I'm eally glad that some of Larry Perkins Bathurst cars are being preserved. It 's great to see the legacy of Perkins Sr is being carried on by son Jack, a lack of Bathurst victories notwithstanding. Jack seems to be maintaining the family legacy with class and respect. He's racing every year in an extremey competitive environment. Larry Perkins has been known as one of the sharpest minds in race engineering in Australia in the last 40 or 50 years. I guess that's why HRT snatched up his services and kept him for well over ten years. Then he left HRT. He built his own car for the '95 season. Got taken out on lap 1 of Bathurst 1000. He pitted with a flat tyre, got lapped and started again in last place. Larry and Russell Ingall drove the pants of the car and won the race. It's the stuff of legends, and is why Larry Perkins is a superhero of Australin motorsport.

Growing up others loved Brocky or DJ or Moffat or KB but Larry Perkins was always my favourite. Old school, down to earth boy from the bush with a brilliant mechanical mind who was _fast_. People forget he won the European Formula 3 championship in the mid 70's, had 3 years in Formula 1, ran 4th at Le Mans 24hr, won the Australian Rallycross championship, Elfins, Formula Ford, drove a solar powered car (that he helped design and build) across Australia...he did it all. But for me his greatest race was 1993 Bathurst when Lowndes hit him going into turn one on the first lap snapping off the tyre valve and forcing him to limp pretty much a full lap and pit, putting him deadset last and a lap down. Winning that race was extra special because the Perkins cars were the only Holdens that day running Aussie 5L engines (built by Larry), everyone else had gone with Chevys.

Agree with everything you said. LP is a legend. The race where CL moved over and touched LP was Bathurst 1995, that was the last to first race. '93 was the last Holden engine win.

I have a lot of respect for Larry Perkins, even i am a Ford fan, too me 1993 and 1995 two the best races for LP, in 93 LP used the Holden V8 304 all the others used the Chev V8, they said he would not qualify the car on pole and if he did they said LP would not win the race well LP did both qualify on pole and win the race, 95 an incident with a young Craig Lowndes caused LP a flat tire RF? LP came last to first and won the race. ( 94 was Dick Johnson John Bowe won. )
Great insight into the car. What engines were they running back then? were they an LS?

The short deck small block Chev. Ford deckheight and rod length. The everyone is the same mentality so you had a Chev imitating a Ford [Clevo style heads] with a double wishbone Falcon front suspension.
