When raising a tall and heavy wall, we do two things: 1) Screw vertical "fence posts" to the rim joist, to prevent the bottom of the wall from sliding off the floor. On a top-heavy wall, the posts are tall enough to ensure the bottom plate doesn't jump over them. With posts, you can reduce toe-nails, which will reduce effort in tilting up. 2) Use a rope looped over the top plate to prevent the wall from falling outward. Use 3-4-5 to calculate the diagonal length, add a foot or so, and secure the free ends to the sub floor. A 12ft tall wall, with rope anchored 16ft from the base, would mean diagonal of 20ft, so rope length of 21 + 21 + extra to secure to floor. It's a loop so you don't need to climb a ladder to free it.

I came here to offer the same thing, up here in Canada we always put a kicker on the rim joist regardless of size, I will be steeling your rope idea for tall rake walls. 👊🏼
@jamespppyacek342 Жыл бұрын
@@willbell9642 In '79 I was on a framing crew in Colorado. We used the kickers, or fence posts, or cleats, as I call them. to keep walls off the ground. We used duplex nails as there were no battery tools yet, and just knocked them off the rim once the wall was secured. Also we nailed the diagonal support 2x4s to the top of the wall before lifting so they were ready to cleat to the sub floor without climbing a ladder. Perkins' could use some pro-tips too.

Short pieces of 2x4 fastened into the rim joist on the deck and extending above the deck a foot or so is also a good method for keeping walls from sliding off the deck when standing them up. And there are no nails to remove from the bottom plate after the wall is in place. As for the Bobcat, rent a skidsteer with tracks for the french drains and back filling before buying a small excavator. Same goes for the excavating, the skidsteer on tracks used in conjunction with the excavator will speed up the process. And would be usefull for rough grading, spreading gravel etc etc.

I purchased a nice used skid steer. I will never go back. It has So many applications. Besides the obvious dirt moving abilities. I use the fork lift attachment more then anything else. removing concrete slabs, lifting stuff right off trailer, eg. ply wood drywall etc.. Lifting bucket all the way up to catch shingles when roofing. Putting plywood using forks up to the roof. carrying cubes of block next to where your working. can go on. Its on all our jobs now. A crane attachment to lift trusses. R&R buildings uses his a lot. But, like me. You guys do many trades. I think it would greatly help you guys. I would advise getting the forks with the next rental and try it out. My guys and I love the healthier backs we have. lol

It is interesting watching how houses in America are built. It fascinates me that a country with such wildly fluctuating weather has such flimsily built structures. Don't get me wrong, Im not criticising your work, as you are clearly extremely detail oriented with your craft, & I really do feel that tradespeople are artists & very often undervalued, but the way those outside structural walls are built are what my house in England has as simple room partitions. The outside walls of my house are built using stone & brick, double layered with insulation in the middle & are about 12 inches wide... Its fascinating to see the differences.

For the raked wall stud spacing: why not use a construction master pro to determine stud spacing? Enter the length of the wall, hit run. Subtract the height of the tall wall from the short wall, hit rise. That should automatically update the pitch, which you don't even need to know. Now all you need to do is enter the known stud spacing and hit run, then hit diagonal and it will tell you the measurement for the same stud spacing on the diagonal point. There's all sorts of other ways to get useful measurements, but that has to be way more accurate than sighting down a chaulk line. And knowing the pitch should help get more accurately stud lengths. If you know the measurement to the short point or long point, you just have to cut it at that pitch whichever way it needs to be angled. You guys have a lot of "we'll just make it work" cuts in that wall that this would easily avoid.

When I do rake walls this way I do my first stud spacing, find the diagonal spacing number like you guys did and then just fire it off on a calculator doing 16.3125 + 16.3125 = 32-5/8 = 48-15/16 = so on and so on. This lets me quickly layout to the nearest 1/8th and I guarantee I have no compounding error by the time I get to the other end.
