That was an excellent video! Just what would have been shown in 1955 at a Farmer's Lunch open house at your local Case dealer. Man, there was nothing better than being allowed to stay home from school for that! It was even better than the Fair!

Great video. I have a 1956 Case 400. Great to see it in action when it was modern. Thanks for the video.

Grew up on a farm in the 1950's in Eastern Washington dry land grain hilly area.I didn't know case made a hillside combine.Most combines that were seen in use were.John Deere ,International or Gleaner and some Massey Harris hillside machines. There were a few Case Level land combines on the level land in the Columbia basin area.

6:33 A tractor with full side covers I wonder how long any of those side covers survived? 7:06 First mention of contour farming and soil conservation. Back in the 50s there were clearly still some die-hards that believed erosion was less costly than straight rows. Back in the 60s in elementary school we were still being taught about the miracle of soil conservation that was contour farming. Contour farming was promoted by the US Soil Conservation Service in the US during the 30s. Wikipedia also had this about the history of contour farming: The Phoenicians first developed the practice of contour farming and spread it throughout the Mediterranean. However, the Romans preferred cultivation in straight furrows and this practice became standard. When did corn planting switch from 3 seed kernels dropped together to the modern strategy of a single seed kernel?

I drove our neighbors Case orchard tractor spraying both his orchards and ours when I was 10 years old. Not sure 10 year olds do that type of thing anymore.

I wonder what the world would be like today had they never used fertilizer.
@dwightl5863
@dwightl5863 2 жыл бұрын
Not using fertilizers would result in having to breakup new ground after a few years of crop production. Growers have always used fertilizers in one form or the other. Some soils are lacking the necessary nutrients and need to be supplemented. Better yields result. I seem to recall from grade school in the 1950's that some cultures would bury a fish beneath the seed in gardens. As the plant grew, the roots would get nutrients from the rotting fish. IMHO

@@dwightl5863 Also, Yankee farmers, upon clearing land in midwest for farming utilized virgin soil to raise Timothy Hay, followed by crop of Flax the next. Within 5 years ground was depleted, Yankee moved unto new ground & repeated process; never learning from his mistake. It took decades to rebuild soil with manure/fertilizer. Hope this helps.
