Thank you for this. My great grandfather served in the USCG during WWII and this truly shows just how much the men in the service put on the line by enlisting. It's sad how the Coast Guard seems to have taken a back seat in terms of respect/prestige; Coast Guard personnel deserve just as much respect as any other veteran!

If you freeze at 18 minutes and 10 seconds 18:10, you will see my father "Thomas Gordon Raby" USGC Tarawa at the top right, pulling in wounded Marines after his Higgins Boat got trashed on the reef. I showed him this film when he was in his 80's and he was stunned for a moment. After a moment of silence he broke down in tears and all he could say was, "All those young boys"..... It was just as he had described it to me when I was in my early 20's but even worse. He was and always will be my own personal hero.

That's quite amazing. Respect to your dad and his comrades. I learned about what happened at Tarawa from Dan Carlin, in Episode 5 of his recent series 'Supernova in the East' www.dancarlin.com/product/hardcore-history-66-supernova-in-the-east-v/ - about 1:57:30 is when he starts on Tarawa

As an Army field grade officer, I had the honor and blessing to swore my son into the USCG this year. I am so extremely proud of him. He joined a fine service with a long honorable and courageous service to our nation from our country’s birth. God bless and protect him and all Man and Women serving in our United States Coast Guard. 👍🏻😉🙏🏻✝️🇺🇸🙏🏻🇺🇸

My grandfather was Coast Guard during WW2. He said he joined because he felt like he should be doing something to help and figured he would probably end up getting drafted eventually and would rather not end up as infantry since he really didn't want to get shot at. Started off as he planned with him stationed stateside until he got in trouble for coming back late from leave. They reassigned him to an LST and he ended up being part of every major amphibious assault of the war in the Pacific. He said they got shot at by Japanese planes when they were at sea and artillery when they were offloading on the beaches. My other grandfather joined the army and ended up working at a supply depot in Great Britain for the entire war so never saw any combat. Funny how stuff works out.

Any statement of naval operations include USCG in some way! Us vets do not forget our CG brothers and sisters. Myself, working in the air force and army, I had many occasions to work with coast guard with logistics, transport, and supply. Missions could not be made successfully without the U S Coast Guard!!!!!!!!! Thanks to you all.

My father served in the USCG in WW2. He served in Trinidad and on Notth Atlantic patrol in a sub chaser. He was a farm boy from northern Minnesota and at some point he was stationed in NYC where he met my mother. There is a monument in Battery Park in Manhattan which are walls with names of the Coast Guard war dead of WW2 on them, I remember as a child being there with my father as he looked at names on the wall (I was just bored of course), I dont know what he was thinking or what names he was looking for but they were clear and fairly recent memories for him, this was in the 1950's.

My dad, Ltjg Frank Fitch was on the LST26..dad did return home..always seemed at a loss. He never ever spoke of his war time..wish I was able to learn some of the things he had to do..dad was a very quiet man..almost never really spoke of much freely. Realize it is too late to ask questions..never wanted to ask dad himself..much too quiet. God Bless

The Coast Guard captured the first German POWs in WWII. There were 2 flags raised on Iwo Jima that day. The first flag, a smaller one, came from a Coast Guard cutter.

My grandfather served in the USCG during WWII, but the entire war he never saw combat. He spent it guarding freighters on the Great Lakes. Always wondered how a dirt farmer from Iowa managed to do that. My other grandfather was a captain and bomber pilot in the Mediterranean Theater and flew over 50 missions. I’m proud of them both, but one of them definitely pulled the lucky straw.
