.....you. They have to be above the norm to even put fuel in a jet. So that being said they can read a radar screen and map. They know that the US does not fuck around and after what 5 times the pilots gave em a chance to not engage they did? well buddy i tell u what if it were me and I saw INESENT PEOPLE flying jets id just assume it was you and you wouldn't even hear the missle coming....and that is it for me Josef kiss your goats goodnight put away your crayons apologize to your wife for lowering her bar to special needs INESENT person and know nobody is joining your cause we are all just shaking our heads feeling better about ourselves...cheers fucktard

I was on the USS John F. Kennedy in Crash & Salvage the day this happened. It was my birthday and I worked nights at sea (7pm-7am). When I came up from the coop to work that night everyone was laughing and smiling and talking about the Tomcats shooting down the Migs. A few days later after the video was edited to remove info on the video the all of ships company got to see and hear this very video. It's been 30 years since I've heard this. I'm a lil emotional about this cause ...GOD DAMN IT that was my shipmates and my ship that did this and made all of us damn proud to be a American sailor that day. Good shooting good hunting you hot dogs in those Tomcats!!!

@FirstLast-zv5od

@RigoRocks23 I have no idea why people keep trying to twist the story to make it seem like the Libyan pilots weren't doing anything wrong. A typical encounter during that time was that both groups of fighters would disengage, meaning they would alter their course in such a way that they would head in opposite directions. This meant to both forces that they had no hostile intentions. The US F-14s did such maneuver 5 times, altering their course to make it plainly obvious they had no intention of engaging. Each time they did so the Libyans altered their course so as to intercept the F-14s. They were given 5 opportunities to alter their course. Fighters might get as close as a couple hundred km before disengaging. The proximity that the Libyan fighters finally came within before they went weapons hot was very close, visual range close. The weapons used in this scenario were Sidewinder missiles, I am pretty sure they used one of the AIM-9M variants. The Sidewinder is a close range missile used to engage targets from 1-35 km. So, the Libyans were within visual range, armed, given 5 opportunities to disengage and repeatedly showed aggresive intentions by altering their course so as to engage the F-14s. The US fighters were not patrolling over Libyan territory. So clearly the aggressor in this situation is the Libyan pilots. Let me ask you this, some armed dude is walking towards you, you repeatedly change your course so as to avoid the guy but he keeps changing his course so that you will inevitably cross paths. You don't speak the same language and cannot communicate with one another. He clearly wants something to go down. What do you do? These F-14 pilots were well within their rights to defend themselves and if you take hostile actions against the US, we aren't going to cower in fear, tuck tail and run. The US gets a bad rep. Gaddafi decided that Libya owns the Gulf of Sidra, not only did this threaten US shipping interests, but anyone who shipped through it and it just so happens to sit in the Mediterranean Sea. For years before the Reagan administration the US had been a paper tiger in the eyes of Muammar Gaddafi. His actions were going relatively unchecked. So Reagan decided to do something about it.

The missile knows where it is at all times
@joaobarroso9502
@joaobarroso9502 Жыл бұрын
It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is - whichever is greater - it obtains a difference or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position that it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is is now the position that it wasn't, and if follows that the position that it was is now the position that it isn't. In the event that the position that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation. The variation being the difference between where the missile is and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was. The missile guidance computer scenario works as follows: Because a variation has modified some of the information that the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it know where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice versa. And by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.

@GAcolo216
@GAcolo216 4 жыл бұрын
Natheria the Tomcats had been part of a combat air patrol from the carrier USS John F. Kennedy. The Libyans didn’t like that aircraft and the carrier itself crossed their “line of death” which was a claim they took as part of their territorial waters(Cross this and military action will ensue). Even though no other country recognized their claim because it was well past the set standard and it also claimed waters that actually did belong to other countries. The day in question the John Kennedy was 120 miles north of the Libyan shore and had aircraft 80 miles away from their shore. On their way to make port in Israel(another thing the Libyans took offense at). At the time the US had an airborne early warning and control in the sky above the carrier group. It detected the take off of two Libyan Migs that right after take off they turned to a intercept heading directly right at the USS John F Kennedy. That’s when the two F-14’s from the CAP dispatched to intercept them. At the time Libyans pilots where known to break contact once the on board radar signal sweep of an American fighter. So a fight was not expected but was prepared for. Then you can take it from here with the video of what happened. Libyans didn’t break contact.
